Where to start: So I want to start out by saying that there are far worse employers to work for (and i know from experience) but that being said there are some key problems with the company and as such I will list them below:

1) Contracts- Probably my main issue with the company. 
-Firstly you are incredibly lucky if you are not offered with a weekend contract. Essentially this means that whilst you can work overtime in the week you MUST work every saturday and sunday (unless it is booked as a holiday) There isn't really any flexibility with this kind of contract for example, if you want to swap a saturday and/or sunday for a day in the week because of an important event you cannot really do this. As a result this severely affects your social life.
-Secondly you are also lucky to be offered with a full time contract (39 hours) or anything over or equal to 30 hours. Instead they will hire several people on 16-24 hour contracts and give them full time work when it suits the company. But when the overtime gets cut during bad sales months, expect to be working just your contract. I find this unfair on people who rely on the job for full time work. Also when you book your holidays you will only be paid for your contracted hours. The company's counter argument to this is that it means they have more staff to cover the busy periods but i think that this is inconsiderate and selfish on behalf of the company.

2)Management- This is a multi-layered criticism
-Management are often relocated several times to different stores across their region (i.e. East Midlands, West Midlands). This has also happened several times to certain managers in an annual period. I know one manager with who, this happened to 4 times in a single year! One bad visit from a regional manager or one or more customer complaints does not make it right to relocate managers. You are punishing them for something that might not even be their fault and secondly, you are not really solving any potential issues of performance, customer service etc. All you are doing is shifting the issues for another store to have.
-Tying in with this, many employees who otherwise would be suitable for a management role are put off at taking the step into management in fear of this happening to them...
-As a result, you will get managers who are often hired with no relevant retail experience or in some cases none at all. All the managers I have worked with who have either worked their way up with the company or who have some similar experience are good at their jobs. They know how to instruct, delegate and are not afraid of pulling their finger out to help out with some of the more manual work when required. But unfortunately, this group of managers is being phased out with managers who are likely to be graduates with no good retail experience or managers who bring with them no good transferable skills. Nothing against graduates as I am one myself and there are graduates out there who can do a good job but it is fundamental that they know and understand all levels of retail. For your info. I am also a supervisor within a voluntary organisation so I know how to be a good team leader. A good store/deputy/trading manager is someone who doesn't just point fingers. He either helps out when he can or clearly explains things to people and helps motivate them. Also he is someone that is human and cares as to when employees have concerns and not be ignorant or lie when saying "I will look into it"

3)Training. No massive rant here but it is essential that people be given the adequate amount of training before being responsible for a department. One example is the use of Power Assisted Pump Trucks and Caddy Machines Using the old fashioned equipment (e.g ladders, manual pump trucks) is not a good enough excuse for an employee to get by all the time when the old equipment makes things very dangerous and/or liable to cause injury. More training dates please!


Now to the better things.

Money (Isn't great in general but it is the national living wage for all employees now so it could be worse)

Knowledge- Before working for the company I knew nearly nothing of DIY, now i know quite a fair deal. Part of that mentality though is me wanting to learn more. You get out what you put in! But it is important that you try to learn more so you are helpful

Holidays- 6.6 weeks a year is good going

Breaks- In a full days shift you get 1x 60 min (unpaid) break and 2x 15 min (paid breaks)

About me:
Worked with the company for 2 years, i have worked on checkouts, decor (paint) and Flooring/Tiling

The whole company is poorly managed and we are told we are hear for the greater good of the company and should worship B&Q as if it is a religion. Staff are overworked and exploited with poor pay and working conditions. 

The company cuts costs at every level that you are burden with so much workload. The stores are understaffed and poorly run that it has a negative consequence on the employees in terms of customers complaining and taking out their frustration and shouting at the poor service you give them. 

Everyone has a can't do attitude to work and the moral is really low due to the poor pay, workload, bad management, bad culture and working conditions which ruin your health. Everyone wants to leave and find a better job. But B&Q exploits the weak and vulnerable in society who can't get jobs elsewhere and are stuck and trapped there. 

The management and the company don't care about the workers and treat you like rubbish. I have never worked in a company like this.  

1) 50% of your colleagues are horrible unprofessional people. 
2) Poor pay 50p to £1 above the minimum wage. 
3) Overworked doing 3/4 people's jobs, as the company does not employ people.
4) No training is given so you have not got a clue how to do the job properly. 
5) Short staff in every area of the store. 
6) Management are rubbish and don’t have a clue how to manage people and get the best out of people. 
7) The staff moral is really low 
8) Poor health and safety and working conditions that you end up hurting your back, cutting your fingers, engaging with chemicals with no safety measures 
9) Staff toilets are not clean that you can’t even breathe when you go in there, smells of pooh. 
10) Staff canteen is dirty 
11) No career development, but who wants to work there anywhere. 
11) The exploitation of the weak and vulnerable in society who can’t get jobs elsewhere.
12) Customers who shout and abuse customers because of the poor service they get from the company. 
13) 3 people on the tills when we have 30 checkout machines. 14)  Rude and racist colleagues who don’t like the BAME people. 
15) Cutting corners at all levels that you are impacted in a negative way e.g. trying to advise customers on building material when you don’t have a clue. 
16) Breaks and lunch break can’t taken on the time and at times not be able to take them. 
17) Getting paid overtime is a nightmare, you have to chase them all the time to get them to process it. 
18) Hard to take annual leave because they have limits and if you don’t take them you lose them. 
19) Rotas are poorly done and changed so you get turned away when you are scheduled to work. 
20) Supervisor/Team Leader don’t have clue how to manage and do their jobs properly 
21) everyone hates working there and want to leave and are workshy. 
22) Employees and managers are sleeping around at work with each other on nights and getting dunked and create the work gossips (Christmas is popular time). 
23) Stressed-out employees because of the pressure of work and customer demands. 
24) A lot of workplace politics and gossip leading to conflict and problems at work. 
25) Management and supervisors don’t care about employees or making a good place to work. 
26) I was working so hard and fast and running around like a dog that I lost weight and ruin my health. 
27) No work-life balance slaved to the company. 
28) Management and other colleges are bullies and tend to group upon you. 
29) Working there is a prison sentence and the only goal you will make there is to leave as soon as possible unless you have a screw loose and wish to remain
30) Hundreds of products without correct prices and you have to run like a dog to get the correct price and apologies to the customers while they shout and become frustrated with you because of the time it takes to get the correct price.

Make sure that the customers are assisted no matter what tasks have to be done the customer came first.
Tidy the sections and make sure the products are well and looked after if they are alive.
Arrange prices and displays with new offers and remove the old displays when necessary. 
Answer the call-outs whenever other department call for my department and walk over to get them the prices they need or answer any queries.
My department had 5 sections where I had to work in and help the customers, whether with other team members or if I worked with one other person or alone, have the ability to multi-task and be able to work under-pressure and in different seasons/weathers.
I worked inside and the majority of the time I worked outside looking after the products/ tidying and advising customers and whenever customers needed something from the warehouse I would assist them go there and bring them their orders. 
I would do physical searches for products that the customers require or search online for them and provide other alternatives, or call other local places belonging to the company I worked for and ask them if they have the product that customers is looking for to reserve it. 
My co-workers would be very helpful every person doing their role and being responsible for a section.

I learnt how to work with people from different backgrounds and about team work and also I learnt how vital it is to have good communication and being a responsible person in the role that I or others initially choose to undertake and being efficient in the role to be successful people and as a business. 
I have learnt about many new products and how to work with promotions and displays for the public and how not to loose profit as much and that by keeping all things in the work place registered with data entry procedures including stock counts, all this helps the business to keep track on a daily basis of the finance and know where to focus on and improve.

If the manager was not present at work that would make some situations a bit difficult as the customers required a quick answer that sometimes could only be a Manager's decision. I would take the contact details and handle queries as best as possible to provide a great service as we want happy customers going home and coming back again. 
The hardest part of the job was not having enough members of staff somedays and it would get physically draining trying to get to all sections belonging to my department and assisting all the customers that called for help or doing physical work outside to keep the stock alive and tidy both outside and any indoors as appearance and safety are important in the work place.
Also if there were no other members of staff present to help, I would have to help lifting products or do it alone if some customers needed help and so repetitive lifting was not great for the body, some people can handle that for a certain period.

In addition, if the Manager was not present on some days or working in the offices and I could not have communication or assistance for Manager approvals, then I would try to find another Manager who  would try to help and if not, I would try to solve the customer queries somehow or take their contact details if they where happy to do so. 
I had to undertake even more responsibility whilst working alone or with one other co-worker as my work day involved attending my tasks outdoors, indoors and trying to solve as efficiently any customer queries or solve problems.

I enjoyed working as part of a team especially with the friendly co-workers who would also teach me new things and I would share with new co-workers what I had learnt. I also enjoyed working independently and getting on with my tasks and looking after the stock that was alive, plus knowing that with my advice and help I was making the customers feel understood and pleased with the service given.

B&Q is the worst place I ever worked. Poorly managed by incompetent undeveloped management who don't know how to lead and manage and look after a team of workers. As you have read in other reviews this place is an awful place to work and the good reviews look and feel fake.

I have reduced my working hours since I started working there and now only do 8 Hours have worked hear for over 5 years part-time. B&Q is not a professional company as it made out to by the literature.

Do you like being blamed for things you haven't been trained or told about? How about no work-life balance? What about the awful managers and pointless team briefs? You can do it when you B&Q it.

It's an absolute awful and embarrassing company to work for. The management have no people skills whatsoever and are one of the most laziest and pointless members of staff to have around. Far too many of them for no reason at all and all have different ways of telling you what to follow. Very cliquey, bullyish behaviour and hypocritical. They will constantly give you "informal" warnings over silly things and if you refuse to sign them, threaten you to out of the business. They're fine standing there for hours with a cup of coffee talking and laughing but god forbid you stop working for thirty seconds to talk to a colleague, expect up to 3 managers walk up to you asking what you're doing and why you're talking? In team "meetings" they always bang on about how we're all one family and team and help each other out, but the moment it's about another department it's a their problem?

The training is pretty much non-existent apart from pointless e-learning modules that you won't even remember or even care about after unless you get trained in machinery. (Forklift, paternoster, timber saw, etc) You learn everything from, if you have a decent bunch, your co-workers. Co-workers can be decent grafters and will get stuck in apart from a small amount who always rat on you to managers over issues instead of talking to you about them and resolving them.

Jobs you get can be varied on a day-to-day basis, 99% of the time you'll know what your doing and depending on what mood your manager is in, you'll either get a decent job list or one that takes hours to do and they'll expect it done in 5 minutes and complain why it's not done. Apart from that, it's standard retail stuff. Help decent customers, deal with whiny ones, tidy up your department, etc.

Workplace culture? Abysmal. Everyone talks smack about everyone else but always nice and dandy to their faces. Best keep yourself to yourself and not bother talking to any of them in my personal experience.

Work-life balance? Forget about it. You won't have it, complain about it and managers will stick you on the worst shifts nobody wants (11am-8pm) and they'll timetable you in every single Saturday and Sunday and expect you to deal with it. At my branch alone about 25 people have left in the past 2 months alone because they're sick of how managers are treating them. Managers will always ask you to stay behind after your shift or ask you to do nightshifts but when you refuse because you have a life outside of B&Q, get very attitudey and petty with you. I left the groupchat and the manager got petty with me for about a month after that, even had the audacity to threaten me with a warning because I left the group chat and didn't give a "valid" reason to? Oh and don't forget about rota changing and expect to not get told about it.

Hardest part of the job? Dealing with management. They suck the life out of the place with their pettiness and hypocritical behaviour and you will get depression from just looking at them.

Easiest and most enjoyable part of the job? Meeting decent co-workers and working with them. You have decent people in on your shift? The day is excellent. Have the whingy people in that don't do anything? Expect to be blamed for everything.

A few months ago I would have definately recommended anyone to work here. But for some reason it's massively went downhill. Managers are worse than usual, huge amount of staff turnover because they're sick of their non-supportive managers talking down to them all the time. Everyone is angry, management sucks and it's pretty much department v department, nobody helps each other out. If you care about your mental wellbeing and if you want an actual decent job - stay away. 

First off, ill start with the positives. The actual job itself (the activities on shift etc) is not bad, and the colleagues I work with aside from some of the managers and supervisors and lovely and make the job bareable, amongst the regular staff there is a family like feel and we try our best to support one another and keep spirits up. I have developed skills which may serve well in the future such as running the timber saw, customer service, processing orders for deliveries, learning to use various equipment and systems which require a high level of responsibility. Thats really about it as far as the positives go.

And so the negatives. 
Firstly, if doing more than 30 hours per week, say goodbye to any life you have outside of work. The shift patterns are terrible and designed as if they think their staff have no life at all outside of B and Q. I am mostly working 12pm-9pm with an unpaid lunch hour. Include an hours walking commute in with that and thats an entire 5 days a week totally used on B and Q. My days off will be irregular and as an example, i would finish at 8pm on a Sunday evening, making it home for 9, have the monday off for which most would be sent resting up after working physically hard for the past 4 days, before having to get up at 5am for an early shift on thr tuesday, giving you no chance to actually do anything worthwhile on your days off.

The pay is better than minimum wage but even so they hardly ever get your pay right and often completely forget to pay your overtime, so for example there have been months in which i have worked 80 hours of overtime and on payday only paid my basic wage which is hardly liveable, and so i struggled through until the next payday where SOME of it was added on.

The place is so ridiculously understaffed that often you will be faced with about 5 customers all wanting something at once from you because they cant find anybody else, and the customers are very needy and ask the vaguest of questions that often only a specialist in a certain area would be able to help them with, but good luck finding a member of staff availabke to help, especially managers who spend most of their time in the coffee shop.

Talking of managers, they expect you to do the job of 2 or 3 people most of the time. On my department (building) i will often be the only staff on, and have to run everything on my own in the largest department in the store, and even though 90% of my time will be spent assisting customers, the managers will set an unrealistic list of jobs to do around the department and expect it all done in no time, and its impossible to get done especially when every time you try and complete a task, you are distracted by a customer or a timber cutting call every 2 minutes.

The job is pretty physically tiring if you do it properly, and will burn you out completely if you work full time. However, the sick scheme is pretty awful, 3 sick days within 18 months and you are automatically dismissed. 

The managers never commend you for anything or recognise your effort and dedication, instead only picking out small things that you havn't done or criticising you somehow, there is no feeling of appreciation in this job, and even the hardest working, best members of staff don't really get any proper recognition, they jsut expect you to do more as youvd proven yourself capable. 

To summarise, only take this job if you have no social life to lose, you dont care about your personal time, you like being mispaid regularly and you enjoy being lumbered with unrealistic jobs. If however, you are normal and want to maintain some kind of work/life balance then there is far better out there. Im sure there is far worse too, but for the pay you are on here, its not worth it.

I am leaving in about a month and couldn't be more looking forward to it.

Of course all retail roles can have their downsides, but having worked for two separate B&Q branches between 2019 - now for the most part I consider them to be a good employer that value you and your work, especially in my latest role/store. I've always found the people I've worked with to be pleasant, helpful, and only a few encounters of mean spiritedness.

Manager wise, to be honest it's been a mixed bag over the years, managers have often either been excessive in the jobs they give you, or aren't very organised (it's frustrating when you're more aware of what needs doing than your manager!) and standards across your department slip which leads to more hassle come say, stock take. I've only ever had one manager in my time at B&Q that I would have considered a real problem though, it shocks me the man managed to get to a manager role frankly. In my previous store at least, kissing up to the store manager certainly got you perks.

In my current role on Showrooms, in my current much bigger store, it's far more numbers based than other departments which can be stressful, but I'm grateful to have a manager that while they do remind us of the figures we need, they does it in a way that doesn't feel too pressurised, and doesn't berate us if we don't meet them. My current manager is definitely proof that for every bad manager you find in the company, there's just as many if not more who really do care about their employees and support them.

Rotas can be a bit of a nightmare; there's a lot of variation, mixed bag of late shifts, early shifts, random days off, not too many weekends which again, frustrating but I also understand that's kind of how it is in retail. Do I love it? No. Do I understand it? Yes. Also, while not applicable to me as I have no children or many responsibilities outside of work, I do have colleagues with family commitments, and I've always seen them be accommodated fairly but in a way that doesn't impact the rest of the team too much!

A few things that B&Q have been good at over the past few years are:

- Trying to maintain a wage at least slightly over minimum wage. Again, could the wages be better? Absolutely. But they're definitely on the higher end in the retail job market, and especially the past couple of years there's been more than one payrise a year to compensate somewhat for the cost of living crises.

- Mental health support: I've had a couple of personal incidents that led to my mental health taking a major slip; I wasn't made to feel demonised for taking a few days off to adjust to some new medication one year, and when I had to take a month off after a diagnosis of a panic disorder my manager at the time was the perfect level of checking in without harassing me to return to work sooner than I needed to, and was supportive on my return e.g. even though we were a bit short staffed at the time, I asked for no overtime while I adjusted and he never once tried to bother me into doing any more than my contract until I was well enough again to do so.

- Their COVID response in 2020: In my store at least, management always had your back when customers were causing hassle over the COVID regulations that were put in place, as well as providing copious PPE for us.

Like any retail job, it has its ups and downs, but I do think it's a much more pleasant working environment than any other retail job I've ever had, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a job that feels a bit more involved than other retail roles.

Before applying for B&Q I expected the job to be fun and enjoyable however I was quickly disappointed when starting my first day and have not been impressed since. 
The management is poor and is slow to making easy decisions  which non-managers are not allowed to have input to try and help them as we are 'incompetent' or at-least treated like we know nothing. There is a big divide between managers and full-time staff members for no reason. 

Young staff members are treated like minions and have to do all the work no one else wants to do which do not allow them to grow or learn anything in the business often making them leave the job as they are missable and have no responsibilities. The young staff do not have any say in what they think can be done and often ignored when talking with managers and team leaders which I find rude and arrogant. The managers clearly feel that because they pay us well, 16-18 £8.30 they are allowed to treat us with zero respect and expect us to do a ridiculous amount of work as they pay so well. Older staff members seem to have an easier time as they are expected to do less even though we are employed under the same job title and get payed the same. The treatment to different age groups is clear and obvious as they are given easy jobs and stand around doing nothing. An often phrased used will be 'get so and so to do it they are young and have more energy'.

There is an extreme lack of teaching and training and all staff are thrown in and expected to know a lot about the products already often irritating customers as they feel like they are talking to someone incompetent making them often ask for someone else which hinders learning further. We are told to lie to customers if we do not know about products as it wastes time of other employees which is wrong and gives customers bad impressions. 

Trying to take holiday off is ridiculous unless you book one year in advanced (which you have to do if you are full time this is not an exaggeration) as for some reason two employees cannot overlap a single day on holiday but for some reason it is accepted  for managers to break that rule as they are 'above everyone else' and they act like it. 

Working hours are not a choice they are given and a routine has never been set changing from week to week often without asking the employees permission.  I have never been directly asked to do overtime I just see it on the rota and expected to be able to do it and if I complain or say I cannot, there are often complaints from managers. The hours I have been given to work I have directly told the store I cannot do but it is 'my problem and not theres' and because I am young, I am expected to drop everything and come to work where other workers on the same department seem to get to choice there hours they work because they are friends with the manager causing conflicts and often arguments. I have been given very unsocial-able hours late nights on weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday after numerous talks with managers and team leaders.  

Overall, I have worked at B&Q for a while now and there is no sign of the culture changing anytime soon unless more skilled managers are given the job roles and know how to treat staff correctly, I would not apply for this job role and find somewhere else to work.

Worked for B&Q for six years. It used to be a fun job... Until about a year before the poo hit the fan with the pandemic.
Job used to be entirely about helping the customers with their DIY project needs. But around 18 months/2 years ago, B&Q decided to do away with their in-store Night Crew. This meant that day staff were then responsible for putting deliveries away. This MASSIVELY impacted our normal day. Night Crew had 9 uninterrupted hours to put deliveries away overnight, but with deliveries now coming in at 8am and throughout the day, day staff would be expected to put deliveries away whilst also serving customers. B&Q says on it's new career adverts that "you're not just stacking shelves" but that is a lie. You spend 90% of your day putting deliveries away and helping customers has become a secondary part of the job. Our badges say "Customer Advisor" but more often than not, you are running around putting stock away and customers seem reluctant to ask anything because we are all clearly physically and mentally tired.
Management have their own little mini-groups and if you are not a brown-nose, you won't get anywhere in the Company. If you show even the remotest interest in a management/team leader role, you are made to jump thru so many hoops and "encouraged" onto an apprenticeship scheme. Hard work, experience and dedication ARE NOT rewarded. 
As I say, the job used to be enjoyable, but when B&Q decided they were "an essential retailer" during the pandemic, B&Q became greedy and the job became infinitely worse. Social distancing in-store went out the window when Head Office realised how much money the stores were making. Customers were encouraged to socially-distance themselves in the shop, but this was never really enforced. The definition of what an "essential item" was very stretched. We were told that plumbing and electrical items were clearly essential, but then customers could buy massive bags of compost, house plants, tins of paint etc... Not exactly essential, but definitely the most profitable items. Profit. Profit. Profit.
I used to enjoy my job as Customer Advisor. I used to enjoy helping my customers and seeing the end results of their DIY projects. But over the last 2 years the job stopped being fun. It became all about how much money could we make whilst making the staff work silly shifts (finish at 8pm one day, back in for 6am the next) during the week and have your shifts changed within the week you are in without proper notice. No "work-life" balance whatsoever. Certain members of management get away with subtle bullying that gets waived off as "banter". And good luck trying to get recognition for using your own initiative! The salary, just under £19k on a 39 hour full time contract, is NOT enough for the amount of work you end up doing. Humping and dumping stock around all day is not what the job is meant to be. And if you get a muscle injury due to the weight and amount of stock you are moving around, don't expect anything from B&Q to help you with it.

I'd like to start this review by stating that I am not just another disgruntled sore ex-employee who was fired, or has walked out of the store in Hailstorm of curse words directed at management. I left on good terms because although I had every right to, I would not sink to that hypothetical level which management find joy being on (just so you understand that this is an entirely fair and truthful review based purely on experience.) 
    
The main problem without a doubt is by far the management's; 
*Arrogance, 
*Ignorance, 
*Incompetency,
*Complete disregard for any Employees' well-being, personal property, emotional stress and duress (caused by working at this store in particular, mainly regarding the rotas, sickness and in some extreme cases emotional break downs.)
    
If it wasn't for working under the constant threat of having disciplinary after disciplinary handed to you these working conditions would be made public knowledge, however employees who need the income to support their family or pay their mortgage are essentially trapped within this never ending labyrinth of tyranny (no exaggeration.)
    
The very notion of stability when holding any 'position' at B&Q is beyond a joke, If your knowledge consists of painting and decorating then you are automatically branded an expert at plumbing and expected to advise customers on those isles, or if your experience is more horticultural based you are suddenly bestowed the rank of master Joiner, as the isles are nearby each other and thereby you assume responsibility for both. Ultimately you either seem to be quite literally thrown onto checkouts and left to slowly die, or given 15 jobs by 4 different managers on each department who are all pulling rank on each other constantly like children, the fact that children would be more capable of holding their position would not be entirely untrue.
     
There are alot of honest hard working people just trying to get by in this store, it is both unfair and to be honest outright disgusting how they are subject to bullying tactics by management forcing them into quite frankly impossible working conditions, If there is anybody reading this who find themselves shopping at B&Q Halifax Mini Warehouse, you will notice many faults in the way the store is managed; besides the malfunctioning self-service machines, it truly is a skeleton crew keeping the store open with management only hindering them that much more (unless of course  it is a propaganda filled Bank Holiday of some sort, where the usually absent store manager and his horsemen/horsewomen of the retail apocalypse are stood directly in front of the entrance fake greeting customers just in case the regional director walks in.)
    
To any Employee at Halifax store sat in the canteen reading this review whilst you are searching for a job elsewhere, I wish you the very best of luck, you do not deserve the torture that place puts you through, whether it be week 7 or week 47 on the dictated rotas, there is no excuse for the treatment you are all subject to and I hope you all prosper in your careers, whichever path you choose to take.
