The Hut Group

I worked for THG for four years. Through the pandemic they allowed me to stay working from home due to my bad anxiety. I worked from home for 3 years, with no issues, at least not until they made it one. One day they rang me to say I would have to come back to the office, despite me going through stressful meetings and procedures to put in place a permanent wfh contract for me. They made me go through all this again, only to tell me that I was unsuccessful and would have to come back to the office within a weeks notice. They didn't care about the impact it would have on my mental health, and didn't take into consideration the fact that I have been working from home with absolutely no issues for years. I was forced to quit due to them making my job unsuitable for me. 

Moreover, the office is a horrific environment. The managers treat you like children, and in order to progress it is an absolute popularity contest. If you're willing to climb a social ladder, perhaps you will get a team leader job and then progress onto manchester, but if not? you will be shackled to the floor of gadbrook park for the rest of your life. I was there for four years, only of the highest performers in stats and quality, and I never got anything for it. When I realised this I stopped trying so hard, my stats and quality went down, and guess what, they didn't notice that either. 

There is no work-life balance. They want you there at 8am and leave at 5pm. They want you to work weekends too. With an ever so generous 30 minutes break. This job made me want to end myself when I was in this office environment. I wouldn't advise it to my worst enemy. They do not care about their staff, you are just a number in a seat to them. 

When I left, after four years, I didn't even get a goodbye. No good luck. No farewell. Absolutely nothing. They are disgusting. 

After a long time working for The Hut Group as a security manager I need to express how terrible the place is. 
Senior management: The management throughout the company is shocking due to many very immature people being promoted too soon, because it is a "cool" thing for a company to do. This is a general problem that the Hut Group is facing but it is worse when working in security due to the attitude of the senior staff. The group head of security is the best example of this. It seems he was lucky to get the role because his senior employed him because they worked together in the military (jobs for the boys) which shows how corrupt even the security team is. He seeks to further his own career by stepping on others which is common at the Hut by both us management staff and below.
Culture: Bullying is a serious problem here at the Hut and is the reason that I am leaving. Seeing people get spoken to like naughty children or ignored because they are actually good at their job and actually show up their lazy seniors is a poor company attribute. The expectancy to work 12-15 hour days 5 days a week means that your salary is under industry norms. The so called unicorn company relies on behind big investments that allow it to hide its poor performance. Buy buy buy and fake it until they make it is the unofficial motto here. 
To sum it up, I would not take another role at the Hut and would advise anyone considering it to avoid it unless you are desperate for work. Definitely avoid any security roles and don't be surprised to have your enthusiasm sucked dry by the two faced senior management if you do take a role.

I enjoyed my time at The Hut, the culture seemed enlightened, the training thorough and things were professional and supportive.  As an older person returning to work, or facing career and social oblivion I liked being around the young professionals.  The atmosphere is a bit like a University. They are a well educated, intelligent and very hard working bunch.  I loved the job but I was let go because there was no way I could consistently do 13 customer resolutions per hour including phone calls; I could do about 8.  Eventually your realize it's all about speed, like a factory. They downplay this at first.  You are monitored, measured and reported on publicly, continuously.  If you are a perfectionist and like to focus on quality and human relations and don't feel comfortable running a marathon as if its a sprint its not for you.  A key phrase I remember a team leader saying was 'like football, touch and go' in other words constant forward motion, never stop to think or observe.  I knew this was coming as I'd sampled the delights of CS before but was glad I had a good six months there anyway.  To be honest though, being let go for under performance when everyone else could do it has left me feeling rejected and lower grade.  I worked as hard as I could in a sustainable way and pleased a lot of customers.  I'll never see my friends there again.  I soldier on.  What goes around ....

PS - this review is automatically censored based on the use of certain words.  It doesn't allow the word beginning with S meaning 'let go' or a word beginning with R meaning 'mentally challenged' which is how I wanted to say it made me feel.

This place is simply an awful place to work, run by bullies and liars. DO NOT be sold to by the recruitment director who will basically miss sell to you and then drop you like a stone literally a day or two after you've joined. The working conditions are awful too, you struggle to even get a decent chair and there is no parking and there are no meeting rooms The culture is shocking, literally shocking. They actively seek Oxford and Cambridge graduates for prestige purposes but these graduates are given no training and then often put into line management positions which exacerbates the cultural problems. There is no training or investment in the individual and the place is run by accountants who are so focused on cashflow, that they never pay suppliers on time so you can never build up meaningful supplier relationships. DO NOT be sold to with the flimsy share options and promise of quarterly bonus too. You will be sold the dream and sorely disappointed. The staff turnover is massive too, the highest rate I have experienced in my working life. You will be expected to work ridiculous hours and to respond to e-mails at the weekend. No words can describe how bad this place is, it should be subject to an investigation. Please note, also, they post many fake reviews and staff are encouraged to do this. I was asked to do so but refused so be very careful in believing all the 5 star reviews that appear on here and sites like Glassdoor.

I was hired as a fixed term seasonal temp in October 2024. I enjoyed the role, and thought the level of training was really good given in the first 2 weeks. Staff members on the training team were really helpful and approachable. 

When I started in my team, I was placed in a seat that was far away from the specific team I was on. This meant I could not really speak to anyone on my team and often spent hours without communication. 

I asked a few times if there were opportunities to be kept on after the initial 3 month period, to which I was not given a definitive answer however, was told it is usually the case. 

I found the team to be quite cliquey, and the managers not very approachable if you needed help. The w/c 9 December, a few of my colleagues who had started at a similar time as me were taken one by one into a ‘meeting’ where they were told contract were getting short. On the 16th Dec, I was told I still had 2 holidays to take and assumed my role was safe. However on 17th dec, I was taken into a meeting and told very briefly and with an ambiguous reason that I was no longer needed, with my last day to be Christmas Eve. 

I really liked working at thg and was quite sad that this came out of the blue. I believe that they did not let any of the apprentices go, as they are on a lower wage than a standard customer service advisor. 

Started working on a 3 month FTC during the Corona Virus pandemic. Working as a warehouse operative packing orders. The job itself was not particularly challenging just very boring. There were plenty of issues with some listed below...

• All personal items including phones, watches and jewellery (except wedding bands) must be stored in a locker or not brought to site. 

• Time management is particularly tricky with very few clocks, especially when trying to monitor packaging target performance and break start times/ shift end times

• The staff are 90% foreign which isnt a problem as most are very friendly and helpful. However the same cannot be said for the management team. There are one or two that are friendly and helpful, however the rest are very rude and condescending. 

• On multiple occasions we experienced high temperatures due to the beginning of summer. With temperatures inside the warehouse being usually at least 4 or 5 degrees higher than outside, on multiple occasions it reached 30 degrees and with no air conditioning and very little ventilation it was unbearable

• Equipment issues on a regular basis - Everyday at least one peice of equipment would go wrong. 
Nearly all the time there was also a shortage of work / work stations due to poor staff management. This made it increasingly difficult to achieve packaging targets.

I quit this job after about 6 weeks as it became unbearable.

Management are incompetent in their own positions and are disrespectful to their subordinates. Revenue is all that matters, at the expense of employee mental health. They hire fresh graduates and expect them to fulfil their role without giving them any training, they just pretend that they have hired someone that already has experience. 

The company's bad reputation leads to poor management because they are forced to select management in one of do two ways:
1. promote 22-23 year olds from within that have been at the company since they were 21. These inevitably turn out to have garbage management and people skills.
2. hire underqualified people that are attracted by a larger salary. My manager should have been about two positions below his actual position considering his level of expertise and people skills. 
No intelligent person with experience would choose to work here if they have the option to choose a different company to work for. 


They draw you in as a grad with a great starting salary as that's what you'll be on for the whole time you are there...

I was there two years and had 3 promotions, and one pay rise for £2.5k because I had to prove myself to get my next pay rise (even though I apparently had proven myself to get two promotions before said pay rise and manage a team of 4 people...).

Overall it's just badly run, the CEO doesn't care about the employees he cares about the bottom line and if there is ever a case where the bottom line is going to fall below expectations then pay rises don't go through and lo and behold, there will be a pay freeze and a recruitment freeze even though one person will be doing the job of 5.

Great way to get experience as you will be a part of so much and learn all the work on the job, but not good for your mental health and well being (two CEOs recently left due to these reasons so if you don't believe me then at least look at these facts!!).

I had the unfortunate experience of working in the Northwich office as a Graduate service desk analyst. In reality I was thrown into a situation where training was non-existant and any mistakes were punishable. Eventually after hours of over time, flexibility and educating myself ooh, they had the audacity to extend my probation for another 6 months. Obviously I quit the following week. 

I didn't mention that my manager had no experience in IT but was friends with fellow managers which substituted any experience needed. 

There are many clicks and if you were not recruited by a friend, you do not stand a chance in any promotion or pay rises. They will remove you within a year.

The company is only ever just about holding itself up. Staff turnover it extremely high and their owners slander any ex employees calling them lazy. Do some basic google searches and you will see what I mean. 

There is a reason they barely do business in the UK and he majority of brands are based abroad.

I worked at the hut group as a Christmas temp, employee from December to January. 
Like the rest of the temps, I was given an initial 3 month contract, which actually lasted 6 weeks. 
By the end of January there were 3 people left on my team, despite us  starting in December with a team of over 30. 
They will end your contract suddenly and make you use your annual leave to serve your weeks notice period. 
I hit the daily & hourly targets, and always tried to go above and beyond giving a good customer experience. 
The targets are to hit 15 cases an hour, some cases can take 1 minute, some can take 10 and it is hit and miss what you will receive, so if you receive 6 x 10 minute cases within an hour you will be massively behind target and ‘told off’ by your team leader. 
If you don’t want to be mismanaged, heavily targeted and monitored constantly then I would steer clear of the hut group.
