Great company to work for that has had experience dampen by apprenticeship management
Rolls-Royce is a great company to work for, but the apprenticeship has had its issues. Since day one there has been issues with the way the apprenticeship has been managed, a combination from the company and the external college which provided the foundation training. Most of these issues have been in the form of miss-communication, high levels of apprentice management staff turnover and under-trained staff working at the college. This has resulted in a lot of stressful situations which could normally be rectified easily but with the bloated management system for apprentices, it seems many issues are allowed to develop rather than being rectified promptly. One the other hand, the company has done well to protect the vast majority of apprentice jobs throughout the pandemic, and the quality of learning and training I have had whilst in the workplace has been fantastic. The pay is decent for apprentices and becomes very competitive once qualified. The workload is very manageable and there is flexibility with choosing shift patterns. (At least where I work, and qualified). Overall I would recommend an Apprenticeship at RR but just try to keep yourself focused on the end goal. There will likely be times when stress builds due to factors out of your control, but this can be avoided by trying not to get caught-up with these matters. At the end of the day, the more you put in, the more you will get out of it. Keep that in mind and you can go far at Rolls-Royce.
ProsVery good pay once qualified. Rolls-Royce will help you go far. (If you put the work in).
ConsBloated apprenticeship management and training service.

Good Wages.
I worked as a contractor at the Inchinnan site for just over 6 months. Wages were excellent as are the benefits if you are a full time employee. Unfortunately i had a bit of a rough ride during my time as from day one i witnessed bullying of collegues and even managers it was a toxic environment at times if it wasnt for the money i would have probably walked out. I found that a lot of the staff were long timers over 20years experience and they were the worst. They knew the system well and banded together to manipulate newer workers, contractors and again even managers. You couldn't just turn up and get on with your work without worrying you would be targeted for something. Work wise it was a very laid back atmosphere probably too laid back the company could save alot of money if they kept on top of the workers and timescales. I started at the same time as a large number of contractors who also couldnt believe what staff would get away with especially for the money you are paid. Now although my experience was mainly negative I must say that there were some really great guys in there and the work itself enjoyable when you could get on with it. Unfortunately my contract was terminated early in March due to covid-19 crisis. Although they had been given the chance to furlough us at no cost to themselves the company decided to send us home for a week and halfway through we received a call to say our contract was finished. We were not even allowed to go back to pick up our belonging
ProsExcellent salary
Conspoor management, bullying and a company that does not care about its employees.

Exciting product and great experience
I worked as a Manufacturing Engineer within New Product Introduction. This meant I was exposed to cutting edge products (aircraft engines) and was responsible for aiding in the build procedures, specifically reducing lead time, build issues and resolving design/instructional issues. I learned a significant amount during my employment at Rolls Royce. The experience of working in a world wide organisation that had an extensive range of products and services and how they linked together was excellent. I also experienced working in a heavily regulated environment where all aspect of work were governed by a Quality Management System that linked with legal requirements. I enjoyed working in cross-functional teams which meant I got a greater exposure and a chance to learn different aspects of work within the company. The most enjoyable part of my role was getting to learn about all the build procedures and how an aircraft engine worked and all the intricacies of the design process. I also really enjoyed improving procedures to reduce lead time and/or improve the build quality.

Inspector
MY role was a quality control inspector, working on testing electric wiring harnesses that would be fitted to a royal Navy, Lynx helicopter jet engine. My day would be to check on goods inwards on the components ensuring that they met the MOD requirements; this involved destructive and non-destructive testing. I learned a about working to MOD, and Rolls Royce quality control processes, able to provide evidence of testing and regular on site testing. The management and work based culture was to ensure that any (AOG air craft on ground) was addressed and rectified. Good work ethic in supporting people in training and development progression. The hardest part of the job was to achieve the requirements laid down by the MOD, to ensure that your certification was not compromised. The enjoyable part was seeing and knowing that you have been an integral part of ensuring that the respective jet engine component was fit for purpose and having your unique MOD inspection number clearly visible on the respective components.

Prestigious company in theory, but just a veneer
Great job satisfaction in producing a fantastic product (although not exactly environmentally friendly). RR is heavily overweight in middle management roles: This has meant enhancement from the grades is more likely to be a horizontal move to another department or a long trial as a manager, without the benefits. Sadly, the reasoning for advancement for some was more about accepting ridiculous hours and breaking up effective teams and pitting people against each other, creating a blame culture. Note: Favouritism and poor people management skills are not traits of quality leadership! You could find yourself overloaded whilst others in you team are sitting about chatting. Yet those same people would get exactly the same bonus as you... not acceptable. The loss of the DB pension was the final straw, which emboldened a number of long standing employees to leave, including myself.
ProsStatus, brand, and experience looks great on your CV!
ConsOver-production of cars will eventually diminish exclusivity. NDAs used to silence dissent!

Good company, some issues
RR is an inviting place to work with an enjoyable atmosphere, however beneath this there are head winds which the company is having to fight hard to overcome. A typical day at work is varied, but this is dependant on where you work. I am personally involved in many different and interesting projects, but this comes with the draw back of not being able to offer your full attention to any single one for more than a few hours at a time. The management is a mixture of hard nosed business types and fluffy-personal types. For the most part their hearts are in the right place, but they lack overall consistency and the party line can seem wide. Overall, the job is interesting and challenging, with an excellent and supportive community. The CEO is overtly competent and is doing his level best to turn things for the better. The only quibbles I have are personal!
ProsInteresting work and excellent people
ConsInability to focus on a single task due to variety of interesting work.

Interesting work but poor staff investment and morale.
Very good financial rewards with reasonable salaries and generous share bonus and savings schemes for all. However, if you worked 40 years here don't expect any thank you's from higher management. Just be glad your line manager and friends are there to see you off! Poor staff respect. Its a shame they have an ignorant attitude towards peoples hard work and don't invest any time in any staff events (sporting, work recognition or even social evenings). Nothing to do with money either. Poor decision example: Why have a perfectly good canteen serving hot-food for hard workers when you can strip it all out and force them to eat high priced vending food. Now everyone just eats at their desks. How sad. Get the idea of management here!
ProsSalary benefits depend on RR turnover results, which have been excellent.
ConsPoor facilities for staff enjoyment - No fun events, hot food or celebratory evenings. Very boring management !

Great experience of a workplace
As I'm an administrator I mostly deal with updating databases, ensuring they work more efficiently or are able to provide a solution faster. The more I use spreadsheets for the databases the more my ICT skills are developing and I'm able to use more complex features, such as using codes. It's also a great experience for handling large workloads and then aiding the co-workers which are higher up in the corporation, you then adapt to their skills and their needs from data. The hardest part of the job is collecting all the information from colleagues as there are so many people within the workplace, all carrying out specific workloads, so chasing down becomes a longer job than necessary. The most enjoyable part of the job is when I've learnt a new skills, that can make the spreadsheet I've created appear more professional, which I then get praised for.

Rolls-Royce Plc a great British brand i am proud to work for sure a well known company. Many people there are really friendly and well engrained in the processes and philosophies that R-R install. I found hardest part of my job it to complete to process, processes in R-R don't work they very costly and time consuming. understanding the nature of them is key but how they have been implemented is poor. My co-worker are great they understand my frustrations and aid wherever possible. Management on the other hand seem a bit devoid from the engineering activity always focused on cost, process and cast, There is little focus by management on what we are trying to deliver as a business to our customers. The most enjoyable part of the job is the varied types of work you can get involved in everyday is never the same and there is always something new.

An honest and ethical employer
The normal working day passed quickly, with the correct amount of work that didn't leave you feeling stressed Any traini ng requirements were met either by the company on-line training web site (mylearning) or by externally provided courses There was a general atmosphere of trust. Management briefings were carried out routinely to ensure that all employees were aware of work loading, future contracts etc. Co-workers were generally long term employees (>20 years) with a few contractors making up any short fall in resources due to cotract demand and new apprentices recruited into production to replace the retiring. The business had a family feel about it. Not achieving the set targets for improvement. When the targets set for improvement were achieved and the results were tangible

Toxic, Unable to Execute and on a Downward Spiral
RR Energy is a Delphi infested British Bureaucracy. One Delphi employee who joined RR Corporate Purchasing in early 2000 has brought along most of his Delphi (the bankrupt automotive supplier) coworkers and they are now trying to "transform" RR with their track record and experience at Delphi - the truth is that they get employee loyalty by hiring friends and that leads to political leverage in a highly dysfunctional political organization struggling to deliver results. This nepotism exists in all organizations, but is especially rampant in Energy - Mount Vernon and “buddies” are hired at all levels with no one held accountable. In Mount Vernon, psychology majors, Aramark food supervisors, priests and UPS store employees are all hired as supplier quality "engineers" and technical managers because HR is clueless and so is upper management - both of which are churned out every two years or so to add to the chaos. Learned helplessness is very prevalent and the system is 'you scratch my back and I scratch yours'. Numbers and metrics are changed to hide true performance and meet year end goals. Sandbagging is also very prominent. RR's hiring philosophy is that 'a warm body is better than nobody', leading to incompetence at all levels. The company focuses on ‘good behavior’ to change culture, not realizing that skills and competency are fundamentally missing. RR struggles to retain world-class talent. Salary and benefits are very sub-par but in line with the low qualifications of p

Rolls Royce has its unique challenges.
Most mornings of a typical work day start with prioritization of issues that require immediate management engagement post review of emails (which starts the night before in a global environment) and morning staff meetings. Once imminent concerns are resolved or in the process of resolution I proceed with following up of the status on existing projects and directing corrective actions to assure available resources are in place to achieve committed goals that includes identifying and addressing conflicts. I have learned that listening closely to those to whom you have entrusted high levels of accountability is paramount in order to assure the achievement of a cohesive, successful and effective organization. I have learned that providing management with timely, clear, crisp and complete status on issues that pertain to resolutions, planning and potential concerns is the best way to engender trusted and productive relationships. I fully appreciate that a positive and effective workplace culture needs to be nurtured and developed with trust, personal accountability and appreciation. A high and effective level of communication is critical to build a team that strives towards an understood common goal that fosters trust and reduces ambiguity. The hardest part of my current position is addressing time zone variations and language barriers do to the global environment and the required immediate issue resolutions required. Good company. Poor management & communication.
Overall, this is a good company with flawed management and extremely poor communication. Employees are left in the dark far too often by management. A typical day wasn't typical. The position entailed a wide array of tasks and projects, which kept it interesting and challenging. I learned: SAP to a greater level, enhanced my event planning and marketing skills, as well as presentation and project management skills. On the flip side, somehow, someway the roles and responsibilities of one can fall into the lap of another without any prior knowledge. Next thing, you are doing the job of someone who doesn't want to continue having a certain responsibility. Advancement opportunities are open to a select few; the vast majority are given to their employees who are sent from Germany to the US. Overall, co-workers were nice people. There are always a few sour individuals who use work as a place to spread their misery; those few stand out like sore thumbs. The hardest part of the job (from my perspective and that of many colleagues I spoke with) is the lack of opportunity to advance; while be privy of the financials and seeing employees brought in from Germany and placed in lucrative positions. The most enjoyable part of the job was the ability to interact with and get know any of the 300+ employees.

Rolls Royce Naval Marine Inc.
* A typical day at work is looking for work to do. The maintenance program that I am working on doesn't keep me busy for a whole work day. After I'm finished with the activities related to the maintenance program, I normally assist a co-worker that has more of a workload that he could handle. * What I learned about my current job is salary is not the most important aspect of a job. I had better jobs making less money where I was more involved with the day to day activities. * I don't agree about my current managers management style. I feel as if my current manager should have connected with me better when I first started with Rolls-Royce Naval Marine. I don't feel as if I was properly orientated or provided with the necessary training to be effective in my position. * I get along and work with my co-workers well. Although the position comes with a culture shock compared to the previous companies where I worked, I found a way to connect with most of my co-workers. * The hardest part of my day is not having enough work to do to keep me busy and engaged. * The most enjoyable part of my job is my most of my co-workers. I enjoy connecting with different people and learning about them as well as them learning about me.

Rolls-Royce, Two Companies under One Umbrella
I was originally hired to work in their LibertyWorks Division, a separate management structure to work on military projects. I enjoyed the work and the people I worked with. My work was all classified or Secret as was my work at Raytheon. During a reorganization, a new department was created called System Design Integration. I was placed in this department under new management doing things I did not fullly understand most of the time. This is my experience over the last two plus years. I am penalized for not knowing the things of SDI Engineers because I was never trained nor did I ever want to be an SDI Engineer. It's mostly handling endless forms, no design work, etc. It is completely outside of my skillset. Talks with management, Ethics and HR have proved fruitless. So I'm stuck in a job I hate with no other regress than to look for work elsewhere. RR is reorganizing again and there are rumors of a sell-off of part of the company. Over the last 15 years, I grown a strong attachment to the Indianapolis area and wish not to relocate, if possible.
ProsLearned a new CAD system NX to go with my previous experience with Solid Edge and Pro/Engineer.
ConsI could not get the company to supply me with Mathcad or SnagIt, I've had no raises in two years.

Rolls-Royce is an excellent place to work with many different opportunities
Rolls-Royce is an excellent place to work with many different opportunities from a student beginning to global Rolls-Royce assignments. There have been opportunities in different areas of the business as my career evolved from local factory industrial engineering to global process improvements. International travel, working with the global businesses to define requirements and solutions, working with external IT companies to deploy the new infrastructure and applications have all been exciting and enlightening opportunities. Rolls-Royce has a diverse workforce and stresses the importance of ethics. As a global company, one might be on conference calls in the morning with UK colleagues and then taking actions to complete before the next day. Conversely, UK employees might work actions in their mornings in preparation for afternoon calls. Collaboration is a must. The opportunity to work globally and travel has been educational, learning to work together and become acquainted with other cultures and companies.

Busy place with lots of business, but abysmal managers and leadership
Whew --- where to start. Outstanding workforce with many people who'd been there over 20 years. And tons of work to do --- a genuinely thriving business, but . . . Many managers, including the Plant Manager, operated in a very negative, non-transparent style. Promotions, recognition, and any sort of acknowledgement of a job well-done were usually seen to be the result of favoritism vs merit. One manager, who would not train or otherwise prepare any new personnel, and had regularly demoted or terminated many of his subordinates, was allowed to run his department without any apparent over-sight by HR. Another manager, who had successfully introduced a 'lean' program into his department, resulting in a >90% improvement in his department's output, was first castigated, then terminated, by his supervisor for 'poor performance' when it came time for his review. Lots of good people there --- especially the first-line supervisors out on the shop floor . . . super-knowledgeable, fair, and easy to work with. There may have been some good managers there, but the atmosphere was not one that encouraged anyone to make any suggestions to change the status-quo --- including me. I couldn't wait to leave.
