Hm-Land-Registry

Unfortunately I am facing potential redundancy after nearly 30 years with Land Registry. I have been fortunate enough to have worked within most areas of the business including Legal/Plans Department, Customer Service and, for the past 7 years, as part of Commercial Services/Marketing & Sales. I took the opportunity offered to complete NVQs in Customer Service and Mentoring, plus an ITQ. The various work patterns offer the flexibility to balance work and childcare. I have met and made some wonderful friends through the years, friends and work colleagues who support each other to get the job done and who also care for each other at a personal level. Outside of the day to day business Land Registry encourage various Sports activities e.g. Golf, Football, Hockey etc.. plus Entertainment, reduced price theatre trips and tickets to various local attractions for the whole family.  There is also an on site gym, run by the Health & Well Being Group Volunteers.  I was also successful in my application for the role of Office Harassment Adviser, offering a 'Listening Ear' and support to resolve conflict and signposting to mediation where necessary.  I am also a Trustee and Secretary of  the Office Charity Committee, raising money through various events for both local and national charities. All in all I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to spend the vast majority of my working life with Land Registry

The majority of the staff and management are lovely and supportive. The best managers I've ever had have all been in the Land Registry.
Flexi time is offered so you can come and go as you please as long as you manage your time well.
Great holidays and very social hours. No weekend wolf unless you want to do overtime. Many activities offered to staff throughout the year. The Christmas party is one to remember (although few people do).
 

The pay is saraly based, and by comparison to many other companies, pretty reasonable.
The job offers frequent rotation, so you're unlikely to stay in one place for too long, you learn new things very often. 

The expectations of you are very reasonable and goals are usually achievable. 

The only negative is the Contact Centre. Staff must spend at least six months on the phones, away from casework. I was not informed of this when I started. Managers in the call centre and not always visible, frequently away from their desks in meetings (which makes it very difficult to refer calls). Some managers in this area micro-manage, it's the only place in the office where I was not happy. 

Progression can also be hard to achieve and is not that frequent. Many staff members have been unsuccessful in their promotion attempts for years, despite having the necessary knowledge. Promotions are subject to tests and an interview, so if you're not great at one to one interviews, you're unlikely to be promoted.

The work never bothered me; I liked to work hard and feel that on my return home, I really had done a good day's work. I had some really good times, predominantly on the IT Helpdesk and also with the legal aspect of the Conveyancing/Legal duties themselves. I absolutely thrived on being the PA to a senior manager and although this was quite demanding and he admitted himself on many occasions, that I was performing above and beyond the duties of my grade, I was instrumental in the registration of some very large private estates in England and this included meetings with some very high profile landowners. However, the Land Registry was totally ineffective when it came to bullying and other personal issues that significantly affected people's lives. As long as 'most of the work was being done mostly ok most of the time' that seemed to be sufficient. I put myself out to take on additional duties to my conveyancing role to stretch myself and make the day more varied and interesting, But there is no denying that although I look back on that time as having given me some of the best times of my working life, the Land Registry made me accept some of the worst moments of my entire working life and if I never see some of those individuals again, it will be a milllion years too soon.

Only work here if you're a corporate yes person. A lot of bullying goes on in plain site. Managers don't like having to manage staff with disabilities and are often quite bigoted. The ones who get promoted are the ones who go to the pub with managers every Friday. Others get no look in with this. Older male managers promote younger female staff beyond their capabilities over experienced staff and buy them gifts like bottles of prosecco. The same older men who drool over the young women make disparaging comments about LGBT members of staff whilst pretending they champion diversity, aided and abetted by very senior Civil Servants. An example of this being called a "diva" when challenging homophobic language which compounds the homophobia. If you speak out you're threatened and told that you'll never work within public services again as they will blacklist you. 

Having worked in modern Civil Service departments I can honestly say, thankfully, Land Registry was the exception and other departments are far more modern with much more diversity in management and robust procedures to give staff the ability to challenge behaviour. Do not challenge behaviour here as it could lead to the demise of your career.

A small but important department providing certainty of tenure of legal estates in land within the provisions of the Land Registration Acts and Rules.  Taking into account common law, equitable law and the many laws enacted by parliament which affects land ownership.

I enjoyed several roles over the years..
Technical - resolution of imperfections in title, disputes and problem solving as part of a team of experts.  Real satisfaction.
Management - working as team leader for up to 70 staff providing technical and career development, appraisal, grievance, managing attendance, discipline...while organising teams to meat production targets - financial, accuracy and time..and still being able to have friends at all levels.

I was frustrated when dealing with red tape and ineffective managers but equally happy to be given freedom to operate when working with enlightened managers!

I enjoyed meeting or beating targets by being clever and working with people getting the best out of them rather than on the backs of staff.  I also enjoyed bringing people on and giving them confidence in their own abilities.

I have been a part of the HM Land Registry team for the past three years and it has been a fulfilling experience. The organization values its employees and provides a supportive work environment that fosters professional growth. The management is approachable and open to feedback, which has allowed me to contribute to the continuous improvement of our processes.

One of the things I appreciate about working at HM Land Registry is the emphasis on teamwork and collaboration. My colleagues are knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to lend a hand, which has made for a positive and enjoyable work experience. The organization also provides ample training opportunities and invests in the latest technology to ensure that we are equipped with the skills and tools necessary to perform our jobs effectively.

In conclusion, I am proud to be a part of the HM Land Registry team and would highly recommend it as a great place to work. The organization values its employees, provides a positive work environment, and offers ample opportunities for professional growth.

Not too long ago would have said that this was one of the better jobs I have ever had, pay was fair for the work required and there was a good sense of community and opportunities for development and advancement. However due to changes in the senior management and ill advised restructuring the job has become an absolute misery. We seem to act wholly for the benefit of conveyancers without any regard to the public we are meant to serve. Training and development has become a dirty phrase to utter in the organisation and you will now be siloed into the 1 repetitive task without any hope of doing anything different task until you quit, retire or die. Upper Management are completely unaware of what is going on further down in the organisation and middle management are content to lie to them for their own benefit. AVOID. 

great work/life balance with the flexible working hours and good pay for the work you do but extremely boring and repetitive, no progression whatsoever especially for the lower grades. Managers have their favourites and if you arent one then you are disliked by managers and are given no opportunities. Management is honestly appalling they have no concern for mental health and wellbeing of employees and aren't even trained on it! They don't want to know when you raise issues and challenge you when you make them. Complete favouritism, job isn't too bad but management ruins the whole thing, completely appalling.

I've learned a lot within the workplace, primarily administrative duties, tasks, how to delegate tasks, leadership and teamwork, but more importantly communication and service. Although i wasn't able to fully show my potential due to limitations (lack of promotion or development), it is a great place to work and management are ok.

The hardest part of the job is keeping up to date with policy changes and withstanding the fact that you may be stuck where you are, doing the same thing, for years due to lack of development opportunities and hard interviews.

The easiest and most enjoyable part if having FLEXI and the work itself.
