The University of Nottingham is a public research university in Nottingham, United Kingdom. It was founded as University College Nottingham in 1881, and was granted a Royal Charter in 1948.
Nottingham's main campus (University Park) and teaching hospital (Queen's Medical Centre) are on the outskirts of the City of Nottingham, with a number of smaller campuses and sites elsewhere in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Outside the United Kingdom, the university has campuses in Semenyih, Malaysia and Ningbo, China. Nottingham is organised into five constituent faculties, within which there are more than 50 schools, departments, institutes and research centres. Nottingham has about 44,000 students and 9,000 staff, and had an income of £635 million in 2015/16, of which £124.6 million was from research grants and contracts.[1]
The 2017 High Fliers survey stated Nottingham was the seventh most targeted university by the UK's top employers between 2016-17.[6] In 2012, Nottingham was ranked 13th in the world in terms of the number of alumni listed among CEOs of the Fortune Global 500.[7] It is also ranked 2nd (joint with Oxford) in the 2012 Summer Olympics table of British medal winners.[8] Moreover, in 2015, Nottingham was listed as the 9th largest European producer of entrepreneurs, according to a private report.[9] In the 2011 and 2014 GreenMetric World University Rankings, University Park was ranked as the world's most sustainable campus.[10][11] The institution's alumni have been awarded a variety of prestigious accolades, including 3 Nobel Prizes, a Turner Prize, and a Gabor Medal and Prize.

I worked University of Nottingham for eight months and was very surprised with how included I felt as part of the team - with some parts of the team - not everybody was talkative. A typical day was go to work, sign in, get your keys to get on with the job and sign out and take the keys back when the working hours were up. The hardest part of the job for me was getting to work due to using public transport at very early hours of the morning and suffering from home life issues.

From my experience, I learned that I can work to very high standards of cleaning as well as feeling a part of an important company. Work/Life Balance was difficult for me. After suffering with a medical condition for a few years made this difficult due to the early hours. Tried to adjust hours but this was not operationally possible leading to me leaving later last year.

Salary was good, above minimum wage and the benefits received were also a life saver - e.g. bus travel and cycle to work schemes. This helped me a lot at the time with my financial needs back then.

Training is provided in most roles, they are open to applications from all people regardless of race, backgorunds etc. due to being an 'Equal opportunities employer'. I attended three training programmes which were required for the role - they also often offered training in gaining qualifications centred around the certain work area. 

Overall, a good company to work for just make sure that your health is in check, you attend every day, you do things properly and make sure you enjoy your time there. Enjoyed most of my time there just wish I could go back again with suitable hours for me to prove myself.

The university prides itself on inclusion of staff members with disabilities but management are not equipped to support you with their lack of knowledge and patience. 

You’re expected to work long hours where there is no work to life balance. You will have to make sacrifices in your personal life (your hobbies won’t exist anymore) and you’re not rewarded for the hard work you put in. 

Everything is about who is the most “popular” and everyone is extremely political. Management aren’t supportive and are barely around so staff take it upon themselves to take charge which causes conflict amongst them. 

If you are brave enough to speak out about the problems, you will get punished for it to the point where it would be classed as victimisation. They will try and push you out of the job by being passive aggressive, harsh, verbally abusive, which knocks your confidence in your ability to do your job. 

Even students have passed on messages about how they will not return to the department for work experience due to management. It’s extremely sad hearing that the universities own students who are paying for a positive environment to learn are having the same issues. 

This isn’t a reflection on the whole university as I have met other members of staff from different departments who are amazing and extremely supportive. Unfortunately, the department I work in isn’t one of them. 

A typical day at work consisted of a 9 am start most days, however because of university studies I had the opportunity to inform my employer of the days I could work and could not work in advance. In terms of progression, I learnt how to effectively use a spreadsheet, attention to detail and developed my concentration levels. I also had access to sensitive material whilst working as a data entry clerk such as a students' passport photograph, visa application and University Approval forms.

The management hierarchy where I was stationed was relaxed yet controlled as each member had a certain role to play in order to ensure the Project was completed on time and within budget. In terms of work culture the staff were friendly, easy to get along with which made my time working here more pleasurable and I also developed my social skills as well as the task at hand. 

The hardest part of the job was not to break your concentration and be distracted. To overcome this I was allowed to relocate to another office within the building to get the job done quickly, yet efficiently. On the contrary, the most enjoyable part of the job was the atmosphere, the people and knowing that you are part of a fundamental university project being a valuable asset in their progression.

A typical day at work wasn't too bad but was a very fast and hardworking environment. I learned a variety of things such as how to do everything I needed to do at a very fast pace, how to satisfy customers to the satisfaction they want and how to become a better communicator. The management there was decent, but when it came to them calling you in for work, it really wasn't good at all. When wanting employees to come in, they're very unorganized and don't communicate with you enough. The co-workers all seemed very nice, but also don't communicate with you very much at all. This made me feel very uncomfortable whilst working there, when I needed help I couldn't bring myself to ask any of them for it as none of them seemed very interested. The hardest part of the job was knowing everything you needed to do, the management and the co-workers leave you standing around a lot of the time as they're all too bothered in having a chat with each other or they're just rushing around doing what they have to do which is acceptable but you never know whether you're meant to be doing anything at that particular time. I cant really say I had any enjoyable parts within this job.

I have completed a BSc and PhD at The University of Nottingham. I am currently working as a Research Technician in the School of Biology on a project : Screening the yeast deletion collection against the MMV Malaria Box. This job involves using yeast deletion strain collection for high throughput screening of antimalarial drugs against gene function. My duties as a research technician involve the inoculation, culturing and screening of the yeast deletion collection mutants against the MMV Malaria Box. I have made use of high throughput assays to quantify growth of each mutant of the yeast gene-deletant collection in the absence or presence of these antimalarial compounds which requires the use of the State of Art Singer RoToR Robot. A large part of my job also involves data analysis using Excel and the ScreenMill software to evaluate the growth of the yeast mutants screened on the various drugs.
I have very supportive co-workers and I do look forward to going to work everyday.

My job as a Data collection officer at the Kings Meadow Campus at the University of Nottingham begins with me making a hot cup of coffee, turning on my computer and starting to put data entries onto the Romeo software. It is mostly a clerical work but thoroughly enjoyable because the bigger impact behind this job is so significant. Also, being a scientist myself, I understand the implications of having one's paper published but having to sell copyright to the publisher. This post deals with breaking this format of publishing papers through journals and having to pay to view the research output. 
It is a quiet but cosy office with 4 other members of staff. the highlight oif the week is the Friday afternoons where somebody (each one takes turn) brings some cake and we enjoy a hot cup of tea together. I cannot imagine a better end to the week. the support at the job is really good, with frequent visits from the manager who inquires about my job satisfaction.

My day was based in the City Hospital with recruitment and support of clients who smoked. As part of the trial we offered support at home and so  I was involved with arranging follow up and assessments. Had to manage my own caseload and time manage visiting the wards and seeing clients around doctors etc, Culture was very friendly in my team. Had previously worked within the City hospital so I was well know and approachable . Hardest part  accepting that despite being in hospital and ill, some people do not want to stop, so offering support and an opening for the future was important. 
Enjoyed using my motivational interviewing and nursing/ health knowledge when working with people.Enjoyed being part of a team and working with lots of different people and professionals.
Experience of clinical trial-
Data inputting and questionnaires,which was interesting.

I am responsible for all enquires that come through the main reception area. This can be in person, over the telephone or through the mail. I have to be accomplished in advising students on the academic support that the University offers.  I then have to book appointments for the Academic Services Department. I also book appointments for the international Office. Throughout the day I am expected to process letters for Degree Confirmations,  Banks, Transcripts and Academic References. Since I have been at the Student Services Centre I have been able to improve  my time management skills. A very important part of the role is to be able to communicate effectively. The hardest part of the job is not to be overwhelmed by the volume of letter requests that come through to the centre. The most enjoyable part of the job is completing my work on time with time to spare to be able to determine that all of the students needs are being met on there visit to the Student Services Centre.

Meet new students say goodbye to those leaving. working with those who run the campus. Catering for staff and students, communicating with the foreign students ensuring their stay at the campus is warm and welcoming. No two people are the same everyone has different needs /requirements. Communicating with my manager on a daily basis with regards to effective and efficient running of the establishment. Having a good form of communication with my work colleagues and being an ear to listen to their needs and requirements, whilst making sure they work in a safe enviroment. We are a small team and its difficult when a team member becomes ill but we pull together and we make sure the smooth running of the business is not affected. I most enjoy seeing the students that are far away from home in a new country enjoying themselves in the warm enviroment that we create.
