About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineering Director to lead engineering strategy, software delivery, technical standards, and team performance across the organisation.

You will oversee software development programmes, guide engineering managers and technical teams, improve delivery processes, and ensure that technology solutions are secure, scalable, maintainable, and aligned with business requirements.

This position is suited to an accomplished technology professional with extensive experience in software engineering, technical leadership, digital products, cloud platforms, or enterprise software development.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement the company’s software engineering strategy
Lead engineering managers, software engineers, architects, and technical specialists
Oversee the delivery of software products, platforms, integrations, and internal systems
Establish coding, architecture, testing, security, and documentation standards
Ensure software projects are delivered according to agreed scope, quality, budget, and timelines
Work with product, commercial, operations, and client teams to define technology priorities
Review system architecture and guide major technical decisions
Improve development workflows, release processes, and engineering productivity
Promote automated testing, continuous integration, and reliable deployment practices
Monitor platform performance, availability, security, and technical risk
Oversee cloud infrastructure, application modernisation, and systems integration initiatives
Manage engineering budgets, workforce plans, suppliers, and technology resources
Establish engineering KPIs and prepare performance reports for company leadership
Recruit, coach, and develop engineering managers and technical professionals
Support technical due diligence, client proposals, and solution planning
Maintain business continuity, disaster recovery, and incident-response procedures
Ensure engineering activities follow data protection, cybersecurity, and company requirements
Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend suitable business applications

What We Are Looking For

Experience

Eight or more years of experience in software engineering, application development, cloud technology, or a related technical field
Substantial experience leading software engineering teams and managers
Proven responsibility for complex software products or technology platforms
Experience overseeing architecture, development, testing, deployment, and operational support
Experience managing engineering budgets, delivery plans, and technical roadmaps
Background in software consulting, SaaS, digital services, financial technology, or enterprise platforms is beneficial

Skills

Strong software engineering and technical leadership capabilities
Excellent understanding of modern software architecture and development practices
Knowledge of cloud platforms, APIs, databases, security, and scalable systems
Strong programme planning and delivery-management abilities
Confident people leadership, coaching, and performance-management skills
Ability to translate business requirements into practical technology plans
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Excellent stakeholder, client, and executive communication skills
Commercial awareness and experience managing technology budgets
Familiarity with Agile development, DevOps, automated testing, and continuous delivery
Professional approach to confidential company and customer information

Education

Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related subject preferred
Relevant technology, cloud, security, or management qualifications are advantageous
Substantial software engineering and leadership experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications

Pay: £105,000.00-£138,000.00 per year
