- worst place to work! Definitely a culture of if your face fits.  If you suck up to management, drive them about, bring them in coffees etc, basically be their PA then you will go far.

- hard work gets you absolutely nowhere! Do everything that is expected of a great employee and go out of your way to do your best, improve, help others, cover shifts, work tonnes of extra shifts for free to help out does absolutely nothing.  You do not even get employee of the month.  Be lazy, never get all your work done, be rude to customers and in general be a bad employee but have a laugh with the manager then you are doing great.

- problems that have been ongoing for years, like the same members of staff repeatedly doing the same mistakes like NEVER pricing their aisle or rotating dates with stock goes unoticed.  Even when it is pointed out.  In fact they just get employee of the month or the overtime they have been looking for. 

- pricing is always a problem, always will be and has been for years but nothing gets done about it so it will just continue.  Pricing problems not only aggrivate and put cusomters off but it also causes major problems for till staff having to deal with angry customers and holding up the queue.  The till staff then have to call for a member of staff to go and check the correct price.  Sometimes the bar codes do not work either so if the person who put the stock out actually went to price it they would realise this and it could be taken to the office for them to contact I.T.  Instead it’s left until a customer takes it to the checkout, the till staff having to call for another member of staff to take the product to the office, for the staff in the office to try and instantly get a code out of about a million descriptions in a matter of minutes.  I have seen staff members, to save time, just take the code for any product that sounds similar to the one they are looking for, regardless of price or even if we have ever stocked it just because they are seriously strapped for time in an incredibly busy environment and do not want to keep the customer waiting.  All this just because someone cannot be bothered to price stock or the pricing gun is unavailable during their shift.

- staff are like family if you have worked there a long time and they are the only reason you get through most days.  However, just like families there are plenty of arguments.  This is usually caused by people continuously not pulling their weight.  This means other team members have to do extra on top of their own workload to make up for it which is frustrating to say the least.

- you have to do two stocktakes a year in your own store and forced to do at least another two a year for other stores. If you genuinely cannot attend you still get threatened with disciplinary action. 

- health and safety regulations constantly get ignored and u get forced to work against them.  

- get made to sign paperwork stating you have been taught health and safety and the use of fire extinguishers and which ones are appropriate to use etc when you haven’t been taught anything.

- warehouses are a health and safety and fire hazard nightmare, due to far too much stock coming in as triggers get ignored by buyers/suppliers.

B&M’s ways of doing things are completely backwards and old fashioned.  When delivery’s come in, you do not scan them to check all the stock is there before it getting put out.  You get pallets upon pallets of stock and then paperwork comes through for the admin to then go and find all the stock with sometimes the stock you have been invoiced for not coming in for another two weeks.

- not enough equipment by far! Too many staff having to use one or two pricing guns and printers.  One of these already getting used by the price controller or by a supervisor.  Sometimes a manager if they feel they need to look busy for five minutes.  One computer for manager, deputy manager, supervisor, cash office, admin and sometimes security to share. 

-admin get paid the same as shop floor staff even though they have tonnes of responsibility regarding stock and some documents that get audited.  At times have to help managers/supervisors do their jobs as they haven’t a clue yet can somehow manage to tell you that you are doing your job wrong.
 
- rules constantly change with the weather and however your boss is feeling. If you can’t keep up or cannot read minds then you are in trouble! 

- admin does not have admin title it is just general assistant.  Supervisors and cash office only make 50p extra but have to fight for months to get it when they have been promoted. 

- if you work more than your contracted hours for a certain amount of time your contract is meant to change to reflect this.  However, this does not happen unless you are bosses favourite, even if you have been working above your contract continuously for years! 

- management lie on paperwork for audits and lie when they are in the wrong, blaming it on other staff.  Nothing gets done about this and it gets believed, as nobody gets to speak to anyone higher up than the store manager.

-management have no clue how to manage, they think you just need to be bossy.  It is all personal with them. 

- rotas changed at last minute or even on your days off without warning.  No phone call from management to say so and you do not find out till you turn up for the now non-existant shift.  If however, you do not give them at least one hours notice if you cannot make your shift ( i have heard people been told 24hrs notice before)  then you get threatened with discipline again. 

-no handbooks for employees yet you are constantly reminded that you signed and uunderstood the handbook.  You get shown this when you start so you can answer questions on some paperwork and then you never see it again. 

- no training whatsoever. You get shown something once and then thrown in at the deep end.  If you get asked to be shown again you get moaned at and classed as incompetent. 

- people get offically disciplined without warning, so are unable to get someone from their union to sit in with them. 

-  not being paid properly is constant. When you ask your manager to correct it, you do not get it back till next pay day and therefore get taxed on it. Completely unacceptable!!
 
- management go out of their way to push people out or get them sacked if they do not like them.  

- constantly get put down and made to feel stupid.  Management will give you into trouble for doing something even if they have also done it them self. 

- several people on the sick and some long term sickness at te same time as they cannot deal with the demeaning, bullying, favouritism culture.  This puts huge amount of pressure on other staff to cover for the staff on the sick as we get no extra help, not even from the manager when things are extremely tough, as this would require them getting off their backside!

-psychical and mental health disabilities/injuiries ignored.

- managers from other stores all call around to each other when area management are out visiting without notice.  This then leads to a high stress environment as everybody is made to make everything look as perfect as can be in the shortest amount of time so that the place SEEMS to be running well. 

- staff who once wanted to progress to management/supervisor etc and even paid for their own courses on the side to help them progress, eventually give up or leave as this does not matter or is valued. 

I know this is a seriously long post but believe it or not I could go on.  Basically, if you want to have a 8/12/16hr contract and can survive on that whilst not caring about your work,  not wanting to progress, have your physical and mental health at risk, are a mindreader, like being constantly threatened with discipline then feel free to apply as you will do well. 

I have seen B&M try to do better but it feels like they just put it in writing so it seems they are doing everything ethically and legally,  as these rules do not get implemented by store management. 

If B&M really want to improve and not lose out on staff who genuinely want to be a good employee and progress within the company, then I would advise they find a way to send private questionnaires to all its employees so that they can ANONYMOUSLY and PRIVATELY voice their concerns and opinions.

As an ex-member of senior management at B&M Retail Ltd, I can say that my experience is not standard - having been trained at other stores and heard stories of how other stores are managed, I've seen that every store is quite different. There is not much in the way of standardization, specialization, or approach to the job. There is one clear cut reason for this.

Hours. There are not enough in the day for what you're given to do, and no two stores are the same. One store might have a problem with warehouse capacity due to an oddly shaped storage area causing logistics problems. One might have stocking issues due to odd shelving or aisle dimensions. One might have their entire stockroom upstairs with no elevator. One might have less tills than usual for a store of its size, causing issues when there are refunds. To work at B&M, especially as management, you need to be time efficient, diversely trained, and extremely versatile. If you're not, you will fail.

Every now and then head office will get some idea to improve one aspect of their stores. This means that other aspects of the store will suffer as a result, and which aspect, is up to your general manager's (and by extension your area manager's) discretion. Whether it's standards, customer service, health and safety, level of fill, sales, stockroom levels or pricing. Something's gotta give, and you can't keep every one of those plates spinning all the time. You can have a pristine shop floor and a junkyard out the back, or a meticulous, empty back area with a health and safety nightmare out the front. I used to compare our equipment area to the Gideon Meat Plant from the Saw movies.

In my store, management, as the only people with 30 or more hour contracts, were worked to the bone, and often did things outside their job description. I don't think a customer service manager should be tidying several aisles a night, baling cardboard, taking in deliveries with a pallet truck, stacking pallets, or stocking shelves when there is paperwork to be kept on top of, sales data to be analyzed, and a hundred and one audit points in the cash office to be reviewed. Alas, that is the case. Similarly, when I was in the replenishment role, I was resolving customer service complaints, floating tills, counting the safe and occasionally operating a till. The entire time I was conducting maintenance on the trolleys, rebooting/troubleshooting tills, fixing the recycling baler, taking out the bins, litter picking out the front of the store, date checking the fridges, and a hundred and one more menial tasks, whether I was a floor worker or senior management. And not because I was told to in the latter case, but often because I didn't have anyone else to do it.

And despite this, if you are duty manager, in charge of an entire store, you are responsible for any health and safety incidents that may arise, when you maybe have a few people at most, for all of whom any time not spent stocking or tidying will put you behind schedule, whether it be clearing stockroom space for the former, or getting out at a halfway reasonable time for the latter. There is zero leeway. Anything left by the wayside, stays there, until a concerted effort is made, which, again, leaves you behind schedule in other aspects. So, as the one with the more flexible schedule, are you gonna delegate someone to pick up all the overstock lying around, straighten up all the bulk stacks, and the various items strewn all over the shop floor, or do it yourself? It's often best to do it yourself, and get it done and over with, rather than delegating it to someone with a 12 hour contract, and having to shout at them afterwards for taking more than the 15 minutes required to do it.

The best analogy for the B&M experience is to tread water in an eight foot deep pool. You're gonna dip beneath, and you can push yourself above the water again to breathe, but you're nonetheless gonna have to keep treading, because until you leave, you are not getting out of that water. I have seen quality people who were with the company for a decade lose the plot in that place because they simply can't do what is expected of them, and not for lack of effort.

Good luck having a life outside of the store when you're treading water to 23:00 and back in again at 7:00 during the Christmas holidays, stressed to the gills and sleep deprived.

I got sent to B&M on a two week "placement" whilst I was on Job Seeker's - I was already volunteering three days a week at a charity at the time.

My first day consisted of an "induction" which lasted approximately three hours - we signed paperwork, and were shown the fire exits within the store.

I asked the manager of the day if I was okay to wear a long-sleeved, plain jumper (not unlike the company-provided ones, sans logo.) and this was okayed after I explained that I had eczema on my arms; I understand that it's not nice to look at, and I prefer to have it covered up in any case. But just an hour later, she scolded me for wearing a jumper and asked me to take it off; I had an appropriate t-shirt and changed into this, but was later told to change BACK into my jumper as there had been "complaints" about my eczema.

All this aside, my co-workers were lovely - perfectly willing to show me what to do and help me. Mostly, I was left to my own devices, making sure that stock was appropriately rotated, and faced forward. On my first day, I had done what was asked of me, and attempted to find a manager to find out what I ought to do next. On my way, I saw an employee who was struggling with her job, so I offered some assistance. We completed it together, and the manager came up to me at this point, and scolded me for using my own initiative and helping a co-worker.

I was also made to push stock cages that were taller and heavier than me, despite obviously struggling with them, they were often overstocked and also very unsafe due to wobbly wheels. Unauthorised/untrained people were openly using the baler and were showing others how to use it.

Lunch-times for myself and the other "temporary" workers were erratic and changed from day to day - the paid employees had a rota, and we were due to have our own rota, but this never happened. Instead, I had to ask the manager to go for dinner. On one occasion, I was left six hours before being allowed to go for dinner because she never appeared. Lunch time was only half an hour, despite eight hour shifts. There were no other breaks offered i.e. rest breaks.

We were supposed to find a manager if we needed to go off the shop floor also, so large amounts of time were spent needing a toilet break and/or quick drink because the manager was virtually impossible to track down and we were told off if we left our assigned aisles - this meant that we had to wait for the manager to come and see us or ask an employee to request her over the tannoy. I suffered dehydration headaches as a result.

Little consideration for health conditions was given - I was made to clean with products that affect my asthma and eczema and given no gloves despite explaining that I needed them, gloves were "not available". I had to visit my doctor after the placement because my eczema was the worst that it had been for years. I have no problem with cleaning, but proper care was not taken to protect my health.

Also, our bags were searched at the end of the day by the male security guard; feminine hygiene products were often left on the table for all and sundry to see - we weren't allowed to take them back or put them elsewhere because they had to check everything. I understand the need for this, but having such personal items displayed in front of everyone else who was waiting for a bag check was highly embarrassing. I wouldn't have minded if it were simply the manager and the security guard, but all of the employees were crowded into a small office, watching. Also, it bothered me that they took the items out themselves rather than allowing us to remove the items and prove that the bag was empty.

Overall, if I were a paid employee, I would definitely be kicking up a big fuss about this - however, I was backed into a corner with the offer of a job at the end of the placement, and the threat that I would be "let go" if I refused to do anything. Being "let go" would have resulted in a sanction.

Once you get through the turnstiles, it takes forever to leave the premises. They have a security team who believe everyone is a thief. Security constantly look for faults and excuses not to let you leave the yard. You will be sent back to the transport office for the smallest of discrepancies on your paperwork. I don't mind working long hours but the physically demanding efforts you have to exert means by your fourth and fifth day you are physically exhausted. A delivery can take up to THREE HOURS, some shops don't have space for the deliveries. Some shops (if you're lucky) have fork lifts and no fork lift trained workers or you turn up in a box trailer to a fork lift shop everything has to be unloaded manually. You are not allowed to let a forklift take pallets off the rear of the vehicle.

There are far too many managers, this creates a toxic environment where the management really feel they need to prove they are needed. I have experienced the most pathetic unnecessary investigations known to mankind. Management seem to get excited when an investigation is taking place and a dismissal imminent.

The depot I work has three driving assessors, they definitely do not need this many most of the day they are doing nothing or pretending to be busy it really is beyond a joke.

I don't think it is a productive job, I found that the company really struggled to see what was wrong because they didn't want to hear the excuse. Pallets in excess of 1,000kg some drinks were at 1,200kg. These pallets put a lot of pressure on the tail lifts causing hydraulic fluid to burst.

If every shop had curtain siders with all the shops having forklifts. I'd say this is the best job I've ever had and I would stay permanently. Health and safety is over the top on some trailers and non existent on other trailers particularly the tail lift health and safety.

Each shop has a black camera which is a live feed to the distribution centre should they wish to snoop or spy on you. Thus you may never cut corners such as leaving the yellow flaps on the tail lift down. This causes a lot of unnecessary repetitive strain injury. Some new trailers have metal bars at the back which you can close instead of the yellow flaps.

I absolutely loathe them yellow flaps they are a deadweight designed only out of ignorance and sheer stupidity without a more ergonomically healthier design especially as technology is advancing so progressively.

The work can mean you have to sleep on the road overnight. My advice is to stick to the 13 hour rule and tell the office you are heading back don't risk a night out you are not a tramper. £26.00 to sleep in the lorry when you could have come home. Unless you are greedy and unhygienic. We only have X amount of days hours minutes on this Earth why waste it in a lorry cab. Unless you are a tramper far from home then so be it albeit I applied for a day job.

They used to have Scania lorries now they have DAF only the old drivers love DAF it's like driving a luxury car then being given a Ford first or a Citroën C1. I loathe DAF lorries they make me feel like I have no class.

You'll never understand your salary, believe me I've tried it is undoubtedly exceptionally hard to do. The company doesn't separate your pay into the correct columns for additional hours and basic making it hard to understand any queries about your pay will not be easy to justify as you cannot fathom what on Earth the payroll are playing at.

You are paid 13 times a year on a 4 weekly basis most shop businesses take this approach to paying wages.



B&M in a nutshell.

As Till Staff you are made to work in severely understaffed situations. It can be packed in store, and you would be the only till staff on duty (not including till supervisors), you can be in situations where you need a supervisor to reduce something or speak to a customer, and they would all be sat in the office talking (this will be a recurring trend). If you are someone who has social anxiety, that wont be taken into account, you will just be moaned at for not selling more upsells.

As Shop Floor, your job is basically quantity over quality. When putting out stock, its just about pallet count "How many pallets have you done" "why haven't you done 'said' amount of pallets" they don't care if you put the same product at 3-4 different points on an isle, as long as you don't bring it back in the warehouse. This leads to the store looking awful. You spend time merchandising the area you want to put some stock out, so that the products you have will actually fit, and look tidy? You will be told off for taking too long putting stock out. Are you the kind of person who will go out of their way to help customers? you'll get told off for not working stock fast enough.

There can be situations where both Shop Floor, and Shop Floor Supervisors are working stock, The Supervisors would just throw pallets of overstock and cages of cardboard in the warehouse, (and therefore work the stock quicker) then complain at the shop floor for working slower than them. If shop floor were to just do what they were doing they wouldn't hear the end of it. Supervisors are often found chatting in the office, on their phones whilst on the shop floor (sometimes even whilst on the forklift unloading deliveries...) or hiding around the corner of the store smoking, they also seem to be allowed a lot more in terms of breaks than the average staff member as well.

Communication between Managers, Supervisors, Shop Floor, Tills, and Twilight is near nonexistent, which leads to pure chaos when everything goes wrong (pretty common occurrence) 

The environment of the average store is a breeding ground for favoritism, bullying, talking behind others backs, and lies. Which makes the cesspool that is the average B&M working environment even worse.

Health and Safety doesn't really exist in this place, new staff aren't really put through what they should do in situations, most people don't even know that the company can supply safety boots. The Forklifts we get supplied with are unreliable and dangerous (We had a replacement turn up to cover our broken one, and it was in a worse state than the one being repaired. I don't just mean little things either, the backrest extension nearly fell off and the brakes didn't work)  

One thing I am glad about with this company, is that they don't do zero hour contracts, but i'd imagine if they did, they would abuse them to no end, considering they think 8 hour contracts are enough for some people, then go and hire someone else on a 20 hour contract, after the person on 8 hours asked if they can get their contract raised.

No one deserves to go through this for the dreadful pay we get (when we actually get paid properly, staff are expected to go out of their way to make sure we get paid correctly, because the people in charge of sorting out our pay and hours, do a horrendous job at it.

The only rest bite of this company is your fellow staff members, they are willing to help you when you need it, bring you up when you are down, and have a good laugh.   

If you are given the opportunity to work for B&M, turn your back and run.....its not worth it.

When I started at B&M it was from the very beginning, I was 'trained' (I watched a ton of irrelevant videos) with people who became the reason I continued the job. We put the place together,  became like a family, hours were good and management were laid back and pretty understanding. The first two months were fantastic and I can't take that away. However... 

Come the end of the second month it began slipping, and fast. Waves of redundancy whittled down staff from 80 employees to 20. The workload kept increasing, the teams were less than half their original size and we're all expected to meet totally unrealistic targets in order to keep our jobs. The hours went from 40 down as low as 10 some weeks, now reaching their plateau at 20 meaning our salaries are just pitiful. 

The immaturity and lack of professionalism within the management was at first endearing but in time you learn a company can't operate like this. Rumours run rampant in all walks of the store, no intervention in fact the flames were fanned by management till morale completely declined and favouritism took over. The total lack of competence is quite literally indescribable, if you came from a professionally run company such as ASDA or Sainsburys, you would be horrified I can pretty much guarantee. 

The 'freedom to retail' they tout means they can and will rearrange half the shelving at whim and you will be penalised for the extra time you take in having to track down the newly located lines of stock. The triggers sent from the main branch are ultra sensitive so two sales of a product will likely result in a case of them included in your next delivery, in a store that has hundreds of lines, this becomes a drastic problem when the warehouse is quite literally packed top to bottom, in what can only be described as an illegal disregard for health and safety, not to mention utterly ridiculous when searching for particular stock. 

The goal posts for what they expect of you move constantly and the feedback you get varies wildly  from manager to manager, so one will tell you everything's looking good and the other will question why you're still employed, you don't know where you stand. If other colleagues aren't pulling their weight expect to receive a portion of the blame for it when the entire store wasn't sorted fast enough, incentives die out fast as does any sort of kudos or thanks plus you can bet any good hard work you do no matter how consistent will be overlooked the second someone's in a bad mood. 

Oh and this is a big one - they use a single CD of royalty free music, which stays on repeat all day every day. The songs are abhorrent and tasteless to anyone blessed with the gift of hearing, you'll be tormented by them for years to come. 

In conclusion I say this - if you plan on working for this company, wait for a new store and do it for three months, this is the glory period before things go South. I pity any soul that throws themselves into the middle of this and the false but convincing promises that you will be rewarded for working hard will stick in the back of your mind when you finally summon the courage to leave and wonder how on Earth they haven't been closed down by the government.

A typical day would involve entering the store, going through to the back & signing the attendance sheet. There's normally someone there to talk with & get yourself ready for work...

Then it goes downhill!

I used to get on with my work as soon as time started, as did the other replenishment staff. While the day staff would be sitting around the canteen or chatting in the aisle/ at tills. Management would be in the office... doing "paperwork" 
It was fine and didn't bother me at the beginning... but it soon becomes apparent that YOU are working way harder than other staff, yet paid the same wages... £6.05 per hour by the way... legally the lowest wage possible.

I could be standing unloading a cage, then talking with customers & helping with their enquiries. The cages were old & some broken, but just functional... BARELY. I'd load the cage full, go out into the store and begin re-stocking the shelves - a day staff member would come up & start chatting... would they help with the cage? NOPE! They stand there watching you work, sweating and worried your not moving quick enough... no teamwork there - then twaddle off to the canteen for another drink/chat up with other staff...

I worked extremely hard, as did other members of the replenishment team. We did a lot of good work but never really got thanked - and if you were it was like a backhanded "ta-very much! oh you're sooo great at your job!" patronising way. Treated like a child, even though your an adult trying to do the best in a company with little to no respect for it's employee's.

Co-workers were really nice generally - everyone got on at first but soon rumours & lies spread about the place like wildfire and people got uneasy. Imagine having to face your manager knowing another member of staff called her "useless b!tch" Talk about her personal life was often the 'Topic Of the Day' as was her Wardrobe choices...It was very depressing, the backstabbing was rife...
The whole place was very high school-esque, cliques formed all the time... 

Management were young and untrained. Although the store manager was busy & stressed - it was often the assistant manager we dealt with. She was bossy, but got the job done. Sometimes you had to call for assistance and they took FOREVER to come and help you/the customer with enquiries or at tills... it got embarrassing & frustrating.

Most of the equipment was unfit for purpose, broken or unusable. The pallet trucks were infuriating to use, luckily I escaped doing the delivery my entire time there... phew!

Staff went missing... only for us to find out they were sacked or left as they were pressured into other roles. It was the lowest of the low kind of blackmail - " DO this or you'll lose your job!..." - this happened more and more as staff quit. More than one person was stealing from the company during their time and got sacked... yeah these are the people your working with... NOT good!

I could go on and on but really I've moved on, not looked back!

Just don't do it. I would hate to end up back there & have had nightmares about it - my mental health & well being are more important then B&M... I would suggest ripping up that application form.

Decent annual salary for a full time floor manager at B&M, floor manager is basically B&M's version of a shift manager, typical day is running of the shop floor responsible for a team of 10 or more floor colleagues/customer assistants, delegating shop floor departments to each floor colleague that they are then responsible for to keep fully stocked, clean, tidy, fully priced and always presentable for customers throughout the day as well as working deliveries and keeping on top of back stock. As a floor manager I trained across all key areas of store operations so it enables me to manage the store effectively and confidently either along side store management or in the absence of store management, which includes supervision of store colleagues, overseeing customer service such as running checkout staff handling cash and security responsibilities, processing banking, stock replenishment, accepting deliveries and completing the correct delivery paperwork, actioning markdowns/reductions, controlling food waste, stock availability, making sure payroll is up to, ensuring compliance with company policies and health and safety procedures are followed and adhered to at all times by all store colleagues and many more daily tasks and daily routines a member of store management needs to understand and learn to ensure the smooth and efficient operations of the store. At my store the . management team and customer assistant colleagues all work together very well and we have a good working relationship which in turn keeps a really good working environment and pleasant atmosphere, don't get me wrong there Are very stressful and trying times each of us experience from time to time but we can always rely on each other in some way or form and we have each others backs stepping up when needed the most and because of this good working relationship between management and colleagues for me personally it drives me to want to work hard putting in my best efforts into my work because I believe if you see management and colleagues working hard and going that extra mile it drives others to put their best efforts in too. There's so much opportunity to progress within the company if you want it and put the hard work in and it's a very fast progression which makes B&M a retail job that you can get a life long career out of and the higher you Go the bigger salary prospects you get along with bigger and better benefits such as company cars and bonuses 

Without a doubt the worst place I've ever had the misfortune of working, even after quitting I still can't decide what the worst part about it was. From 0 covid precautions to the dealing with the most ill mannered customers no day in B&M is ever the same - it somehow gets worse with every passing day. Favouritism runs rife across the board from work duties to working hours and that's something that won't change so if you for some reason still decide to apply for a job here don't think you'll be enjoying weekends off anytime soon. A prime example of this favouritism is asking evening staff members to start early unpaid to allow day staff to go home, when in reality the day staff sit in the canteen with 20 minutes to go on their shift and the night staff are 9/10 times forced to stay 15 mins unpaid after while waiting to be let out of the building.

The management and a few of the supervisors have 0 management and man management skills. Seriously have to wonder how they managed to get the job. They treat the staff like dirt and speak to them in the same manner. The store manager is so disconnected from what goes on with their own staff and only cares about whinging at stuff they can't be bothered to do themselves. Don't think for one second about voicing any concerns because they will be swiftly ignored.

During covid the lack of any precautions speaks volumes for what type of store B&M is, from no social distancing in the canteen, to 80% of staff and customers not wearing masks or even being told to, some of whom had already been off due to catching covid. At the tills there is 0 protection for the staff whereas in other stores such as home bargains or tesco the staff are fully covered by screens and customers are provided masks on entrance.

The stores are bad enough but when B&M as a company decide to reward staff with an extra weeks wages as a thank you for working during covid it was nothing but a news story to make them look good. In reality they only paid staff that had worked for the company before covid not those hired for or during it.

Still don't think this review does enough justice to how awful B&M is but at the end of the day I'm done with the place and they still work there lol. I'm not wasting anymore time with it. I should note that not all the staff were bad and this is mainly aimed at the higher ups, I hope the nice members of staff can get out of working there as soon as possible, as most of the nice ones in the past have already done. If this review can help even one person to say no to working in it then my jobs done.

B&m is a fun environment to work in, everyone’s always up for having a laugh & your always being productive so when it comes to long hours you don’t actually feel like you’ve been there for that long. I’ve always loved my job & being in customer service. You’ll find people who you get along with more than others & you’ll soon find your regulars that come in who you can have a laugh with. 
They don’t tend take your mental health into consideration. Sometimes the long hours can be draining when you’re not in the right head space but they don’t understand that. I’ve suffered a lot whilst working here & when it came to returning work no one ever really asked how I was or if I wanted any help, it just got brushed under the carpet & forgotten about. They offered the retail trust service so I rang them explained how I was feeling they just told me to ring 999 if I ever felt in danger towards myself & that was it. The way B&m described my mental health issues was an ‘illness’ which it is far from that. 
The wages are only minimum wage so when I first started at the age of 16 I was only on £4.35 & I’d do 30 hours a week & only came out with just over £400 a month, even now I’m 19 I’m on £6.56 which i don’t think is very fair considering I do a lot more work compared to some of the older ones.
I think the younger staff are treated very differently compared to the older ones, the younger ones seem to be watched a lot of the time on things they’re doing. 
Having no drinks or chairs allowed on the tills which I don’t think is very fair because when you’re stood in the same place for a long amount of time you get a lot of back pain & only having water on the till sounds fine but it’s not very fair if you don’t like water. 
trying to make plans around work as well is very tricky, especially if you’re young. You’re required to work every weekend so when it comes to going out if I’m working both days at the weekend it’s a struggle to be able to go out, being able to enjoy yourself & not having to have a time limit on going home because you’ve got work the next day. Being a young girl I want to be able to go out most of the time thats what I enjoy doing & you don’t get that many holidays either they give you holiday days just based off of your contracted hours when I do probably 20+ hours over my contracted a week. Working every other weekend or one day at the weekend seems fair but no one ever takes it in turns. Even if you want to make plans for a weekend months away and you have no holiday left the likelihood is they won’t give it you off. 
You don’t get enough breaks & long enough breaks for the hours you work.
