Working as a broadband, landline and tv support agent a typical day of work is taking calls for 9-10 hours, with about an hours break during this time. Most customers are quite unhappy, some are downright abusive, however you do have the occasional call where a customer is genuinely nice to speak to and you’re able to resolve the issue. Customer service can be a very stressful environment, especially when the customers are generally calling to complain about a fault.

 A lot of issues are simple fixes or booking engineers who are able to fix it in a few days, however some can be quite complex and long to resolve which can be very stressful especially when first starting to take calls. This becomes more stressful when the customer is understandably furious about being without broadband or a landline for an extended period of time. 

Management offer very little support or guidance even when a customer is demanding to speak to them. Often passing the book back to you, managers do not want to deal with escalated callbacks, and will rearrange these calls for a later date, you as an advisor will then have to explain to the customer why they’re available to speak to staff but not the customer themselves. Management often ordering food and monitoring call stats rather than doing actual work. 

During training, the trainers will lead you to believe this is a job where you can easily progress to different departments or off the phones, I spoke with many colleagues who had been promised the same thing over 3 years ago and were turned away from any sort of promotion. Definitely an if your face fits environment, favouritism and cliques will be rewarded, work ethic and skill not so much. 

You will often encounter very high stress situations, customers needing a working landline due to health issues and needing to open a welfare case and hoping the welfare case is accepted. Other times customers will need their broadband to work from home and the pressure of this can be overwhelming at times as customers aren’t happy to wait for an engineer or to help themselves. 

One of the hardest parts of the job is the micromanagement, monitoring and lack of privacy. Spend 3 minutes in after call work and expect a message off your manager asking why you’re not taking a call, spend too long in personal break on the toilet and expect a message off your manager asking why you’re not taking calls or asking you to stay after work to make up for a few minutes out of conformance. Managers will watch your screens back if they suspect you’re spending to long in after call work. Departments are monitoring your call times, after call work, hold times etc. Privacy is completely gone here and it’s frankly humiliating having to explain to your manager why you’ve been taking a personal break when often times it’s to use the toilet or just to take a minute after a difficult call.  

 Managers will pick random calls to listen back to, picking apart everything from your apologies, responses, opening of complaints. Often criticising that your apology was not sincere enough, not showing enough empathy etc. Criticising why you took long to respond to a customers query, why you didn’t start up more conversation with the customer, oftentimes this is due to a poor system that is slow to load up the correct solution and difficult to navigate. The computers themselves take at least 10 minutes to log in, meaning you have to arrive 15 minutes early to work and if the computer is especially slow (which they often are) you’ll be expected to make this time back during your breaks or after work.  

Good performance is rarely praised whereas managers are quick to ridicule you for any areas you’re lacking in, oftentimes the stats are hard to meet as an advisor, relying on customers attitude and bt themselves. Stats such as FCR (first call response), where you have to arrange a callback, yet the customer has still phoned back several times between this due to other issues arising or complex issues such as outages. Another stat, NPS which is how the customer rates bt as a whole, not you as an advisor, in the surveys after calls. Very hard to change a customers opinion as an advisor when their broadband is down and they’re not happy with bill increases etc. Management will recommend opening complaints or telling them the benefits of bt will improve your survey results. Completely out of touch with reality. Luckily most of the surveys I received back from customers during my time here were responded to quite highly, however other colleagues who received angrier customers missed out on bonuses purely down to bad luck. 

You will learn a lot working here, especially if it’s your first job or you’re fresh out of university (they target these people during interviews) or if you’re not particularly tech savvy. However this learning isn’t through training, it’s through months of calls where you encounter complex problems and you’re thrown in the deep end, trial and erroring until you find a solution. 

Overall benefits, stable full time work, guaranteed hours, holiday is easy to arrange minus weekends and summer. Team members are very helpful; more so than management could ever be. 

Overall cons, stressful environment, micro management, cliques in higher positions, slow and broken systems, training is poor, lack of support from managers, long hours. 

I would not recommend this job for anyone without thick skin, a lot of patience and any morals. 

The beginning: 
So to start, most likely you will begin as an agency worker.  This is the hardest part as you are watched like a hawk and if you do bad constantly or don't hit stats you're instantly put on a plan. 
Training:
Lasts for around 4 weeks for COT/Retentions where you get little to no training on the actual system and all about asking the right questions to pitch to the needs of the customer, it's at this point you will realise you've come into a sales based role as opposed to the so called retentions or service as advertised.
Grad bay:
This is around 8 weeks roughly and in this period you will usually have 1 -  2 floorwalkers and your manager helping you every step of the way. This will be where you put to use your knowledge and build on system knowledge overall.  You get a lot of offline time and constant support with training to get you in the right position and where you will be polished up into a proper advisor. This is also where you will begin to love or hate your team depending on how they are (for the record I absolutely love working with mine and feel very motivated with them around)  it's about teamwork and smashing your stats, making yourself, your manager and trainer look good. 
Post grad: 
Congratulations! If you made it this far you managed to put up with (and excuse my french) all the sh*tty customers you will get on a varied basis. Some days will be good, some days will be bad. You will have to accept that and some days you just won't want to come in. There is little to no swing time (wait time before each call)  and no offline time to follow up on difficult calls if you have to fill out service requests etc.  Wrap targets are 30s and you get constantly watched on this with regular updates from your manager if you're coming close or going over. Call handling time (CHT) target is around 750. Although in grad bay this usually Is alot more lenient. You're looking on average under 10 minutes a call to ask questions, pitch products to the needs and close the sale, ALL whilst being compliant with regulations.  Over time you will master this and it's easy to follow. You'll receive weekly stat updates and daily ones and the managers are amazing, they will definitely help you progress, focusing on your weak areas and even looking at what sales you need  to be on target. My manager specifically has put his neck on the line for me many times and has shouted me out in many many meetings getting me recognised. Thankfully my days of agency over having just relieved a BT contract. 

Once you get a contract you'll love the job alot more because you know how much you look forward to that paycheck as it shoots up for doing EXACTLY the same job and NEVER having to deal with manpower ever again!!!! 

Despite how my review may seem negative the job really isn't that bad. YES you deal with bad customers and complaints at times but you will at any job. This job requires commitment, patience and drive to want to succeed and you will.  You are the last port of call and you will make some customers so happy it's unreal and you feel good about it too. At the same time you'll be stuck at times with messy technical faults you can't deal with  and unfortunately nothing you're able to do will help. 
After training and coaching you will just realise, every day is a new day and every week is a fresh slate. Forger the past focus on the future because it's a really fun environment to be in if you like sales and customer service.  I won't sugar coat it and say it's epic and the best place to ever work at in the world, it isn't, but no place truly is without its gripes.  I love working at BT and telling people about it, I feel proud to represent the company and there are sooo many perk of working at BT. You are a truly recognised individual if you want to succeed.  Its a stepping stone into the future and the management are truly amazing. 
Overall it's a great company to work for, free broadband when you get a contract, discounts on many retail stores or online, discounted cinema codes etc and many many incentives to win alot of prizes. The shift aren't consistent nor amazing and its hard to get time off making balancing work and home life hard but for that pay.. You can not complain. 

That is the most honest and true review you will get and it wouldn't make a  difference if they let me off tomorrow or I ended up resigning sometime in the future because I stand by everything I've said.

Working for BT  customer retention was one of the worst decisions of my life, the whole place is corrupt and they tell you nothing but lies to get you through the door. You'll slowly see that that everything you've been told about bonus your pay increase and shift patterns is false, they then proceed to cover that up with more lies and false promises. The suits that run the place constantly find ways to design the job against you, while increasing their own revenue.

The job itself is horrible dealing with angry customers who will go out of their way to bring you down, knowing that you cant say anything back. The aim of the job is to sell as many mobiles and TVs as physically possible to one customer, managers will not care if they have a mobile or another tv service in contract. If you do not sell those services they will see you as a failure and make you feel like it. You are constantly monitored by managers your calls are constantly listened to so that they can be used against you. They call it support and coaching but it's not its basically a lst of reasons why your bad at the job and then the threats start. You'll be put on a plan or your going to a disciplinary and their favourite you could lose your job. They like to make these threats at least once or twice a week. The managers job is push you to make hard sells they will even push you to break the laws  you are trained on. If you cant sell a phone then you should miss sell the phone, managers will pretend they wont want you to do it but mobile sales get them their bonus so they will force it upon you. 

The bonus scheme causes the corruption in this place advisors will miss sell products or straight up add mobile sim cards to their account without telling the customer. This them causes ripple effects that will hit you, because when the customer inevitably calls in to cancel the products they didn't even order your bonus will take a huge hit. Meaning that the bonus you earn or rely earn isn't even in your control, this goes for your stats as well. The main stat that effects your bonus is your keep score which is how many customers stay with BT that you have spoken to. But if any customer rings up to cancel their service because of a miss sell that you had nothing to do with your keep score takes a huge hit. Now this is pretty much all of your calls throughout the day, if 80% of your calls are cancels you'll be lucky to get 10 pound bonus at the end of the week. Again your manager will be on your back about things like this that you cant control as you can only save so many customers. 

Shifts are a joke you have no say over what days you will do even though they promise you shift preferences on entry, yes you get days of and holidays but you'll be lucky if any day you need of will be accepted. You could have 20 days to book off but might only get one accepted, also expect your day off to be taken back at any point because they have predicted more calls than normal. Do not even think about needing a day off for personal reasons a funeral, sick family member or even your kids need you urgently. Because your manager will basically tell he doesn't care and that you cant leave, I've seen full grown men cry in the kitchen because BT wouldn't let him see his sick son. At my place there was even a suicide over the way BT treats its employees. They quickly tried to cover it up though they like to make you think they care about you when your just a slave in a chair dealing with their angry customers. 

Management is by far the worst aspect of this job they roam around in a little pack constantly trying to find things to use against you. They are all the same bonus focused back, stabbing and liars they will say anything to keep you quiet. While using every chance they get to put you down and depress you. 

If you take anything from from this just ask yourself would you be happy working 9 hour days in a prison with no windows being shouted out from customers and managers, constant threats about your job security and no social life because that's what working for BT means.

That's why I left best decision I've ever made

I would arrive at work minimum 15 minutes early in order for me to be calm prior to going online. For example I would get myself a coffee and cold drink, find a seat, ensure I had all of my notes in front of me. This was my preparation. I would then log on. 
The calls would start flowing in with barely a 2 second gap between each call. Calls ranged from emergency service calls, directory enquiry calls, internal directory calls from BT staff and chairmans office calls. As my next call could be any of this type I had to give my full attention to the screen and listen to the recording/ alert type on my headset in order for me to say the correct speech or greeting.
Every day was different and was also a learning curve. Each customer was different, with different attitudes. Some customers for example on directory enquiries were very polite and patient. Others were the very opposite. I learned a lot about geography which was self taught. Also if a customer came through to Chairmans Office with a query I had never dealt with before, I would also learn how to deal with it efficiently and take notes for future reference.
My BT manager was fantastic at her job. She really took the time to get to know her team on both a professional and personal level, and constantly praised her team members that were doing well, thus meaning, we all worked to the best of our ability and continuously pushed and strived to do better.
My colleagues were also great. There was no divide if we were part of a different team, we all helped each other out as much as possible whenever we could. There was a lot of multi tasking in this job, it really was an essential part in doing the job well. We could not speak to each other in the switch room unless it was in regards to the calls.
In regards to the hardest part of the job, there were many I therefore cannot pinpoint just 1 aspect.
The main point was the pressure. It was constant and often immense. For example, if a customer had called for an ambulance perhaps for a hurt child and the ambulance service were not answering, this would result in a delay. I then had to try other numbers for the geographical area of the customer, whilst reassuring them that their call would be answered as soon as possible but never diverting from my given speech. I would then have to fill in forms and inform my supervisor. That is just one example of many I could list. Another aspect was the fact that I could be listened into either from my manager, the centre manager, or the main centre for my monthly quality check. If I diverted from the script in any way, even if it was just saying something in the wrong order, I would fail, and for me that was just not an option.
When I am working I give it my all and I will strive to be either the best or one of the best and I was often top of my team. My work ethic is to give everything you have and more. I believe we can all improve our abilities so as we are the best or we are constantly going the extra mile for the customer or one of our colleagues.
For me the most enjoyable part of the job was the fact that I was the first point of contact in helping to save lives and it really gave me job satisfaction. Also being top of my team reflected how hard I worked on meeting my targets. I enjoyed working with my colleagues. Everybody was helpful to each other because at the end of the day, we all did the same job and we all knew just how important it was to get things right first time. I had only been working for BT for 5 months and I was selected to be a help operator. Some of my colleagues had worked there for much longer and were not selected. A help operator is when you sit with a new recruit and listen in to them taking calls. You also help them by showing them the script, telling them when to say something and what to say and various other jobs such as online forms, tone of voice and call handling times.
I also did a lot of overtime, sometimes working 16 hours a day where possible. I worked Christmas day, Christmas eve and New Years Day.

The hardest part about the last job I had in BT was seeing by how much the management culture had been eroded over the years, from being relaxed but firm and (and relatively) focussed paternal culture to a slash and burn one with no regards to the potential fall-out. I also saw an increase in people being promoted or brought into management but who had no actual idea of how to lead people . Slashing training budgets over a couple of decades and having a heavy reliance on LinkedIn learning (which can be good) but with no 'safe space' to practice leadership  plus weak management was key, in my view, in supporting and propagating weak to very bad management practices.

In my last job, days (for me) were long and busy with no real recognition as to the effort I put in even when it was clear that I was working late into the evening / night. I eventually stopped that and decided that I do what I could within the, more or less, core hours. The team culture was non-existent as not many people trusted what they were being told by their manager and favouritism was rife.
 
In case people think that I'm bitter and twisted, an interesting fact one of my peers told me before I left was that, out of a graduate intake of about 25 or so people 3 years prior, around 3 were still working for BT. The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers is a good benchmark and in 10 years since I last looked at it, BT has slipped from mid forties to 67 in the 2023/2024 publication. Kind of says it all.

It wasn't always like this and, talking to colleagues before I left, there seems to be a consensus that the company's leadership culture had slowly eroded over the previous 20 years or so. The conclusion was that the company suffered today from being organised like a tree of monkeys and that everyone at the top, looking down, sees only smiles whereas those looking up......". You get the picture😊

What was good about it was that I made some great friendships there and, despite what I said above, I did have fun there (most days 😂). I learnt over the years that I had to make the best of any situation I was in as worrying about what can't be controlled was not a good path to go down and so made sure that I took every days as it came and tried to make the best of it which, to a large extent, I did.

Most people I came across over the years went out of their way to try and help despite their workloads and/or management chain and, despite the lack of processes, conflicting deadlines, lack of time etc., the majority of people would try and support where they could. I learnt a lot of technical 'stuff' and worked and learnt from some really good managers (and even the not so good ones!). I dealt with people all over the world and learnt a lot about different cultures and how to deal with them and I travelled a bit.

In summary, any company is only as good as the people that lead it and, in my opinion, BT has concentrated on it's slash and burn policy without taking it's people along with them. However, I found it a good place to learn in and, so long as people realise that once they join they are just a number, I believe that they will be able to learn a lot before moving onto the next challenge in or outside of BT.

What is the best part of working at the company?
For me personally the best part of working for BT was the customers.
 Despite being warned on many occasions including the interview about abusive angry customers i never had one.  Not one.  And that's possibly because i  always sided with them as they were the poor things paying for this indifferent service and largely being taken for granted by this dinosaur of a company. Once i had the head set on and a customer on the line with an issue to be solved the time just flew by. It was like the rest of the world didn't exist. There was only myself the customer and an issue that required a solution. Also the mental workout has proved beneficial.   Having spent up to ten hours a day for 12 months simultaneously holding a polite conversation while solving often remarkably complex technical issues in a noisy enviroment is bound to have some mental consequences. In my case my medium and short term memory has noticeably improved. 
And there were a few nice people employed at my location. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Maybe 10% of the stress as i experienced it was from the customers or the issue to be solved. The other 90% was entirely from the working environment. I will describe it for you. Firstly i would be in with often a dozen others all trying to hear customers via very poor quality headsets. And using ancient computers, software and monitors.  The constant noise level has to be heard to be believed. I experienced staff members who's job was to assist us not appear to do any work at all, just chatting, singing, laughing loudly, reading books or out the back vaping every ten minutes. 
So while your concentrating on a task the background sound is comparable to a lunatic asylum. 
    

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment isn't at all pleasant. See previous answers. 

Firstly people are taken on in teams usually something over a dozen at a time. And this happens approximately every two months. And there is a reason for this rate of onboarding as the rate of staff loss is incredible. From my team we averaged one leaving per month. I left after a year and during the same month as two others from my original team. This left just two survivors And the objective of these people seems to be to outlast by any means the other members of their team. As this could lead to maybe being a team leader. And that would mean apart from holding the occasional pointless meeting once a week doing almost no work at all.. Ours used to sit just listening to our calls for hours between vaping breaks.   We even had one team member who spent her time spying for our team leader via teams and text messages.  

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
A typical day is a good way to put it as most days are nearly identical. I think iv decribed the experience in previous answers.

In October 2000 I was promoted to C2 computing grade at BT working in the company's own internal Service Desk which was responsible for dealing with employees computing problems,fixing them or passing to the skill center to further investigate. This was mainly answering the telephone and remote access to their machines for standard fixes.
In June 2005 I accepted a shift position dealing with business customers doing the same type of work with fixes to their different systems.
This would be constant calls all day dealing with there problems.
My manager at the time had worked on the Service Desk for years and had a lot of experience. Any major incidents would involve call outs for engineers and senior management. There was about 100 people initially which gradually reduced and on the night shift there was only 3 people. I was held as the stand in supervisor as it was a customer requirement that it was to be a BT person. We all had a great working environment and got on well. The hardest part was to try and fix someones problem when we had problems connecting remotely and the customer wasn't very computer literate. I enjoyed speaking to the customers and made many friends along the way.
October 2010 Document Management.
A typical day in my previous job would be to sign on to 2 computers and work from the mailboxes. My work consisted of ensuring that the working practice documents held by BT on the DWP contract were ISO20000 compliant. The documents were referenced and reviewed for annual checks.Spread sheets were held for easy reference to review dates. I learned that the document owners were also the people who carried out the changes to the DWP network and where my role fitted in to the process. I was also involved in validating the change requests that came in and ensured that they were passed to the appropriate teams for notification and implementation.
The Manager of this group is exceptionally good at her job and makes sure that everyone abides by the rules and completes there work at the highest level.
I got on well with my co-workers and worked as part of a team. If there was a heavy work load that had to be completed that day then we all joined in to help.
The hardest part of the job was encouraging the document owners to review the documents and return them on time.
I was redeployed in to this role after my previous job as a call center analyst shift call center adviser ended. The job was in a mess as no one had dealt with the emails for a while. It took a lot of hard work to bring the documents back up to date and to pass the Audit requirements. Before I left the non-restricted documents were moved on to a new system to speed up and simplify the process. This process saved 2 days work a week.

I worked at BT only for a short amount of time , i completed training and began taking calls in the call center. Our job title was 'Loyalty advisors'.
The job would involve mostly inbound calls to BT, most of the time people wanting to leave BT for a different supplier , moving , cost was too high. The only benefit i'd say to working at BT was the employee benefits, you'd get Free Broadband and TV and discounts on mobile but the impact it can have on your mental health truly doesn't balance out.

I say this for the following reasons;

- From day one of taking calls your 'team' become your competition, who can sell more? Who has the highest value held for BT? Who has a better rating from their customers? 

- You're taking calls from your start time to the end of the day, fair enough you get a 15 minute break in the morning , 30 minutes for lunch and 15 minutes in the afternoon, this all seem well and good when they tell you this in training but as soon as you're in the call center , this goes out the window. For Example; You'd take a call starting at 10:15, your break is at 10:45 , on average some calls could be 30 minutes long, if not WAY longer, if your call runs into that 10:45 break , tough luck , you have to wait until lunch, The same happens at lunch , you've now missed 45 minutes of your 1 hour of total breaks throughout the day, I had this happen and wasn't even allowed to leave the call center to get some air.

- You have a daily schedule fixed by your manager of when you should be online / offline ( for breaks and team huddles ), You get monitored on your offline time when you should be online, You have a '25 minute' allowance per day ( toilet breaks & water ), to be monitored daily on the time you spend using the bathroom or getting a drink to be pulled a side and told you're failing this allowance is truly ridiculous! 

- You have a set target daily / weekly of what you should be selling and how much value you should be retaining for the company, these expectations were set high even after coming out of training, causing stress on employees thinking they aren't good enough.

- Your best is never good enough, there will always be someone doing better than you, you may have been able to sell a broadband package , but why didn't you sell that mobile deal to the customer who was complaining about spending too much monthly as it was? It seems like managers want to see you suffer trying to sell things just to add that bonus to their wage packet every month.

To top this off, I left BT within two months of starting due to the stress it was putting me under with the pressure of under achieving and the Horrible shift patterns, I received a letter two months after leaving BT asking me to send them payments as they had over paid me in my final pay cheque, obviously an error with their management to payroll communications.

I'd STRONGLY Advise avoiding work at BT like the plague.

Having never worked in a sales role or a call centre roll previous to working for BT, I was very unsure of what to expect and have to say my expectations were completely wrong. There is a very friendly and lively atmosphere in the centre with a pleasant working environment and really good facilities, such as break out rooms with table tennis, comfy sofas and TV's as well as tea and coffee provided for staff. There is so much support for staff in terms of training, work development, coaching and guidance and even at a personal level. The employee benefits are huge, from discounted products to weekly incentives - even including opportunities to win holidays or event tickets (obviously if you put in the hard work!). The bonuses and rewards are fantastic, the bonuses are uncapped so there is a real potential for extra earning. From my experience the management (and particularly our team manager) are exceptionally caring and really push team members to succeed, even the higher management are very down to earth and approachable. I have found my manager to be very caring and I know I could approach him with any issue, be it work related or personal. I have honestly never worked for a company that makes you feel so valued as an employee. There is a lot of room for development and staff are actively encouraged to seek out opportunities to progress.

Of course there are a couple of downsides however, this is shift work so the hours are very sporadic with the centre being open from 8am to 9pm and shifts being patterned between these times. You must work 6 out of 10 Saturdays and 4 Sundays so there is a lot of weekend work involved (it is extra pay on Sundays). You don't often get more than 1 day off in a row. There are a lot of targets and everything is tracked and monitored, however there is a lot of support with this and it does not feel daunting or cause any stress. Booking annual leave is very difficult especially during busy periods and you need to book well in advance to guarantee you get the time off approved (we have been told this will be improving in the near future). Dealing with customer's can be a little difficult sometimes and there are a lot of complaints, however this is the nature of the job and if you do not have the correct personality to deal with difficult situations and conversations then this is not the right job for you :)

In summary BT (Accrington) is honestly a great place to work and is the first job I have had that I could go so far as to say I enjoy, there are a lot of rewards for hard work and a lot of support and development opportunities, however be prepared for unsociable working hours.

First, just as a start, the wages here were amazing for a "no skill" job. I worked as a Tier 1 Technical Agent, and my wage was £1,600 per month. You had to do a lot for that wage, though. Sales would constantly be selling products to old and vulerable customers, and then after the customer paid would stop contacting them. Because we were the technical team, the majority of those customers ended up coming through to us, as we could alter and fix the product they'd bought, but the majority of the time they would be coming through demanding to speak to their sales rep, who 9 times out of 10 you could never get ahold of, so the customer would take our their anger on you. Sales were usually based in London too, so it wasn't a case of you could just go and find them in the building. 

The management is awful, and usually managers are floating around the building rather than managing their team. There were a few "Team Leaders" who also just refused to take calls off you, so I genuinely didn't know what the point of the being there was. If a manager suddenly quits, you're usually assigned somebody who has just been there a long time, not somebody who actually has any experience in managing a team.

Progression, like most call centres, goes to people who managers like. If you're not a favourite, you'll never progress, and you'll be stuck on calls for the foreseeable future. 

Is your mental health poor? Do you have problems going on in your personal life? Is your relationship with your partner slowly breaking down because all you seem to do is complain about work? Tough luck. Managers and colleagues don't want to hear it. As policy, if you complain about your mental health, they'll send you for some counselling, but the person I was sent to was awful, and didn't even make notes throughout our sessions. If you stop going because the counsellor you've been given is awful, you'll usually be given some kind of warning and you'll be told that you're not trying hard enough.

You're also expected to learn the majority of the system, managers will milk you for your wage. Whilst I was here I started off learning the Cloud Voice system, but was told early on I'd be expected to learn the Cloud Phone system, too (something everyone in BT seems to hate).
