Working at a TK Maxx store can be overwhelming at first if you have no experience in fast fashion retail. There is a lot of manual work, bending and lifting, you can be called to the tills at any time, then return to your department, then help others on other departments, basically there is no idle time for you. Which is good from a business perspective but can be very tiring and some people just can't cope with the demand. You'll do 342854 different things all at the same time.

Sadly, customers will treat you badly. You'll have to put up with non-stop arguments (especially at the tills), I had one where a customer spat at me and others because I refused to give a discount on a £2 pair of socks. This example might be on the extreme end, but be prepared that a lot of customers will think that you are just a vending machine. In the other hand, TK Maxx serves customers on a conveyor belt, which might explain this behaviour from them.

The shifts can be adjusted to your needs if you talk to your manager. Early shifts are the quieter ones and typically offer shorter hours. This is better for people who like to mind their own business as the store isn't very busy, do the job (mainly refilling shelves and rails) and then go home. Late shifts start from around noon and are a lot more busier. You won't do refilling, but maintaining your department (picking up things from the floor and put them back on the shelves) and serving at the tills when required by the manager. Afternoon shifts have an 'open end'. It might say on the rota that you finish at 8 o'clock, but in reality you won't be out of the store before at least an hour after that. Around peak times (Christmas, Easter etc) I regularly did an extra 2-3 hours every day on top of my scheduled times.

This brings us to the salary, which is quite decent compared to other retailers. Early shifts will pay you a reasonable part time income. Late shifts will add more to that and if you work really hard (stay longer when they need you), you can pocket quite some money there. At times I earned £1500 after tax, which is not bad for a retail job. Some colleagues, who volunteer for 'twilight shifts' (very late finish at or after midnight) or even night shifts can take about £2000 home. However, calculating your next paycheck is very confusing due to the funny contracts they offer. Part of your salary is the normal, contracted hours, every month (or 4 weeks, I can't remember), the other part is the overtime you do, BUT this is calculated on a totally different time schedule. You'll get your overtime pay weeks after you actually did the work. Also, these two don't simply overlap, but the overtime schedule changes every month. I have to give them though, that I always got paid in time and fairly, there was no messing around my wages.

You can become a team leader and then deputy manager fairly simply to be honest, as long as you dedicate some time to the job. If you are always available for the extra jobs, work outside your normal hours and just crack on with the things (it won't get any better, so why not just do it without moaning), you can go on a training within the company. Sadly they changed the pay for new team leaders, it's not very appealing anymore.

The main reason I left is because I used to work in the afternoon shifts and it just turned my life/work balance upside down, I had no time to do absolutely anything during the week, but working/sleeping, didn't have a chance to watch a movie in one go. Changing to a lower paid early shift wasn't an option and the new team leader salaries they offer don't justify the amount of work I'd had to put in.

TL;DR: I'd still recommend to work for this company, both the colleagues and managers are a friendly bunch of people to work with, the pay is above the retail average, you can work your backside off if you want and can easily progress on the career ladder.

I was all the time impressed by the new concepts that the company is trying to bring into the workplace as diversity and inclusion, cultural factors, supportive and inclusive workplace wellbeing of employee etcetera. However, is just a curtain in my opinion to show other companies or customers that they are the best. Fair enough though, because this is all about marketing strategies, RIGHT? Unfortunately,  as a previous Associate to one of your sites I had the worst experience when I was in need. Treated bad by the SOM and Line management. No one believed me because people there are complaining all the time because no one is open to speak with them or listen or treat them as human beings. So, people is looking for ways to find good, to help themselves alone not with help from colleagues or management because there will not be any help, just words, lies and promises. People are brainwashed and they don't have that much support (on that site) as you as a company try to show on social media or god knows what others ways you use. When the company says, we are a big family, THE TJX FAMILY, they are really referring to a family as you don't have any opportunities to grow when you have good skills and you are smart but is different when you are someone else's wife or brother or best friend OR simply you are blind, with no opinion and no power to keep your idea up. However, when you have new ideas to help, to work or to make your job easier they will say it is not allowed to do it that way. You just need to follow their rules because are better but just for the financial part not for the people. You have from time to time the opportunity to say something to someone hire who is coming to visit and ask if all is good, but you are afraid because you don't know what's happening next to you when they will go OR you never know who you taking with, you cannot trust people, this is what they are actually involuntary teaching you in time because guess what, no help and understanding from them. You will remain there and the management will look for revenge and ask you to do the worst job, treat you as a nothing, still if you know how to handle bigger/important things. Because there is all about jungle rule, run or by miserable, because if you fight, you lose and if you fight and win, no worries it is just a cover for some time, to give you the idea that you are important. However, the things will be worst after, so, kepp your mouth shut keep earn your money and be unhappy to your workplace or outside. You can earn good because they are looking for their people and are offering bonuses. Sometimes,  the management will say, "I am paying you bonuses to do this" like they are paying from their pockets. I am more happier now, in a new company that cares about humans; maybe you  can have a look at yourself as a company and to study some employee psychology and improve this or implement this, because looks like is missing. I know a lot of current and previous employees from TJX that will agree with the above words. Hope that this problems are not on all sites and just where I worked. Hope that stores staff is treated better, but actually they look very sad. Hopefully the things are looking better now on that site, but I don't think so. Wish you nice numbers this year as well. This is all you are good at and we are also numbers from you. P.S TOXIC PLACE, TOXIC PEOPLE,  FALSE ADVERTS. All is covered with a nice, fancy and expensive gold label curtain.

One thing, it's a good way to keep fit, management do not want to see anyone wandering around, many staff were fired after their probationary period because they weren't walking fast enough compared to other staff (which is fine, when it get's busy you need a fast pace as you may find you are the only person in your department and you have to be able to handle that). 

On to the review:
Associates are mostly always great to get along with, they usually have a common cause, the hatred of management. I've made many great friends whilst working here. However, TK maxx as a company need to find a way to sort out the management-to-employee relationship. Most of them treat staff with no respect whatsoever, and I've heard this from many employees and former employees from other stores that pop in and have a shop. TK Maxx state that they want to train people to become team leaders, perhaps it is my store, but that is simply not the case. Many staff members who are hungry to be trained to be team leader are constantly overlooked and the store manager has actually hired someone from a totally different job, and is training to become team leader in TK Maxx having never worked here before. I've had great managers that have moved later on to other stores, but they are far and few between.

The rotas are changed every week, Some associates hours change on a weekly basis so you can't really plan anything past a week and be certain there won't be a clash. Especially if you are trained in all aspects, be it delivery, maintenance in the different departments, fitting room, you just don't know where you will end up (which can keep you on your toes and refreshed in all departments). 

The contracted hours are kept low, so that management can cut hours on a whim, and me and other staff members have been threatened by management saying if they don't do something (e.g. stay to cover someone that has called in sick), they will have their hours cut. 

Staff discount is only 10%, occasionally they bump it up to 20% for a weekend on a special event. 

The most enjoyable part of the job is the associates are great to get along with, but to be honest that is the only thing for me, and is a reason why I give it 2 stars rather than 1. Oh, and it has been good at keeping my weight low, all that rushing about can be quite good cardio :)

a typical day at work for me would have been busy but filled with lots of new tasks which i pick up new tips on how to deal with certain situations. 
i would arrive 5-10 minutes early so i could check the rota and get myself ready. 
in the fitting rooms i would be required to check that they were clean and tidy for the customers, check all items of clothing that was returned was labelled correctly and check for damage. it was also important that if a customer wasn't happy with an item that i offered them help and advice in anything else that they required to ensure that they left happy (customer satisfaction). i would also need to order the rails in a way that the other sales associates could put them back on the shop floor quickly and easily.
at the tills i needed to be polite and ready to help anyone that needed assistance. it was also important to check that there were no scams and that the correct price  was being payed for the items. 
another role would be to keep the shop floor tidy and free from anything that could cause a trip hazard to others around. big displays are important to keep tidy and presentable as these are the first things that catch the eye of a customer as they walk through the doors and gave the first impression.
i have learnt that if you are in a siutation you know you cant sort out its important to get another member of management to prevent any upset to the customer. be polite, friendly and happy to help at all times as this is what the customers remember, its all about what the customer wants and needs. 
My co workers were friendly and always happy to help out if a ever had a question or problem, i didnt feel there was any tension between any of us which made working so much easier. 
the hardest part of the job was explaining something to a customer who asked a question but then didnt want to listen. however there was never any problems when i found myself in these situations as i remained calm and polite. 
the most enjoyable part of the job was talking to the customers and when the found an item that they where really pleased with sharing in their happiness. you got to deal with lots of different characters which i also found interesting.

I really enjoyed my time working for tk maxx it was fantastic I was a sales associate on a Christmas temp contract which got extended until the end of January. A typical day at work for me was usually a 4 hour shift or 6 hour shift or even sometimes a 9 hour shift it depended on how busy it was. I was usually either working on a till during busy periods such as weekends. I would mainly work on a fitting room which got a little boring at times when it was quiet but overall I enjoyed it and sometimes I would be on maintenance which was working on tidying up the shop floor and making it presentable for customers. Whilst I was there I learnt a lot of things such as working on a fitting room, learning to do returns on a till and how to create features and displays even though I wasn't fantastic at them! The management team were fantastic, they were really helpful when us temps didn't know what to do and when we all finished we all got a thankyou card and a gift card from the management team to thank us for all of our hard work which I thought was really nice and it showed me that I was well appreciated. The co-workers were fantastic! a lot of staff members think oh no the temps are in everything is going to go wrong but not here they didn't every single one of them helped us out when we needed it without a fuss. They kept telling us that you can move up in the company within time if you get kept on and there's a high chance of getting to come back permanently which I hope will definitely happen! The staff were there for you when you needed them and they were very friendly people to spend time with you felt part of the team the minute you walked in. The hardest part of the job was having to leave! I was very sad to have had to go but I understand that January is a very tight month after the Christmas period but I was thankful that I got kept on while the end of January even if they had to tell me that my contract had to end when it was my birthday and the most enjoyable part of the job was all of it I can't pick out any faults.

A typical day at work would consist of not being briefed upon arrival, which one would argue is necessary in order to begin a shift, then a series of instructions on tasks that need completing which are received by multiple members of the management team in a disorderly fashion whereby no single instruction or objective corresponds with that of another member of management. This is a consistent issue in the everyday workplace at this company, and causes confusion and distress among associates on the shop floor as there is uncertainty on where associates are stationed, what tasks need completing and what deadlines are to be met. Furthermore, there has been much dispute between the management and the associates regarding hours (availability). It would seem that some members of management do not comply with the availability of many associates and disregard any reasonable requests for days off, shift swaps or less/more hours. An example of this is when an associate's request for a minor amendment to their availability was verbally accepted by members of management, but then not put into practice in the follow-up, despite being asked persistently and to consider their circumstances. On top of that, the job itself is repetitive, dull and tedious, while the working environment is tense and irritable. Overall, there is a lack of basic communication between the management which, in turn, creates misunderstandings and hence strained relationships in the workplace. There is not a great deal of respect for much of the management coming from an associate's viewpoint and there is a collective distaste from the associates concerning various unacceptable actions, behavior and approaches of some of the superior members of management.

I have mixed feelings, a part of me wants to say yes this is fab, I love it and another is like just tell the truth. I want to talk about training, you get it but it’s not all that it. Yes watching training videos and doing a quiz is one way to learn but I just felt it was more watching and that’s it. Getting the information to work on the phone was kinda slow so you just waiting for the internet to work and then you get behind and then they say do it on your own time. But I really shouldn’t as you should do the work in work hours not when you clock out. When getting to the practical, I just felt it was rushed. You just get dumped with another employee and watch them do their job and have a go which is fine but they expect you to know everything by the week. It’s not just tills, it’s fitting room, maintenance and not to be rude but expecting you to know all different departments is ridiculous. And one thing is silly is that the constant price checks you have to do is beyond a joke like who prices these things, you’re literally walking around like a headless chicken looking for the product or finding an alternative to use as a price. Don’t know if this is just a colne thing or tk maxx in general but sort the pricing as it’s hard when you on the tills, no help and you have to leave the tills and then find a product and get back then to find a massive que waiting. I just feel they expect you to do everything when they should be more support as you’re not really supposed to leave the tills area. And finally there are some nice staff who are kind but there are some that make you dread coming in. There are favourites that the higher ups like and nepotism. Also be prepare for gossip, one time I said something and for some reason other staff knew about it. I’m giving it a 2 stars due to some nice staff as it’s not fair but otherwise it would have been a 1 star overall.

The pay is really good and you’re always busy ( good or bad for some ) but it makes the day go really fast, your days do vary depending on which management is in and how well you get on with the management. If they see that you are a hard worker you’re going to have a good time at work just make sure to be polite and respectful at all times and you’ll get it back, even if it takes a while - I think this can be difficult for older staff because sometimes the management is younger than them but you still have to see them as the ‘authoritive figure’ if you will. I’ve met some incredible people while working here, I think it is what you make it you need to make the best of each day. This  job has taught me so much I wouldn’t change working for TK maxx for a second you will experience the worst customers and the busiest days, I advise all new staff to spend the first few months Learning how to do all the tasks efficiently because it will make your day 100x easier and you’ll be valued a lot more. As a company itself I think they need to take on more staff of different ages but I can see why younger people are more likely to apply and get further. It is a tough job and you will be tired a lot but you just have to stay positive. The ‘ wow ‘ feedback system is really benefitial because it means we do get some sort of reward for our hard work but sometimes the paper isn’t put up with the feedback we’ve gotten so I don’t know what’s been said I just know someone’s said something good. Last but not least once you’ve worked at TK max you can work for any retail company and the skills are transferable.

You will be sworn and shouted out by other staff members who will then deny this and despite them being the instigator and you walking away from this hostile situation you will be painted as the aggressor. The system of jets required for you to do your job constantly breaks down so you cannot hang the items you are paid to do. When you report this it is often ignored,  and on a day when the system broke down for the majority of the shift (over 6 hours) you will get a member of higher management accusing you of not working as you haven't reported the jet system as being down when you have and the people you are meant to report this to are well aware of this but throw you under the bus to save their own skin. At your station you will either have jets to do the work or work and no jets ,a situation the management are aware of but don't care about apart from when you have not hit your target then it becomes your fault. Get told to do things an alternative way by one member of management then spoke down to by another for doing this as they don't agree with it. Of course,  again it is your fault for following orders. Get told if there are no jets find another station but then get told off for doing this. You really cannot win working here and I can't wait to leave. Their system of clocking in and booking holidays does not work.  I have been here nearly three months and still cannot access my wage slips, book holidays etc and have told IT and my line manager weekly and they are totally uninterested in resolving it.

Having worked overseas for TJX I thought as a whole the company would be similar. I was so wrong. 
It’s the management of the store that sets the president for how you will enjoy working at the store. Abroad, my manager was amazing and a people person. Treated everyone equally and as long as the job was done the staff were able to use their own initiative and the store was well run sufficiently. They were also more flexible with working hours and set shift hours as long as you could be flexible for extra shifts.
In England it’s target driven and I couldn’t believe you could be called into a disciplinary meeting for not finding 5 targets a week for things like ticket switches, attempted theft and incorrect pricing. 
You had to be incredibly flexible and give your life away to be ready to work any hours and any days. There was no advance notice other than week to week for shifts so you never had a work life balance and hours were dictated for your life to work around. 
Staff who had worked there for years and trained in team leader roles never seemed to progress further and this was most definitely due to the manager pulling the strings for progression. Outsiders instantly took the higher level roles rather than those with experience within the company already. 
I enjoyed the fast paced work and the different brands that came in daily and my role in my previous job abroad but due to the way the store manager was here In England, it changed my opinion completely. The company is nice but the management dictates if your face fits and you are willing to give you life away to live to work. Not a great place for people to work who have kids.
