I thoroughly enjoyed working at North Herts College. A typical day for me would start with voicemails informing of absences of both students and staff. Although I always plan my day at the very least in my head, those plans could change and I could then be doing anything from producing offer letters to arranging rotas for Open Days, to booking tickets for an enrichment trip.

The excellent working relationships I forged in ten years were many and included outside organisations such as our Kit and Uniform suppliers, our IT technicians, Student Records personnel, our Additional Support Team manager and my fantastic tutors and technicians in the Hair and Beauty department. We could have such an enjoyable day whilst still getting the job done. 

The most enjoyable part of the job was watching  the journey of some of our students. I have watched youngsters and mature students come into the department with a lack of confidence, self esteem, achievement and at the end of their programme of study, they are completely different people, more confident, qualified and making plans for the future. It is a good feeling to be part of something that can change or enhance the life of someone else.

The hardest part of the job is the lack of hours in a day that you sometimes need to complete your 'to do' list! The hard part now for me is going back to visit my tutors and seeing the complete chaos they are in without the one constant that was in the department which was me, always at my desk ready to help, advise and support.

If I had my way I would still be there, I did not choose to leave my job. I can only say the financial responsibilities  of a £10 million pound rebuiild forced management to lay off almost 100 members of the administration and customer service teams, many of whom would also still be there if given the choice.

I think these events have to be looked at as a chance to develop further, meet new people and new challenges. Hopefully very soon.

I interviewed for a 0.5 role, but was pleased to start as a full time Lecturer. I enjoyed my duties and being part of a friendly department, during the first term. At the beginning of the 2nd term I had to, as expected, drop to the 0.5 role that I interviewed for. Unfortunately, the incumbent Head of Department decreed that I should make up the apparent shortfall of hours that I wasn't given in the first term. These hours were significantly over and above the hours I was contracted to do and effectively meant that I was not paid for any additional hours that I took on, which I had originally been told that I would be paid. As a result, I tendered my resignation and left half-way through the 3rd term. Fortunately, although I did leave, a change in management considered in favour of my grievance and I was, ultimately, paid for the additional hours worked. Before the change in management, I had considerable resentment and bitterness towards this particular manager and for the College as a whole.

The management have no idea how to treat people and there is little or no support and when it all goes wrong employees get hauled over the coals. 
The college in Stevenage was run down,with very old computers and they did not put the heating on until icicles were practically forming on a person's nose. It was grubby and the atmosphere was awful.

My fellow teachers felt extremely unhappy, felt bullied and  and the union is so demoralised that management can do whatever they  want which includes appalling treatment of staff - you may have notided the big turnover of staff here.

I would like to include the most enjoyable part of the job but this did not exist during my short tenure there.

I went off sick and was promptly sacked by management - nice.
Avoid working here at all costs- choose fish gutting on a norweigan trawler in mid-winter and get paid in bottle caps as a alternative.Believe me it would be more rewarding.

I worked here for a number of years as a lecturer. A once happy, supportive working environment gradually changed into a stressful, target-obsessed organisation in which bullying management caused staff turnover to increase to such a point that the more effective teaching staff moved to work elsewhere.

There were far too many managers, many with overlapping responsibilities and some promoted beyond their abilities. There was very little in the way of effective and supportive leadership. Experienced, long-term lecturers and support staff started leaving in their droves from 2015 onward, at which point I'm afraid I too decided to abandon ship.

There was too much focus on enrolling as many students as possible, regardless of whether their course and level was suitable for them. Consequently, many students struggled to achieve.

Whilst working at North Hertfordshire College I was moved around many different places and doing things that were out of my job spectrum.

I think the culture there is completely different to the real working world as when I moved to a different job it was a shock.

I wasn't given any help or proper handovers when moving to different areas.

There were no opportunities for me to progress with the company even though I had been told many times there would be. No one listened to my training and development needs.

There were so many redundancies and everyone's moods were low - no one wanted to be there.

The only good thing I can say is that I had a really good line Manager who kept me going until it was time to move on.

Worked here for many years. At the beginning it was honestly such an amazing place to work but unfortunately due to the numbers of mental health with the students rising year by year, there is alot of safeguarding and not enough staff or trained staff to be able to support. Also due to not having enough staff you are expected to cover for all the other positions they are not able to fill, meaning that you end up doing other people's roles as well as your own, making it a very stressful environment and feeling like you cant concentrate on your own role. Apart from this it is a nice place to work but only because of the positive people we work with. 

Its all about money - squeezing in as many students as possible to generate as much income as possible, giving staff more and more work for no reward, and squeezing budgets so there is no money for equipment and consummables. Far too many managers and not enough good staff on the ground.There is an inflexible and almost a bullying atmosphere by senior management, and they do not value or support staff.Their PDR system has been designed so that its virtualy impossible to get a pay rise. They cannot fail be to aware of the level of discontent but they simply either ride rough-shod over it or ignore it entirely.Would not say that this is a happy place to work anymore.

I have a very interactive role, meeting a varied client base, within national companies and SMEs. This involves balancing a busy work schedule in the office and out on the road.

I love to provide the coaching and guidance to my clients, supporting and influencing their decisions.

I would summarise myself as a ‘people person’ someone who works well leading a busy team as well as being the ‘team member’ 

I have a positive attitude with a ‘can do’ attitude which is essential in the job role and life!

I will work with students either 1:1 or whole class, I learn a lot, as they are interesting lessons.  The management for both the college and my department are very fair and want the best for the college, staff and pupils. In my team we have some lovely people who are caring and willing to help.  I find the hardest part of my job is walking into a class of students I don't know, but once you start working with them its fine.  Seeing the students achieve different targets, and finishing their course work with good grades.

A dictatorship culture is slowly arising as mangers are justifying the worth in the company. Generally staff in all departments are fun and friendly to work with but are demoralised by a poor management culture.  Initially mangers tend to market support and promotion at interviews,  however, once you are in the role many of the agreements, such as support for further studies and work from home is lacking and discouraged.
