Mid-Sussex-District-Council

Worked here for 16 years. Started as a contractor and became permanent. The company has a mix of people, many of whom were a pleasure to work with and have a passion for making a difference in our community.

The Chief Executive is rarely seen except once a year in the formal briefings; unlike where I am now in an organisation ten times the size and we get regular correspondence from the Chief Exec. This lack of communication, I believe, lays the foundation for the management underneath.

I believe there is a lack of willingness to tackle inappropriate behaviour and management closes ranks when challenged, with a tendency to make the victim a villain, rather than face any unpleasant behaviour head on and take the individuals responsible to task. This has engendered an environment where people try and keep their heads down and avoid trouble until retirement. If trouble does come, it is easier to move out of MSDC than challenge a culture that doesn't want to change, and in my opinion MSDC has lost some very committed people because of this. The ex-colleagues I've continued to speak with since leaving, have confirmed that nothing has changed in this regard.

The council has performed well as a body, while other local government organisations have struggled financially, and there is a lot to be said for that. However, the culture is wearing and you will have to be strong to withstand it for any length of time. In part, its success is down to the determination and commitment of some very good people; but the fragmentation will mean that you will likely have to watch your back; when MSDC could really shine if it tackled the difficult issues that all organisations face.

I joined the Digital and Technology team as part of a major restructure 3 years ago. The result of that restructure is a nothing short of incredible. I have never worked anywhere that produces such collaboration and support. We are never left alone and even when the workload is high, which it regularly is, you always feel like there is multiple people at hand to help out. More often than not they will offer their help before you even think to ask. 
The support doesn't stop with those you work alongside either. The management of this team is again, incredible. Regular reviews are never missed and never feel like a box-ticking exercise. We are all treated like adults and given autonomy and respect. This all promotes a willingness to push ourselves and never feel like we can't voice our opinions or put forward new ideas. 
We are constantly driving to improve all our services and even in the short time I have been here I have picked up so many new skills and achieved more than I was able to any other role. Access to training resources is also provided and we are always encouraged to put time aside to make use of them.
While there may be work to do to promote this ethos to other teams, a recent management restructure is aimed at enabling those in the relevant roles to do that. 
From my experience I cannot recommend an employer any more. It is a fantastic place to work.

I've worked with Mid Sussex for over a year now during a challenging time amidst a pandemic and restructure. However, from day 1 the Digital team has been friendly, inclusive and supportive.  We collaborate often so I am always learning something new. Its been a great place to develop my career and possibly one of the best places I've worked. Your work is acknowledged, valued and appreciated. I feel empowered to share my ideas and give feedback. Training is always encouraged to develop in your role. Also, we are all treated like adults and given autonomy and respect in our role. 

Although I don't know much about the environment pre - restructure, I am hopeful for the future. Post restructure management has been asking the staff for feedback and are actively engaging to make the council a better place to work. They've introduced hybrid working and equipped staff with the necessary tech to make working from home better which has improved  work/life balance. 

I truly enjoy working for Mid Sussex District Council. We work hard to improve access to digital services for residents which makes the role rewarding as well.  

There is never a typical day at work as we have a range of internal customers needs to fulfil & public facing systems to provide.

We share ideas across the Digital team to find creative solutions to problems we face and are encouraged to learn and master skills outside the traditional job definitions/roles, so I usually learn something new every day.

I am part of a fun, supportive and inclusive team and the management is exceptionally flexible and understanding, allowing me an excellent work/life balance. This team has formed in the last few years following a re-organisation within the Department.

The hardest parts of the job is dealing competing demands for support and development, plus getting third-party suppliers to resolve issues with their software in a timely manner. These challenges are common to every other role in IT I have experienced, be it private or public sector.

In addition to the enjoyment for being part of the team, the most rewarding part of the job is helping people either overcome a problem or help them have an easier, more effective means to service to our citizens needs.

After spending 25 years with MSDC I was initially very impressed with their attitude towards staff but unfortunately during my last few years with them the quality of management nosedived to a very poor level. With no effort by top management to interact or involve staff or make them feel of any value whatsoever, morale fell significantly. There was also very little consultation on important decisions, and any that did take place was pure lip service as they had already made up their minds what was going to happen. I certainly would not recommend MSDC as a place to feel secure or valued in your work. AVOID!

I joined the digital team after a major restructure. It's a fun environment where collaboration is encouraged. Hard work is valued and acknowledged and my role is varied and interesting.
The organisation has modernised significantly over the last few years. Hybrid and home working is available as well as flexitime, so the work-life balance is great.

I started working here as I wanted a job with more flexibility. Although the structure and organisation are not great and you have to build your own processes and procedures it’s a great company to work for. They value criticism and better ways of working. Very little support from management as everyone is over worked and extremely busy. If you like to work with friendly staff it’s the place for you

Mid Sussex District Council is all front. Behind to façade there is little substance- poor performing staff permeate all levels and attitudes have languished some years behind other organisations I have worked for. Flexible working is in its infancy. Change is avoided and viewed with suspicion- if you want to innovate and learn this is not the place for you

I worked in the IT team and it was a fantastic experience. The collaboration, dedication and overall work ethic makes it an incredibly enjoyable place to work. The flexible working was so helpful and you get given the freedom to experiment and create solutions to problems. 

PRESSURED ENVIRONMENT, DEALING WITH LARGE VOLUMES OF WORK AND REQUIREMENT TO BE ABLE TO MULTI-TASK, DUE TO UNDERSTAFFING.  ENJOYED WORKING SOLO OR AS PART OF A TEAM.
