the people make the work place
Currently going through major change but even through these challanging times the people continue to make it a great place to work. the demand on the staff can be very stressful at times but with great support from senior managers you can feel like you can make a difference.

SSE is a large company but treats everyone as an individual and respects everyone's rights and opinions. Great ethical company and the pay is a fair living wage

Overall ok
New manager started and he didn’t have any clue or life experience and tried to put me onto a disciplinary for being off three times during a pregnancy during my probation period - of which the third time was because I had a late miscarriage - politely told him to F off and had to be sorted by higher management before I sued them

Good Work Colleagues
The other employees and your work colleagues are generally a good bunch of people. The teams I have worked in have been a happy and engaging and the best people I have worked with. There is also good benefits and the wages are well above minimum wage even for the lowest paid workers. I do believe higher management are a bit less connected with the people on the ground floor and some of the recent decisions have not been the best.

Changing times
SSE has been a great company to work for. They have been genuine in wanting and trying to do the best for employees and customers. Opportunities have been available to those who work hard and smart. More recently, business challenges have meant a change in the environment but I sincerely hope that SSE and its employees regain everything that made it a good place to work.

Busy and Friendly Workplace
I worked in 3 departments from 2006 - 2011. I worked in Data Entry in my 1st department, working with Sales Consultants. I worked in Contract Admin in my 2nd department, working with Sales Consultants and Field Sales Agencies. I worked in Business Marketing as a Admin Assistant in my 3rd department, working with managers, promotions agencies, advertising agencies and events companies. All was very busy at times, but worked with some good people who was always helpful.

Zero support
Purely about targets which for the most part, are unobtainable. Part time staff have similar targets for full timers but the call numbers make it impossible to reach. So many issues when targets aren’t met and you have to give reason after reason why you can’t sell central heating cover in the middle of summer! Cannot hang up on customers so having customers scream at you for 30 minutes is common but you’re expected to take it. Then get moaned at for taking too long on the phone without a sale and moaned at for raising a complaint and making more work. Managers often refuse to take escalated calls. Retention is awful because staff are treated as disposable. Dedicated great place to work team who promise the stars but do literally nothing to implement it. They say there’s tonnes of progression but it’s dead mans shoes in that place. Call agents have been there for years trying to progress and it isn’t because they’re not talented, there just isn’t the progression available. My manager told me the ins and outs of colleagues personal meetings, resignation reasons, disciplinary meetings and conversations and spoke negatively about other staff members often. I know a lot about staff because my manager couldn’t stop gossiping and giving out confidential information. Managers give half of their managerial work to agents because they can’t be bothered and leave work constantly to run personal errands. The ONLY saving grace about that place is the free parking.

How should you prepare for an interview at SSE PLC?

I was a Customer Service Advisor so I'll write about what I know. For hints as to how to conduct yourself or things to say, pay attention to the job description, check out their homepage, to see what's hot, and their CEO's blog. Wear smart professional but no need to overdo it as they're pretty tolerant about looks in the work place: there's no dress code as such, just exercise your common sense (nothing offensive or unprofessional, logically). Performance matters more. Show an open mind and willingness to learn, and that you're ready to handle what's thrown at you ("yes, I can do that" or "that's not a problem" are always winners). If you pass this stage, you and other hopefuls will go on to Assessment day when, among other activities, you'll go through some written tests to assess your basic maths, language and other necessary skills. For the maths test, read the sheaf of printouts they gave you previously, it shows all you need to know. The test is short, nothing complex; don't worry if you can't finish it all in time, what matters is what you write in it, and HOW (be accurate, concise and to the point: given the volume of calls if you have to deal with daily, they need people who can think on their feet and juggle quite a few balls at the same time). You'll know if you were successful or not within the half hour.

As a customer service advisor, are there overtime opportunities? And if so at what rate?

There's not much overtime. But there's always extra work at the emergency centre in Hilsea, they work 24/7 and pay well. If you go for this and you're on call, ideally you should not a car as they can call you at 11 at night for example. But due to the fact that you made yourself available and were on call (you stayed indoors or nearby when you could have been doing something else), you'll get paid whether they need you to come to work or not. Obviously it's not the same pay if you work or not, but the rates are pretty much anyway. If you're ok with crazy shifts, you should grab this one.

Yes. You get time and a half or double time depending when you decide to do the overtime. Bank holidays and Sundays are the higher paid days
