This happened to me a few years ago but now i have found the courage to speak about my experience here.This review is based only for Surbiton as i cannot say for other sites.

When I first started working for the company I was welcomed with open arms, they were very friendly to start off with and were eager to know me as a character but sadly this was very short.

Managers are self-obsessed with hitting unrealistic targets and membership sales so the workers suffer, if you say something you are singled out and attacked like a pack of wolfs and you are and will be made out to be a liar at any costs. Management bangs on about how the rules need to be stuck too, yet they are the ones who bend the rules to please people. The help you receive is laughable at best and if it doesn't suit them then it simply doesn't happen. Sales were a top priority there as they seem to care more about membership sales then about their current members. Extremely unprofessional, Your issues are never, listened to or addressed, Extremely poor management, Take advantage of you, Always under staffed, High staff turnover, Discrimination and Never valued. 


Managers can't seem to do a simple fair rota so you are left with a lot of very unhappy staff and lots of demotivated staff. They will manipulate rotas to suit their personal lives and what is best for their "friends and favorites". Question them or request certain shifts the WILL make your life difficult there, some staff are very spoilt and selfish, rules don’t apply to everyone. All they care about is up selling and not the quality of service for their clients. Staff are treated like slaves and rarely get the breaks they deserve. Management are target driven but not interested in looking after the existing staff, resulting in quick turnaround. It seems no matter what you do its never enough for Nuffield, with constant threats of losing your job. 

The site is based around managers promoting people they get on with and not the people who deserve it. I joined the company with the intentions to progress. They'll do anything to make you work more hours and not pay you for them. The management don't set a good example of how to act as they spent the majority of their time messing around with staff. If you have a problem they'll give you a sarcastic answer and continue to be rude to you too. Your job is never secure either as you'll consistently see them putting up jobs on indeed when they've got a full team. 

In terms of life balance they couldn't care less about your personal life commitments, they'll try to make you work every weekend and finish late on the majority of days. 

I was fooled to believe there would be opportunities to progress in the company, these are reserved for managers "friends" and some roles are filled with people who are clearly not suited for the role
Beware!!!! This place WILL make you ill if you work there, you will not receive any help. More to the point departments is run by people who will try and put all their friends in posts rather than people who have the right skills so there is no progression if you’re not in the click.

The customers do not come first like is advised at the interview and the feeling of being used is felt from most staff who are frightened to speak up because they need a job All staff are over worked , and it is so sad to think of this lovely building and top class facilities being run by very un-happy staff who most want to leave after a few days when they see just what goes on .I feel so sorry because if people were paid a decent wage , they would be able to build a great team who would feel appreciated and I feel sure this would have a tremendous effect on the staff morale .Never time for lunches or breaks , which in my eyes is a must , if only to get away from the working environment , it would help staff feel much better. 

After 3 months of working at there I was horrified that they were going to let me go and instead of aiding a new starter by doing one to ones, reviews and telling me where to improve, they instead forced me to resign there and then and kept bullying me to do so until I did then making me out that I wasn't suited for the job/company. It was every hour that they were hassling me then they were making it out that they were doing me the favor WRONG!!!! it was me doing them the favor. It was a case of leave or gets sacked so I walked there and then NEVER have I done this before. I have worked at many sites ranging from leisure centers to private health club never in the 7 years has this happened to me. It is very clear that they use bullying tactics to go through the day. I felt that it was more a personal decision then a professional decision given my exit as I really felt that I was only ever employed to bail them out of a tough period, I was constantly hounded for a resignation as they felt that i didn't suit the business on a regular basis (real reason i didn't fit in there click) I was bullied out of my job so they could replace me with one of their friends; I was then later banned me from their site and told i could no longer work for the company as a whole due to not being in the "CLICK". It’s like having a criminal record for something i didn't do. Was also told that i couldn't be a member at any site due to this.

You must think very hard before taking on a role here.
some very nice people work at Nuffield, but very few know that in the big wide world they will be respected more and cared for when a company knows you have qualities they will want to keep you, not treat you like a door mat .I know that if your just starting out in your working life this place will put you off, but please remember you will be respected and appreciated do not let this place put you off, your next job will be so different. I just wish money was spent on proper training and that customer comments were listened too.

They promised so much but only and ever delivered disappointment. Always being give more and more but not allowed any help. ( only get help if your one of the handpicked) they take and take and take and will give nothing back not even a thank you. They talk the talk but they cannot walk the walk. Your just a number to them you’re not even considered a human being as far as they are concerned. I could remember having to physically crawl out at the end of my shifts as i could never use their facilities not even for a simple swim/gym as I was just too tired after my shifts. 

Let it be known that I worked for and with some great colleagues but they were scarce. Most, if not all of my colleagues did not like their job and simply used Nuffield as a stop gap. Overall it was too much work, under trashy conditions for mercenary management, for such little return.

This really saddens me to write as I never write bad reviews but I sadly I feel that this is a definite must. This took a massive strain on not only my career but my mental health. Confidence crushed, ambitions lost. Self-esteem stripped and career goals smashed.

Overall my experience has been poor. I cannot recommend working here at all. Im not one to preach "I was perfect they had it in for me" I made mistake as we all do were human but the way I was treated was appalling.

I have worked at 2 different sites but the last site I worked for I was completly pushed out.

When I first started here as a duty manager I was excited and raring to ga as I was told I could run lifeguard courses here. This was a mistake as I saw so many red flags show up during the first week. It became very apparent that in reality the job was not a duty manager job, you are a receptionist/sales consultant. Despite the very high charges to customers, staff are paid minimum wage no matter your qualifications and the extra you do for the company. The company only care about membership sales and are even rude when you submit the report late.

Management left the worst taste in my mouth following working here. Management were all over the place and really cared about themselves. This really showed in the rota and how they were being done, the rota was poor and unfair. You would commonly do all the lates and weekends to accomodate the personal lives of managers and the click. When you finally score a weekend off or doing more earlies then lates, the rota would be changed at the very last second and you'll be expected to work. ZERO work life balance, I was told in my interveiw that I would be doing every other weekend but instead I was working every weekend not to mention 4-7 lates a week. I was working 6-7 days most weeks, they even had me work a 9 day week before. Your life will be based around the accomodations and personal lives of managers so be prepared to give your life up. I was honestly reduced to tears in this place, every time coming home I felt deflated and worthless to the point I dreaded coming back the next day.


From the moment the attitudes of the company were made very clear to me, management are power happy and love to pick and humiliate you. There quick to point out your mistakes but never praise any progress that you make. Hard workers are not valued but instead picked on and those who slack off, rude and lazy are favoured more. Due to most staff being young and not wanting to make a scene, this continued to happen after a few staff raised concerns, and the changes only affected the ones who said anything. Management don’t set a good example on how to behave as they spend most of the time messing around, they never support you unless your in the group. Management seems to only care about numbers. New staff aren’t aloud to join in and bond as were told to go away. I clearly wasn’t in the crowd nor did I try and want to be.

The moment you put in a complaint or try and voice any concerns your sacked on the spot for made up reasons and they will make them up and even have others back up their lies. You speak out against the click your singled out like a pack of wolves and you are and will be made out to be a liar at any costs. If your more popular then the managers or the click you are deemed as a threat.

The turnover for this company is very high and very alarming which really doesn't surprise me as I can remember seeing 2-4 staff members come in once and stayed for one day (correct day) and walked out and others after what they saw and realized what they were letting themselves Infor did the same.

There is a clear protection of clicks here so if you’re not in it, you won’t last very long. I remember on an open day for everyone to be gathered around but then got told to go away just so the “gang” to be in a photo for their social media page. Never have I been so humiliated and embarrassed and it was just out right hurtful.

If you’re looking for progression this company isn’t the place as those roles are held and reserved for managers “friends” and their family members and not only are they not suited but they do not deserve it.

Favouritism is a BIG problem here especially the management team. If your in the click you'll be fine but if not your already finished once you have served your purpose. Managers seem to hide around corners to try and catch you out and then use it against you. Your name is then ruined despite not actually meeting these people.


What I found horrifying and shocking was after working at my new site for 3 months, instead of doing one to ones, reveiws etc they forced me to resign there and then telling me I wasn't cut out for the job (despite working at another site and passing my probation) I argued saying it wasn't a probationed job and they just told me to leave as my role has now been filled. Furious being forced to leave I walked out, never have I done this. 


I was in the end completely pushed out. I went above and beyond for this company and what was asked from me and yet it was still never good enough and still I could get nothing right. I think the turnover of staff here explains why no career growth, no recognition, poor pay, favouritism, no work life balance, no fairness and no support. I think the company needs to take a good long hard look in the mirror and sort their managers out.

During my time here I was spoken down to, sworn at, picked on, bullied, miss treated, yelled at, blamed, discriminated, exploited and even verbually threatened on more than one occasion.  

Advice for management

Just because you have all been here for years, you need to change. Staff are not to blame for your failings. When staff are calling in sick this is to avoid you. Management are the problem no question. Stand by your staff and support them and not just throw them out after they make a complaint. Progression are for those who deserve it and not your friends and favorites.

I spent over a year working as a Duty Manager at Nuffield Health, and it was an experience that ultimately left me feeling drained and demoralized. From the start, I was enthusiastic about the role, but that quickly changed due to the toxic work environment and mismanagement.

One of the most pressing issues was the constant manipulation of the rota. I was repeatedly assigned late shifts and weekends, often without any advance notice. It became clear that the rotas were being used as a tool to accommodate the personal lives of the management team, while staff like myself were left with little regard for our own work-life balance. I was consistently scheduled for 4-5 late shifts a week and nearly every weekend, which became incredibly draining. The worst part was that if I ever had a weekend off or was scheduled for more earlies than lates, the rota would be changed at the last minute. I was expected to drop everything and come in to cover shifts, and it seemed like the needs of the staff were always secondary to the convenience of the management team.

This situation escalated when, during a planned staff day out, I was told at the last minute that I had to work a late shift. I had already packed my bag and bought my train ticket, but I was informed that the "business demands it" and that I had to stay and work. What I later discovered was that my shift was changed to allow one of the Assistant General Manager's favorites to go on the day out instead of me. I was forced to work 12 hours to accommodate this, so someone else could attend a social event. This blatant manipulation of the rota was the breaking point for me. I realized that my personal time didn’t matter, and that the management team was willing to sacrifice employees' well-being for their own convenience.

When I reported this issue to HR, hoping for some kind of resolution, the response was far from supportive. I was met with immediate hostility, particularly from the General Manager and Assistant General Manager at my site. Rather than addressing the unfair treatment, they dismissed my concerns, belittled me, and made snide comments, making it clear that speaking out against their unfair practices would not be tolerated. The culture of favoritism and manipulation was deeply entrenched, and it was evident that anyone who dared to challenge the system would be targeted.

The lack of progression at Nuffield was another major issue. Promotions and opportunities for advancement were only available to those in the “inner circle” of management—people who were friends with senior leaders—regardless of their qualifications or abilities. I worked tirelessly, but it was clear that my hard work meant nothing because I wasn’t part of that group. This created a very toxic environment, where staff felt powerless and undervalued.

Ultimately, after enduring months of mistreatment, I was pushed out of the company. Nuffield did everything they could to make me feel like I wasn’t "suited for the business" and forced me to resign under the guise of poor performance. To make matters worse, they started spreading lies about me to other sites, tarnishing my reputation even though I had never met many of these people. My name was blacklisted, and I found it nearly impossible to seek employment within the company again.

In conclusion, my time at Nuffield Health was a constant battle. The management’s toxic behavior, the unfair treatment regarding rotas, and the culture of favoritism made it clear that this is not a company that values or respects its employees. I would strongly advise anyone considering a role at Nuffield to look elsewhere, as the company offers no support, no career progression, and no respect for its staff.

If you are thinking about working for Nuffield Healthcare as a Bank Driver at the support unit in Tiverton then think long and hard. I did the best part of two years in two different spells but couldn’t get out of there quickly enough. 
First of all you will be expected to work one month in hand, meaning it is highly likely you will not get your first pay until at least two months completed service, and you will always be owed at least one month’s salary.  The Lead Driver will omit to tell you this at interview or job confirmation, either as a tactic (just to get you in) or because he can’t cope with fine details. You decide. 
You will be paid the bare minimum they can get away with. In my case £7.88 per hour with the only increment when they are forced to when the minimum or living wage thresholds are raised. 
There are no development opportunities or incentives for length of service. New contracts come in and the management will urge you to work above and beyond to impress new and established customers. No thanks when you do this; the odd general email may be shared in the staff room salivating about sales increases and big cost savings but no reward is dripped down to the drivers for their part of any success. Not even a Christmas bonus. 
The payroll team are simply incompetent. Payslips are complicated (which I believe is a tactic so you are never really sure what you have been paid for, or if you have been paid the full amount for the hours you have completed). I had reason to dispute pretty much every single payslip I received. I left in January and, at the time of writing (mid-March), have yet to receive my final payslip. 
In both my spells there the payroll failed to implement my tax code in a timely fashion. In the first spell it took six months before action was taken and didn’t happen at all in my second spell of seven months, meaning I paid emergency tax unnecessarily for long periods and was always out of pocket. And their pathetic opt out is to blame HMRC – an easy target but who had actually done their bit by issuing the code at the start of the tax year. 
As a low paid worker it is vital that you are at least paid for the work you have completed and you get every penny on time. At the time of writing this I am out of pocket by £1900, equating to £500 in unpaid wages and £1400 that the taxman has taken due to Nuffield incompetence. This is the equivalent of two months’ take home pay. 
There have been similar issues with the last three drivers employed there before me, and more before that, so it’s not just me. 
And then you have the “privilege” of working with the Neanderthal Man that is the Lead Driver. You can expect to be spoken to like a child by him with colourful language, especially if you have the audacity to have an opinion other than his. It is like stepping back to a darker time. 
There is a definite culture of bullying and intimidation.
So, with all the above in mind, I left only to be told by former colleagues the Neanderthal is now publicly reflecting on my employment there unfavourably and abusively. Yet I worked hard, my attendance record was first-class (going to work even when feeling ill), I was polite and popular with customers and colleagues, there were no dramas with my driving and I did not involve myself with office politics and chit-chat. I just did my job as well as I could. 
This how Nuffield treat hard working drivers. It is just not good enough.
Working for Nuffield Healthcare is certainly not good for your health. So if it is exercise you want then jog on! Away from Nuffield in Tiverton.

My husband has been working as a personal trainer for Nuffield for almost a year and I am appalled by the reality of his position compared to what was advertised. I can only share my perspective on one gym but feel it is my responsibility to share. In our experience, what other reviewers have written about Nuffield only being interested in members, numbers and profit is entirely correct. They seem to care very little about the wellbeing of their trainers. 

Firstly let me warn any newly qualified PTs - you will not be able to earn the salary that Nuffield advertises. PTs are contracted for 8 hours of shift work per week at minimum wage and all other earnings come from clients. At face value this is fine, but my husband's gym employs far too many trainers which prevents them from building up a large enough client base to earn a decent salary. On top of this, the percentage of client payments that Nuffield takes is massive for the first few sessions per week. As most of the trainers struggle to get above this number they never actually reach a decent hourly rate. In reality, many of my husband's colleagues work a second job to supplement their income from Nuffield. This is a ridiculous position to be faced with if you are serious about a career in personal training and are committed to achieving excellence. My husband is struggling to earn the equivalent of working 40 hours a week at minimum wage for offering a top quality service that is regularly complimented by members. Nuffield's trainers are the face of it's gym and it amazes me how little they are valued.

Has all of this been raised with management? Yes. But although Nuffield managers have seemed open and supportive at the time very little actually happens. The overall attitude seems to be one of 'fend for yourself'. Shift rotas also seem very unfair with some trainers being given back to back peak hour shifts each week (which has a significant impact on time for training clients) while others get only mornings or early afternoons which are much more convenient. 

One thing I will say for Nuffield is that the employee benefits are good. However, the advertised in house training has been another huge let down. One of the things that attracted my husband to Nuffield over other gyms were the prospects for further development as a trainer, but has been told there is 'no budget' for him to go on courses at the moment. He was given the option of doing the training if he paid the majority of the fees himself (for example £500 to complete a Les Mills training course to be able to run classes at the gym) however this is not economically viable given how much time it would take him to earn this investment back at Nuffield's current rate of pay for fitness classes.

Overall, it's been a really disappointing experience for us and personally it's been hard to watch my husband continue to be committed and hardworking while getting paid very little and feeling increasingly stifled in his career. I previously considered Nuffield to be a respectable and fair company and given their core business of health and wellbeing presumed that they would be leaders in promoting the wellbeing of their own staff. Sadly it seems this is not the case. Be very wary of what you read in the job advertisment.

In my club, most PT are given a 8 hours contract, some were given 24 hours. Most of us started with 24 hours and they slowly reduce it to 8 (if you have a 8 hours contract), and you will have to sale PT sessions to live. There were very little support on how to sale PT or how to deliver gym floor classes, which you need especially if you are new to the field. For a 8 hours shift, you are packed with inductions, gym floor classes and to deliver health MOT to clients. The rest of the time you will need to clean the gym, despite they want you to interact with the members as well. 

You have to deliver at least 8 PT sessions weekly to keep your job after the 3 months trial, which to be fair isn't that hard, but this is the thing which constantly pressuring you in the back of the head, and make you keep pushing the overpriced PT sessions to those who don't really need them. The PT sessions cost £38 an hour, if client is on monthly direct Debit with 4 sessions a month, and up to £48 per session if they would like up to 10 sessions. On top of the membership, it can costs up to £220 a month in my club. PT are given very little freedom to run their own PT business, i.e. PT cannot charge their own price or package, cannot run the classes they are good at etc, despite the company always try to convince you that this is your own business, which is clearly not. 

They also encourage you to come outwith your shift to interact with potential PT clients; lets not forget  PT get paid only if the session has been delivered, not when the clients pays the club to buy those sessions, therefore, if, for any reasons, clients does not come back for their already paid sessions, the club keeps the money, rather than the PT. 

The money that actually go into the PT pocket is low, £13.5 for the first 5 sessions, £19 for the 6th to 10th, and £23 for 11th onward, on a weekly basis (as of 2019); This is to say, the club encourages you coming in outwith your hours, mainly for the benefit of the club, not the PT themself; and, you cannot do the PT clients programme on shift, but at your own time. They really try very hard to convince you that you are running your own PT business, despite you are clearly not. 

The standards between PTs vary significantly; some of my fellows PTs really had no clue, (to be fair this happen in almost all fitness industry), but the way the club operates, almost making clients to feel all PT are the same, and you get clients largely depends on a random basis rather than because of your ability or strong link.  

It can be a good place for a brand new PT to start, but it can certainly not able to keep those who are good at what they do.

The free membership ( plus one family membership for £5 a month) and, occasionally training courses, however, I have to give credit to.

Their personal trainer job is a ridiculous setup which is essentially unbelievable as a wellbeing company. 

Vast majority of PTs are given a 8 contract which is min pay. After the 3 months probation period you will then need to carry out at least 8 PT sessions to keep your job. On the face value this isn't hard, the real issue is they employ far, far too many PTs: for a 400o members club, there are up to 15 PTs. This does not only create a very unhealthy competition, but PTs are facing hard time to build up a large enough client base to make a decent income. You will not make the salary they claim you can make, those numbers just exist mathematically.

The other issue is the cut they take away from the PTs paid by the members. The company retain over half of the money for the first 10 sessions PT would deliver and half from the 11th onward, on a weekly basis. If you delivery 20 sessions a week(if you are lucky enough to have 20 a week), the money they take away is more than £700! 

The way they operate is like a shark tank as if it was natural selection: whoever survive are the best(for the company). 

During your 8 shift, you are absolutely packed with doing inductions, Health MOT and gym floor classes, plus, cleaning. You are left with very limited time to actual interact with the members which is the main way to attract clients. 

For a day I used to work, I could be needing to do 3 inductions, 3 MOTs, 3 classes. plus cleaning, plus equipment checking, plus re-racking the gym etc etc. This is an insane workload for min pay and as a fitness professional.

The amount of PTs needing to have a 2nd job to stay above the water is also unbelievable: you simply cannot rely on this job alone to survive.   

This is an absolutely ridiculous job to have in the modern days in the UK. The turn over of the PTs in each club says it all. 

Do not fall in to the trap that you are getting paid for the shifts(unlike the Gym group or Pure Gym etc),  it does not worth it at all. 

I went into the job as an experience PT, thinking Nuffield was a good company, I could not be more wrong. I can objectively say Nuffield is the worst Health and Fitness company I have worked for in my 12 years career as a fitness professional. 

Unless you are facing an eviction from your home next month, do not take this job.   
  

I had a great interview, the two ladies who interviewed me were really lovely and made me feel completely at ease. The way the interview was conducted, as an interviewee, I felt this style allowed me to be my authentic self and to actually enjoy the interview rather than feeling on edge and a nervous wreck; I left feeling really excited and quietly confident.

For the full time position, you work 37.5 hours  over the course of five days and the opening hours are:

Monday to Friday - 08:00 to 20:00
Saturday - 09:00 to 13:00

The Contact Centre (HQ) closes at 18:00 and is closed on Saturday’s too, so if you are scheduled to work past 18:00 or on a Saturday, those shifts will be worked from home.

A few days after my interview, I got offered the job and I was beyond delighted!

There is a four day induction and on the fifth day you meet your team followed by a few weeks of systems training.

During the training and initially going live in the Contact Centre, you are always reassured that it takes a few months to settle into the role and to get a grasp of the different systems and procedures.

The Contract Centre has a group of ‘mean girls’ causing a very cliquey environment; you could feel the shift in atmosphere when the ‘mean girls’ were not working in the office. The majority of  the coordinators know each other from school / college and if you’re over the age of 30, then you’re ancient.

Once you are live, you are expected to fly! If you can’t fly and you have asked for additional assistance during the systems training, this will be held against you. If you can’t fly and you have asked for additional assistance once you are ‘live’, this will be held against you. By this point, your wings are clipped and you are shown the door.

The only objective is to get bums on seats in the Contract Centre whether you are ready to go live or not. This is one of the reasons why the Contact Centre Coordinator recruitment conveyor belt never stops because of the high turnover of staff.


A typical day at work would begin by opening the gym and completing checks which you would replete throughout your work day. I would then check my emails and lead the morning team meeting to prepare for the day, dealing with any issues which may have occurred. I would then Delegate jobs to the Reception team and Gym team. 
After everyone was organised and up to date I would then start dealing with existing and potential new memberships, this would include emailing and calling potential clients and liaising with excising members. 
As a sales and marketing manager I would continue building a database of clientele including focusing on corporate deals and continue to create a variety of marketing and PR strategy's for the company. I would organize outreach which I would also take part in as I found it was positive for the team if I got involved. We had daily, monthly and quarterly targets which had to be met and I am pleased to say we exceeded target most months. Between this I would complete reception duties which included answering and transferring calls, using the fax machine and photocopier as well as meeting and greeting. Towards the end of my shift I would email a brief summary of the day to my manager and also have a handover meeting with my college who would be taking over. 
I have enjoyed my time at Nuffield Health and have gained allot of skills working for Nuffield Health which I will bring with me to my next roll. One of the most useful and important skills I learned was how to operate a variety of computer programs and work under pressure while being organised and one step ahead. All my co-workers including management were very sportive of each other and it was a great team to be a part of. The most enjoyable part of the job as well as the most challenging was creating sales and overachieving my targets.

I worked huge numbers of hours to build my business and did very well within just over a year. The fact you get paid for shifts allows you to at least earn a wage that pays the bills in the meantime. 
However, I took on an additional role, then was told that I wouldn’t be suitable to progress further, despite being very good at all 3 roles I was doing. (Lead, PT and group ex)
I have paid for all of my own CPD and additional courses, the courses you get paid for aren’t applicable anywhere else so aren’t of use for moving to another company. 
After leaving my additional role, I took on a different additional role which supports the charity aspect of Nuffield. However, when you do this, the pay for the additional role effectively reduces your holiday pay in total so, it cost me £2000 in holiday pay in a year. I wasn’t aware of this despite asking why my holiday pay was “wrong” several times. I had never signed a contract or been informed of this “agreement”. 
It’s all part of the ruse of the business being a charity- really the staff are the charity. Even at top levels (delivering 25+ sessions per week) you still only take 52% of what your clients are paying. 
Considering some staff are extremely well qualified, there is no real recognition of this and staff turnover is high. Also, by employing too many PTs, they ensure that no one can build a big business and keep it for long. This gives them a greater cut of all the PTs money that they are bringing in. 
I personally have 6 managers at any given time that I need to answer to and it is frustrating that my “rent” pays their salaries as some of them are terrible (3 recent ones have had written warnings in the past) however, some managers are good, or at least try to be. 
Overall, hugely disappointing and unfulfilling which is why I left.
