Primark

A department manager is responsible for using reports weekly and daily to set up a department for commercial success. They are responsible for ordering the stock and how the department is laid out based on best selling lines, proportional sales for each section and promoting markdowns to clear less popular or soon to be out of season stock. In order to achieve this they manage and develop a team whose size is relative to the sales of their department. This same team will have the main priority of delivering excellent customer service through serving on tills, keeping the department tidy and through assisting customers on the sales floor. They are responsible for managing the performance and development of this team using formal reviews, formal meetings where necessary about attendance, conduct or performance and (for me) most importantly informal coaching in all of these areas. Their team is part of a larger team running the whole store so they need to have excellent communication and flexibility to work with and support other managers to make sure service and safety standards are met at all times. They will also be responsible for a number of health and safety checks (shared between the management team) such as fire extinguishers, pallet trucks and first aid checks. 

6 months ago I switched to managing nights which involves receiving deliveries and filling up the whole store. I have 9 staff to manage and on average we receive around 500 boxes per night as well as finish what is left of what is left from the morning delivery (averaging around 500 as well). A typical night for me would be starting at 9pm and having half an hour to read handovers left from other managers, print delivery sheets for each department, walk the store and stockroom to see what needs doing for the night and to verbally handover with the evening manager. During this time I will be letting my staff into the building as they are arriving to start at 9.30pm. At 9.30pm I use all the information I gathered to brief my team on the plan for the evening and one to receive the delivery and the others to begin working on their own departments. I will then make my way around the team to give them more specific briefings for each of their departments and give them some timescales to work to. As well as processing the delivery the team is expected to put away their overstock in the stockroom, bring out any necessary stock from the stockroom and keep it tidy. We are also responsible for placing any new lines which sometimes we do on initiative alone, others we are guided by the department manager's handover and others we will leave for the department manager to do if we can't place them ourselves. Throughout the night I regularly check on my staff's progress and give them feedback or new timescales. Like any other department manager I make time for formal reviews and meetings about conduct, attendance and performance. I also have to check our baler daily, our footstools and racking systems weekly and our ladders, cages, trolleys and pallets trucks monthly. Every morning I handover the store to the opening manager and walk them round the store so they can so the progress and what is left to do. I then leave messages to each department manager coming in for the day so they get a more specific picture for their own department. On Sunday mornings I am responsible for locking up the store as no manager is in early enough to meet me and on Sunday evening I have to open up the store as the other managers have left earlier that night.

I find the job itself to be very satisfying as it always keeps you busy and has a great blend of being physically, mentally and socially engaging. If you want a job you can coast in then I wouldn't recommend it. My favourite aspect is developing other people, I'm usually a very hands on person but I've found it's even more satisfying to be able to stand back and see somebody you taught do a better job than you could have! The company itself has a great model which keeps it secure, successful, driven by ethics and focusing more and more on developing and progressing people to keep up with it's expansion. This long term thinking is what the company strives for but it can be very challenging with what can feel like daily firefighting to keep up the level of service and standards required to keep it successful. Anyone in this role will be at the mercy of the quality of the seniors management in their particular store and how well they buy into the company's well set out view as well as their ability to keep calm under the pressure. I can say I have experienced this done both well and poorly within the company. I haven't worked for other retailers but from speaking to others who have it sounds like you get a lot more freedom to make decisions with Primark and to try things and share the results rather than having to follow an exact head office determined layout or routine. There is plenty of guidance and information available but if you have good ideas and can put them across well then you will be appreciated.

I worked as a floor assistant, and a typical day involved making sure that the shop floor is clean of products, and that the stands themselves are well organised. The job itself isn't too difficult, unless you're asked to move boxes and to change stands/fixtures. The difficult part was that you weren't really told what to do, especially when it came to something you never did before, for example taking care of the trending area of the store: I was told to place whatever "looked nice", even though I voiced my concern over not being the best at fashion. Additionally, while I mentioned an injury and it acknowledged, I wasn't offered much sympathy; but I guess that's expected in retail. Likewise, the air conditioner hasn't been fixed in years in our store and summers are very difficult; it isn't just us feeling the affect, but the customers complain to us very often, too.

The worst thing about working at Primark is the management. I required them to complete a form that my landlord's background agency required of me. While I can't possibly know what this third party was asking Primark, when I went in on a weekday to talk with the HR department and explain that it's very necessary that I get this reference (or else I will end up without a place to live in), they spent a significant amount of time shouting at me about how they don't care that I'll be left without a flat, and it's none of their business. However, surely one can argue, that it is their business: they are the HR department. If the lady there had said, "I'm sorry, I wish I could help, but this is the policy", or another similar in a professional manner, it would have stung less. But knowing that a company I've worked for almost 2 years doesn't care about my ability to do my job (I cannot really work if I don't have somewhere to live), actually hurt me. I left the HR department in tears, and really defeated.

Additionally, the HR and the managers walk around with their noses up in the air, getting in the way - in particular, in the small and narrow corridors of the stock room - and stare at us like we are small insects. Everyone that I talked to has said the same thing: the job itself isn't too bad, while it is repetitive and customers can be difficult, it is a manageable job and at times (thanks to wonderful staff) enjoyable. The issue is the management, that hasn't been replaced in years, and that perhaps could use some training.

Also when it comes to the training itself, I found that very lacking. While yes, it's not rocket science, the training involved watching boring videos and doing boring activities. Funnily, they did another training thing a month after hiring me - which was the same training videos they showed us during the induction. I can promise you, our memory isn't that bad. We even groaned at some parts, knowing what was coming up. They really should work on that, and offering the HR/management some training in compassion and humility.

I wouldn't suggest working for Primark as a career choice. The fact that they would have preferred that I end up without a flat, offer few opportunities for training (the many times I asked to be trained as customer service staff!), no incentives (I mean, 10% during Christmas which just came into practice recently? Surely Primark has sister companies and they can offer discounts etc in that area) and really awful management really puts you off. Sure, it's great for a student that needs extra money, but everyone I know that's a "lifer" absolutely hates working there. Many people I know have left, too, for better jobs.

Also the pay is pretty awful, too. And they don't offer references whatsoever, even when it comes to emergency situations! Plus, they're not very flexible with hours and they WILL hound you for overtime, which gets annoying fast when you have deadlines and other responsibilities - they will do it even in the comfort of the locker room.

For most people, this type of job considering the familiarity of this brand, especially for younger people, would seem like a dream come true. However, this is far from the truth. Despite the fact I only worked part-time on a weekend for 4 hours, I struggled to get myself motivated to actually attend work most days as I had grown an aversion to the place. The general area, despite cleaners was generally quite unclean and the age of this store was starting to show. Unlike most Primarks, this one hadn't been updated in the 18 years that it has been around which made it seem run down in comparison to newer stores like Meadowhall. It tended to smell bad and was very dusty underneath most stands and on occassion I have seen Silverfish crawling underneath clothing which was unhygenic and unpleasant. I would not be surprised if the hygiene standards of the store contributed to the multiple times I have been unwell. One of the only acknowledgeable positives were the people I had met during my time working there who were very friendly, chatty and inclusive regardless of your background. I would say I have made a few good friendships with some of my co-workers during my time at Primark, but that is where the positives end. However, I did find I had problems with the management as the majority of the time they walk around the store talking to one another rather than helping take care of the shop floor like you would have expected them to. Sometimes, they were very rude if you couldn't make it in for a day due to illness even if you had the courtesy to phone in a few hours earlier to give them a heads up. As someone with anxiety, it made me more and more anxious when it came to calling them up whenever I had a problem. Most of the time, you were expected to do the most degrading of jobs within a short shift and have it completed by the end of the day and sometimes you were even left on your own to either return clothing from the fitting rooms or recover garment stands on department, the state of both were usually very unpleasant (either teeming to the brim full or were reduced stands that were a complete unorganized mess). Returns in particular were very bad as the staff who were working on the shift before you barely did any, so you would come to work with large stands full and have your fingers and hands hurt afterwards from carrying so many clothes and you were expected to have these done by closing time which was basically impossible. Not only this but you were rarely ever trained properly to do your jobs which left you wondering if you were doing something right and I always felt constantly fearful that someone was going to scold me for doing the wrong thing. Although I will say that the pay was reasonable as it was far above minimum wage (which was not the case when I first started, I would have quit a long time ago if it was still around that pay area) and I do not have many complaints except extra hours were very difficult to pick up. As a student, working hours through the week are generally unwanted as I would like to fit in my personal studies as well as resting time from my stressful education. Most days left me too exhausted (even if it was only 4 hours of work) to even want to take more overtime as I found myself growing a bigger aversion to the place the more I worked there, therefore that was rarely ever an option. 

Overall, I wouldn't recommend Primark to anyone who is looking for a job in the long-term. For students in the short term, it is OK. However, you are very unlikely to progress further in your career and the opportunities are poor. There are plenty of other organizations who are likely to offer you better long-term employment options as well as a better management system, better working environment and also have a job you want to turn up to.

A typical day at Primark can be described in one word - hectic. It is a fast paced and stressful environment and it can be easy to become overwhelmed but I would recommend it to anyone as a first time job or anyone interested in retail. The average day of a retail assistant will start off with a 'staff huddle', in which the supervisor will give the team a run down of things going on in the store, such as percentage improvements on the previous week, things that need to be double checked, if a visit is happening etc and then staff members being given a task to do. Depending on your shift, this may change. For example, a staff member doing a 4 hour shift will usually be given one task to do for those 4 hours e.g work on the tills for 4 hours or work in a zone or department for 4 hours. A staff member doing an 8 hour shift will perhaps work on the tills for the first 3 hours of their shift, have a lunch break then return to the floor and continue the rest of their shift in a department or zone. Breaks are given to shifts above 4 hours.

During my time at Primark I have learned how to use tills, handle money, use equipment, practice work safety, how to communicate with customers and colleagues, work as a team.

Management is very good. I have always been able to talk to my managers freely and easily. 

Work place culture in Primark is very casual and friendly. Most of the staff can have a laugh with each other in the break room as well as on the floor as long as they are keeping up with their work. The environment is always very friendly and smiley. At least in my store it is like this. 

Pros of Primark are the pay is good compared to other retail jobs, at least this is the case in NI. There is a very strong union presence in Primark, I always felt I could go to the union if there were any problems and was always consulted by them on any work changes. It is a friendly staff environment. I have always felt comfortable chatting to managers, supervisors and other sales assistants. The training is very good, from the get go you are taught how to fold correctly, how to size clothing, present things in the shop, how to work the tills, how to do refunds and exchanges and how to interact with customers. There is also training in fire safety, equipment safety, equality training and online representation training. The breaks are incredibly fair.

Cons of Primark are that it can be a very stressful environment to work in. It is a very very busy atmosphere and almost every shift is incredibly fast paced, dealing with lots of customer queries and tasks. Some of these customers are very difficult - especially customers that have been refused a refund. Members of staff are often shouted at and belittled by angry customers so staff need to be prepared to not take it to heart and remain professional during those interactions. Supervisors and managers however are quick to ensure staff are okay and to reinforce company policies to difficult customers. 

Despite difficult customers, you also get some really lovely customers as well as regulars. I frequently aid regular customers every week in choosing outfits, giving them tips and info on our cosmetics line as well as being there to talk to them. Some of our customers really appreciate the socialisation and communication with staff members and its always lovely to make someones day a bit easier or better. 

I would definitely recommend Primark as a job. My advice would be to try to remain calm and composed in stressful situations, keep up to date with where products are on the shop floor and to communicate with your customer. Customers will usually appreciate someone serving them who is genuinely interested in what they're saying.

A typical day included arriving around 10 minutes before the start time, get clocked in and straight onto a till or department. After the store closed, everyone came together to put out the returns and clean up. 

As for many of the weekend workers, Primark was my first job. Being in a working environment with people your own age really made coming to work worth it, as you find your co workers soon become close friends and it was nice to come to work, have a good laugh while getting the job done, then head off to the pub later on. The weekend supervisors also try their best to organise days and meals out which includes all staff members and helps team building. 

However, I found that the overall management structure on the weekend is incomparable compared to the mid-week team. I found that some management adopted a 'teacher like' status- such as making workers ask to go to the toilet, questioning sickness calls and telling workers off for the smallest things such as communicating with other workers. I was once literally shouted at for asking for time off despite giving over 2 months notice. The evening team supervisor isn't the nicest person either, and will mock and talk down to you if you make even the smallest mistake. The other management, however, are really friendly, professional and down to earth, especially the store manager herself.

Primark is great for helping to build up your customer service skills, as well as initiative and time management. From the first day, you're taught to be customer service focused no matter what. It was nice to be able to meet new people every weekend, some from your local area, but others from all over the world. It's really weird to see how many tourists from America, Sweden and beyond actually came to my small town to experience Primark. I found that at times, Primark could be too customer focused, such as bending too many rules for the customers, like discounting for petty reasons, returning without the receipt all to calm hostile customers down. I also often found that us as assistants were not trusted to void or add items, so we had to call for someone higher to help as a big line built up.

In terms of company benefits. There really isn't many. The job is as no frills as the store itself, with only 10% off at Christmas or the occasional summer. Sunday and bank holiday work is paid the same as any other day. It would be nice to get more benefits, as the staff work so hard. Promotion is apparently hard to get too. But for a weekend job, no one really moans much about it.

From starting in 2016, I have seen a lot change. First of all is the increase of pay from £4.44 to £7.80 (as of Sep 2019) which is obviously the best part. Staff turn over has improved slightly. When i first started I noticed staff members would leave nearly every week for higher paid retail jobs in more respected companies, whereas now it isn't so bad. Primark have clearly started listening to its employees and has done it's best to put things right. But, recently more staff including myself are looking to leave because of the re structure planned for the following months. Overtime is now non existent, and when it is it's given to the same staff each week instead of on a first come first serve basis. Word of mouth says soon the whole operation is going to change and staff will be made to work harder whilst budgets are cut. 

Overall, if you're an inexperienced student wanting to earn a bit of cash on the weekends and looking to make great mates along the way, Primark is the perfect provider of that. But, if you are more experienced, look elsewhere and you will definitely find something better. The company is a job provider, not a career.

The work is very simple and is a busy environment.
I was praised for my hard work and managers were happy with my work, which was nice to be appreciated.
However i would never recommend anyone to work there as i was disrespected and bullied.
The management and some of senior members are real bullies they were name calling, making nasty comments and basically treat you like a slave.
I will never understand why they do that especially when u work hard. Its stupidity and primark needs to sort it out how they operate otherwise they will have to get use to staff leaving every other month.
I would advise anyone not to bother, if you have no choice then leave as soon as you get another job.
I left because i have self respect and did not appreciate going into work everyday listening to name calling and being disrespected. Also dealing with stupidity because thats what primark is.
Yes the job is simple, but not the greatest job but was a job and i appreciate the fact i was working there, but it was the attitude and behaviour of management and supervisors, that made me leave.
You have some talking behind your back and then being nice on your face especially when they ask you to do overtime. They pressure you to do overtime and if you dont they treat you even worse by puting more pressure on you. They were like snakes hissing around and you knew they behind you or watching you, when you hear silly immature comments and name calling, but they pretend they talking about something or about someome elsa but was showing that they talking about you. Was this their stupidity skills in one way to make u work even more harder and pressure u to do overtime..?
Oh if you ill comments will be made and basically whatever u do they will comment. 
I just dont understand why, theres no need for it, you work hard you do your job you get the tasks done but its just not good enough and they will give you more work and still treat you like a dog.

The stress levels just raised everyday and you left feeling really down.
Its like one big show where there nice as pie to customers but behind the scenes the staff are undermined and bullied.

If you want to work for a company that expects you to work like a robot, deal with continuous disregard from customers and be treated like a child by a bunch of managers who would struggle to organise anorgy in a brothel then you've found the perfect job for you.
A retail operative position in Primark has around about a 3 month 'honeymoon' period where you think 'hey this isn't too bad! it's fairly easy work the pay's not horrendous and if I want to come in looking horrifically hungover I can! How fab!' But trust me when I say that this soon wears off! Yes you can get away with being hungover in work, mainly because the managers are feeling too rough themselves to pull you up on it. However the easy tasks quickly become pretty menial and repetitive, and I can assure you there's only so many times a customer can unfold a t-shirt they've literally just watched you fold before you're ready to kill every customer in the shop! (and I'm personally not an angry or violent person!)
Back to the management (or lack of!) In my store we had about 6 or 7 managers on each floor, so you'd think the place would be pretty organised right? Wrong! The AMs (floor managers) are generally a breed of evil aliens (with the odd exception) that all other managers are scared of. The floor managers expect every member of staff to be able to work a 10 hour shift without uttering a single word to another member of staff and if you dare do you be prepared to get the death stare for a good 5 minutes solid! They have the same effect on all the other managers which means all other managers are just as cruel to the retail operatives so they don't end up at the receiving end of the AMs wrath! There is also a distinct lack of communication and cooperation between all the managers meaning that you are often asked to do 6 different tasks within the space of 3 minutes guaranteeing you will be in trouble with at least one manager for not doing what they've asked!
Working for a fashion store, requiring a uniform consisting of a black blouse and skirt or trousers you'd expect a small uniform allowance, seems pretty reasonable. Ohhhh no you can forget about that! And staff discount? Don't make management laugh, unless you class the 10% you get off for an entire 2 weeks before Christmas!
Ohhhh Christmas! Let me tell you about Christmas! If you've ever been into a Primark store in December you'll probably be able to imagine how stressful it is working there! And I'm convinced more people go shopping with prams in December! Why anyone would go shopping on the busiest day of the week / year with a pram will always baffle me especially when all the do it walk around complaining about the fact it's so busy and that they have a pram with a screaming child in it!
But I suppose for pretty reasonable pay it's a good opportunity for your first job just don't expect to enjoy for much more than a few weeks. If you're that desperate for a job use Primark for experience but look for another job pretty soon unless you want to dread ever working in retail again!

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
My experience working at Primark was disappointing overall. When I first joined, I didn’t feel particularly welcomed and there was a lack of support during my onboarding, including delays in receiving my uniform.

As a student, I found it difficult to manage my availability alongside work. Despite explaining my course commitments and exam periods, I felt there was little flexibility or understanding around my schedule, especially during busy periods like December when holiday requests were not approved. However they’ll use have you a holiday during in services such as Christmas Day and new years.

There also seemed to be inconsistency in how availability and requests were handled between staff members. Some colleagues appeared to have more flexibility with their schedules than others, which made the experience feel unfair at times.

Overall, I experienced a lack of support during a period where balancing work and education was already challenging. This affected my wellbeing and made it difficult to continue in the role.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
