The job itself is fantastic and I should have made the change to work with Enable a long time ago, the People We Support are amazing and have such a joy for life that's infectious!

This has been my first job in the Social Care industry, during the onboarding process, the recruitment team were fantastic and made sure I was kept up to date with all the processes that were involved with me starting. The new recruit training was in depth, well paced and led by people who really knew the job, usually Team Leaders and Personal Assistants who work the front line every day.

When out in the job there's always plenty of support to hand whenever needed through the line managers, senior management and on-call service, so you're never left to deal with any adverse situations on your own. In Social Care, anything can happen, no two days are really ever the same and you get such a sense of pride when you finish your shift that you have made a difference. 

There's always opportunity for both overtime and advancement, and if you're keen and want any of the opportunities going, you're spotted and helped to develop.

The management and senior management are amazing at being supportive through anything that you can be going through, whether that's at work or your home life, someone will always listen and offer any assistance they can. It's always possible to strike a balance with work and home life, and the management help in any way they can with it. 

In my role as an Operations Manager within the ENABLE Works team I can say that no 2 days are ever the same. This is an organisation that fosters creativity, champions innovative practice and leads the way in delivering a high quality service for our clients looking for work.

ENABLE invests in the continuous development of staff at all levels and offers opportunities for progression across the business. Having started my career as an Employment Coordinator in Paisley I progressed to a regional manager before moving to a role external to the organisation in 2016. This experience away from ENABLE allowed me to gain a new perspective and fully value the culture and opportunities that ENABLE offers its staff. As such, I returned to the organisation in 2017 and have never looked back.

Our services are person centered and so is our culture. ENABLE actively encourage ideas, opportunities to challenge each other and strive to provide the best possible services to our clients. As champions of accessibility in the workplace and underrepresented groups, ENABLE is particularly supportive of women returning to the workplace after maternity leave and I have been able to access flexible working, supporting my childcare responsibilities with my career aspirations.

I've worked here for two years. I continually take over from staff who have sat watching TV or on their phones the whole shift as there is nothing done.  No pride in their work. Laziest shower of workers I've ever met. The small core of really  good caring and clever workers are not well thought of and the ones who's only thing that works hard is their mouths are so in with the management that they are quite happy to  leave the load to you. You can't trust anyone and if you make management aware of what's not being done correctly or just not being done and it happens to be concerning a favourite then your working life won't be pleasant.  It's a shame because I really believe this was an amazing business when it was first set up but now there are people that should never be entrusted in vulnerable people's lives. I only stick it as I genuinely like very much the amazing people I support. A hard days work would kill most of the employees here and the lack or respect for people and their homes is frightful. Anyway if you work here you will support some great people but don't expect to be part of the team unless you are lazy, a gossip, inconsiderate and just out to impress the managers then you might get somewhere. On the good side if you want extra work its always available. There are some really lovely genuine people though few and far between. There are really wonderful people needing really wonderful people to support them.

Working for ENABLE Scotland can be a challenging role but a very satisfying one - as is any job in care where the company push to deliver quality support.

Social care can be a difficult sector to work in just given the nature of it, and the fact that it doesn't get the credit it deserves for the commitment and skill front line staff and managers bring to the role and need to do well.

No social care job will ever be perfect and easy, like a task based desk job that doesn't have many implications if you have an off day could be. However, ENABLE Scotland pride themselves on continually assessing what is going well and what isn't and putting the time and effort in to improve things.

The quality of what is delivered to the people we support relies upon the incredible Personal Assistants who deliver that support and the front line managers, Team Facilitators, who support and guide the Personal Assistants whilst being responsible for meeting the actions within the area improvement and development plans.

As with every job there are good parts and bad parts, easy parts and hard parts, parts we love and parts we don't. You get out what you put into this job and if you are a people person who loves to help others and (as cheesy as it sounds) make a meaningful impact on someone's life, then the good parts will always outweigh the bad parts.

Enable Orkney have a mixed reputation. If you are looking for a job that gives you job satisfaction and personal support from management that have empathy and sincerity, who value staff, think again. To be fair not ALL MANAGEMENT are inadequate in understanding the needs and supports of their staff. Some I have come across are willing to listen and give support when needed. This however depends on flip of a coin
In who is your line manager. 
If your are unfortunate, you may get a particular individual who has no empathy, Sincerity and lacks good communication skills, has little or no wish to support staff when they need it the most. 
On call do what they can to avoid going into a service when staff are in desperate need to have another person in support them when a situation or crisis happens. As I said this is not ALL  MANAGEMENT,  but unfortunately I got the short end of the straw. 
The organisation promote the health and well being of their staff but sadly this is only on paper. Having a line manager who does everything to avoid supporting staff while on duty is very apparent. 
Staff health and well being has ultimately suffered and sickness and absence regular occurrence. This is an indignation of the current situation when working in social care. 

The culture is very judgemental and difficult to adapt to. You will be excluded and belittled by coworkers constantly unless you are able to find a way 'in' to their group. 

Management are disorganised at best and harsh, rude and incompetent at worst. On several occassions the instruction given by management only emphasised the distance between the service and how it operated and management. 

Managers spoke, numerous times, very poorly to and of staff members, making inappropriately sarcastic or belittling comments about former employees or using disrespectful language/tone in order to create feelings of inferiority in staff. 

My typical shift pattern was 4/5 12-13hr shifts per week. Upon starting at the organisation you are able to have more flexibility with your schedule, however, unless you are increasing hours this will be hard to change later on if need be.

The hardest part of the job was the genuine lack of support or even proper acknowledgement for physical/psychological issues which come about as a result of either the actual job itself or the culture of the workplace. 

The most enjoyable part was being able to build positive therapeutic relationships with some incredible people under the support of the charity.

The ethos of direct 1 to 1 care and the person forward way of thinking can only be commended. It is a shame that same level of care and thinking is not applied to the staff, unless you are a part of the clique. If you have concerns or see things are not operating the way you have been shown they should, then do not bother bringing this up to management as time and again they will, at best: ignore/sweep things under the carpet, at worst: be confrontational towards you for having pointed something out. The poor work ethic of some managers puts stress on others who actually care about their job, but who then take that extra stress out on the people under and around them. Poor communication within the management team time and time again leads to disorder amongst the workforce and leaves you with a sense that it is the few who are carrying the many. The training is thorough, the majority of people who work on the ground are thoughtful and caring, the people you get to support are amazing and rewarding at the same time. Unfortunately the management  promotes a "keep your head down and mouth shut" culture which makes you feel the higher up you go the less support you have.

Fun fast-paced work environment with amazing colleagues, supporting fantastic staff and services. 
Staff work incredibly hard to support the services. Service Managers and Team Facilitators in Aberdeen and Moray are wonderful to work alongside, and have a great understanding of the services they support. Managers regularly work alongside the frontline staff, on shift and to develop service plans. TF and managers are incredibly dedicated to their role, and work tirelessly to support their staff and services.
Everyone has dealt with lockdown really well, and HO have been very supportive throughout, rising to the challenge in an already complicated and challenging sector. 
The personal assistants have faced a lot of challenges but have really rallied through, and the positive impact on the people they support is very rewarding to see. 
Plenty of opportunities to get involved with, from developing new services to working directly with the people we support. HO are open to new systems and processes, and have adapted to many office staff working from home really well.

Sitting at my desk as I approach Friday, my last day with Enable Scotland and feeling so proud of everything I have achieved in the last 7 year with a wonderful team in Argyll and Bute.
From a sessional worker to PA, to TF in Campbeltown to a TF and Epilepsy trainer in Helensburgh my book closes with Enable tomorrow as I leave to start a new chapter with the Thistle foundation. 
I’ve found myself reflecting this week.
The wonderful people I have supported over the years, 21 wonderful people who’s lives I have made a difference in, and they have also made a difference in mine! The staff whom I have managed over the years who go above and beyond each and every day.
We wouldn’t be able to achieve what we do without your commitment to the people we support. The opportunities I have even given, training, development, travel, visiting places I’ve never been before, all while still making a difference in people’s lives.
My colleagues, my manager...who have supported & guided me. I could definitely not have got to this point in my career without such wonderful, supporting, resilient people around me. Whoever steps into my shoes will be very lucky.
In 7 years I have never had a day where I did not want to go to work.
I will miss each and every one of you in Argyll and Bute, and I wish you all the best.

I work in the social care sector and have done for six months now. This kind of job is not for everyone and anyone who experiences difficulties with long hours,time off ,wages and management should realise that this type of  work is not for them. Dedication and commitment with an understanding of the fact that it is hard and you will be put under pressure and that there is a great need for  good care workers but as I said it is not for everyone. Massive high five to all great care workers out there right now doing the good work,i have respect and admiration for the team I work with as they continue to show me a whole new side of life out there where I am learning everyday. It takes up all of your time because that's just how it is. If you have what it takes go for it. If you think it's an easy way to make money forget it right now because the reality of  that way of thinking will only make your life and the people's lives you are caring for miserable,difficult and ultimately unbearable. Really think about why you are applying for a job like this and ask yourself " Have I got what it takes ?"
