I worked here for about a year before leaving a few months ago and I found serious issues with understaffing, tasks are often left unfinished and are most often left to be completed the next day which creates a cycle of delays and piles up workload. Due to the hourly nature of the rota the work force is stretched very thin as staff often taken off task to go help on the till with busy queues. Despite the addition of self check outs to assist with the queues they have become more of a challenge then actually having a till as customers are reluctant to use the ones in the kids department as it is rarely turned on and staff are often taken out of the department to focus on ladies wear and the one in the ladies department isn’t obviously a self checkout which confuses customers weather they should use it and it is breaks almost daily, enhancing the problems with the queues. Another issue with this location is the popularity of massive online returns. Due to the smaller size of the store and convenient location we are bombarded with returns which again hold up queues which is really stressful to manage as there are only two active tills therefore two members of staff available to serve at all times as well as the push from managers to sign up customers to the member scheme which takes about 5 minutes due to the network and connectivity issues, pushing staff to prioritise getting through the queue as fast as possible, again this has a knock on effect as you are reprimanded for not having signed up enough members. Additionally, the click and collect isn’t convenient for customers as they often have to wait in the long queues to collect their parcels which causes lots of complaints, but as staff there isn’t much you can do about it. It has a lot of issues that need fixing, The staff and managers  are easy to get on with and managers respect availability and have a positive attitude and appreciate how hard the team has to work to keep up with the busy pace of the store and size of the team. If you work here with minimal hours you will find it hard to find items when clearing rail further contributing to issues finding certain items in the store as they will be misplaced by customers and staff who do not know where to find it, due to the fact they need to rush to keep up with the constant rail, workload and stress, aswell as the lack of space for the stock as rails and shelves are often overflowing making it even harder to maintain a tidy stir that’s easy to navigate. Furthermore providing helpful customer service is difficult when you can’t even help find an item as it has been completely misplaced which does not make customers happy to deal with. All of these smaller issues add up creating more problems to deal with. Perhaps a lack of full time staff is also a factor to this problem but cannot be so easily solved as due to the size of the store hiring new employees is rare. Even though the job itself isn’t too difficult all these issues are part of a broader issue with this store and isn’t fair to the staff who work hard and the customers. But not having to wear a uniform is nice. Also the pay does not rise when you turn 18 only when you turn 21. Overall I’d say these a problems are specific to this location and cannot be so easily solved, but having a great team to work with lightens the load and contributes to team morale which is so easily dampened by these problems as people are more inclined to work harder if they can leave on time. I’d say this is a good place to work as your first job even though being thrown in at the deep and can be tough you’ll develop skills to interact and manage all types of customers situations. However I wouldn’t recommend this job for long term if you want peace. Most enjoyable part of the job is definitely the team.

The pros of working at the H&amp;M call centre are that it’s situated in the centre of Edinburgh.

There is a big emphasis on moving up within the business- if this is your goal.

CONS
Pay is rubbish when compared to other call centre jobs or even supermarket work. Pay is around 8.57 an hour for a first line agent. No location pay, which would help out considering the office is in the city centre.
Pay does not reflect depth of role. 
Agents are trained on H&amp;M UK and then you might be placed into another team eg India or US or brands which means you need to take additional training in order to learn processes for H&amp;M for other markets. 
Most agents I knew were trained on at least two markets so you need to know your stuff- not reflected in the rate that’s close to minimum wage. 
Surely H&amp;M, a Swedish company should be implementing the living wage.
Grace time is the five minutes you have at the start and end of your shift in order to get set up/ logged out. 
Five minutes is no where near enough time as the systems are slow and laggy. 5 minutes to read your emails, their internal news posts page, their office social network site (where team news / market updates are posted) 5 minutes is not enough time for this and it’s just cheeky. 
You should be paid from the minute you enter the building. Some people come in 30mins before a shift to get set up and don’t get a thanks for this or any extra pay.
The office is quite dark as it’s on a lower ground floor. 
Constant reshuffling of teams / seating plans because no one of the 100 managers can think of one that works.
 

Management needs an overhaul and so does their entire HR processes.
This call centre is like (what I’d imagine every other one to be like) Filled with cleeks. The management claim to pride themselves on having an “open door policy” yet 75% of them are unapproachable, sauntering about the office like they’ve just came off a runway.
There’s a difference between being liked to be seen as being approachable and being approachable.
Lack of team leaders means that some teams are left months without actual managers so there is a lack of support.
There is a lot of favouritism in the office when it comes to team leaders and managers. I didn’t quite work out if the HR team were complicit in this or if they were just oblivious. 
Every other day a new group of agents are paraded through the office as the call centre seem unable to retain their staff so constantly need to hire new agents.
Parade of new agents is soon followed by a mass culling of other agents.
Big feedback culture at the office, almost to the point of ridiculousness where people end up feedbacking peoples feedback and where does it end.
Strongly believe that if the HR team conducted a review of the office they’d easily be able to work out why people don’t want to stay there.
Awful shift patterns. 
Most staff depressed when they have to work a week of late shifts sometimes mixed  with normal ones so it messes with your sleep.
HR department seem to be ignoring the fact that Edinburgh is a major university city and that there are literally hundreds of students that would happy sign a contract to work just evenings or just weekends.
Management doesn’t seem like they’re keen on improving conditions or morale, yeah pizza is fine but doesn’t really tackle the root cause of why it’s so depressing I to work there.

Attempt to make changes to retain staff, make people want to work there. The rate of pay does not reflect the work load or a decent wage in 2019 it’s awful.

I’m currently employed at a H&M kids store, but I often do overtime in the adult H&M store nearby too. I’ve found the H&M kids store team I work with are absolutely incredible, we all get along and it feels like a family. Everyone is helpful and encouraging and genuinely wants everyone else to succeed, whereas the other store I have worked for does not have that same feel to it. I think it potentially might be because my store is a team of about 20 people, whereas the other store is upwards of 100 employees! 

A typical day in my store consists of tidying the store (e.g, ensuring all the rails are tidy, the tills are tidy, the fitting rooms are kept empty of hangers and rejected clothes when possible), garment caring (e.g, ensuring all the hangers are correct, the item has been zipped/ buttoned/ folded properly), working the tills (e.g, serving customers, keeping sock bins tidy, completing RFID scanning, organising returned items) and clearing rails of new and old stock (allocation and call off). 

My store management team is truly amazing - my store manager is always willing to listen and is always doing her best to give you the time off you ask for, if it isn’t possible she explains why and what your other options are; my department manager is truly top tier and someone I genuinely consider a friend. he goes above and beyond to ensure the whole of his department staff are happy and cared for and always is open to staff swapping shifts etc. Our visual merchandiser is also incredible, offering assistance to everyone in the store, even though it isn’t in her job description to help the sales advisors. 

The hardest part of the job is dealing with customers. People will be rude and condescending and just downright horrible to you. As long as you don’t take it personally, and let management deal with anyone particularly nasty, you’ll get along fine. 8/10 customers are absolutely lovely, and you’ll always have certain customers go above and beyond to make up for the rude customers. 

The workplace culture is very sociable, and very team oriented. In my store, there is a mix of younger and older employees, and everyone gets on, or tries their best too. Obviously you aren’t going to like everybody, but H&M is a very collaborative brand to work for, so you have to be able to put your differences aside. The other store I work for is extremely social and majority of the employees are under 30, so everyone goes out after work together etc. 

On the whole, the job is easy for the money as long as you’re willing to learn. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll fly by. H&M as a company isn’t the best company to work for as the area teams are all focused on money and hitting targets, but the store teams definitely make up for that. As long as you’re respectful, management generally are willing to help you out in any way you can. I have built very good rapport with my managers and can get away with a lot more than other people who haven’t made as much of an effort to get along with them.

A typical day working at H&M depends on the shift you are working that particular day. For example, an early shift generally involves processing deliveries of stock. Once the store opens you may be serving at the till, clearing rails on the shop floor or continuing to process the delivery. A closing shift, on the other hand, will probably involve tidying the shop floor, closing and tidying the fitting rooms as well as serving at the till.

It should be said that if you work a closing shift you never know what time you're finishing which makes it very difficult to make plans for the evening. You may be lucky enough to finish on time but you may also find yourself finishing over two hours later than you were supposed to. This is a particular concern when working on weekends or during the school holidays.

The salary paid at H&M to sales level employees is very poor, especially compared with the salaries of other retailers paid to employees at the equivalent level. You are paid minimum wage for your age group unless you are lucky enough to be promoted to a team leader, visual merchandiser or department manager. The only positive thing I can say about the salary is if you have to stay later to tidy you are paid for every second. You also receive enhanced pay on the very rare occasions that you are required to work unsocial hours (typically between 23:00 and 06:00). 

Your experience with management ultimately depends on the particular store you are working in. Having worked in two different H&M stores, I can say that the management at one store was generally supportive and understanding, whereas the management in a different store were lazy and very rude and passively aggressive towards employees they took a disliking to (favouritism was commonplace). 

As a sales level employee, colleagues and team leaders were, for the most part, very good to work with and highly supportive. It is quite a tight knit group and there were often various social events outside of work. There were, of course, some who didn't pull their weight which sometimes resulted in the rest of us finishing late but this is very much the exception rather than the rule. 

Quite possibly the worst part of working at H&M is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the customers. Customers are often very rude and passively aggressive at the till and will often complain about the charge for a carrier bag like it is all your fault (despite it being a legal requirement). Shoplifting is also a common occurrence. 

Overall I can't say I would recommend working at H&M long term unless you plan to become a store or area manager. Your colleagues are great to work with, along with management depending on the store you're in but given the issues raised regarding the salary and customers I wouldn't recommend sticking around for too long.

A very busy work environment that requires you to work long shifts with either no or a very short break and with rude managers that expect you to do overtime when closing without warning and speak to you in a very patronising way. Till and overall training is very bad but managers expect you to know everything, it is a very trial and error based learning process. The salary in my opinion is not excellent (I’m 18 and get paid 7.40 which I believe isn’t enough for what is expected of me); and due to store being understaffed I am frequently the only staff member on the whole floor leaving me to tidy, clear rails, be on tills and talk to customers which often ends up resulting in certain areas being left messy because one person covering the whole floor does not leave nearly enough time to make sure everything looks presentable for opening the next morning. Shifts vary from 7am to 6.30/7 where I worked, it’s usually the same people on the 7am shifts that are on delivery which I would hate to be on as it is very fast paced and stressful due to there not being enough staff in the delivery room and the managers expecting everything to be done in a short time period. Overall it is a busy and fast paced work environment that requires a lot of different things to you, the coworkers are nice but management is very rude, and lots of people have left in the short time I’ve been there, some without notice who have just left and never come back. There is no set rota so you have no idea what days you’ll be working each week until the rota is up which is annoying as it’s hard to make plans. I also think that management definitely take advantage of the fact that the majority of the staff are young girls and they think they can speak to us in a rude way or expect us to do overtime with no warning. I’ve noticed they also hire young people more as they pay under 21s less money, and that the training is bad because of the people frequently leaving so they don’t bother to properly train you which can be very stressful when you’re new and don’t know what you’re doing. All the other sales advisors talk about it being the retail job theyve had to work the hardest in For the least amount of money, and almost everyone I’ve spoken to dislikes it. If you are a student and are looking for a part time job or something then I do recommend this, but I would never ever work for this company full time as my career and I wouldn’t recommend taking this job too seriously.

I worked at the smaller store in Glasgow city centre and it was a horrible place to work. Having worked in other retail stores similar to H&M this one was by far the worst managed. Rotas would give you shifts out of your availability such as starting at 7am. When I first arrived to the store it was apparent that there were cliches and a lot of the staff were very cold towards me and other new starts. This included people in the management team other than two of them that were quite friendly. They expect new starts to approach customers and managers would constantly come up to you whilst you’re on shop floor and tell you to approach customers whist the staff that have been there for ages sit and have a gab. Often we would have to randomly interrupt customers who were browsing and talk about our members scheme . Often customers would go to tills to pay and there would be no one there. As a new start we aren’t trained in tills until way after so the customer would be left standing there all confused and annoyed whilst a member of staff would finally come over to tills. The lack of training was absolutely shocking, most of the equipment you’re just meant to know how to use but can be complicated. All day you are just going into the fitting room and taking back the stock people have left behind and putting it back on the shop floor.  From the outside this company looks great and it was somewhere I always wanted to work but after 3 shifts I started to feel how dreadful it was. Most people were unwilling to help or would act as managers to new starts telling them what to do. It’s important to note that the music in the store is absolutely dreadful too with the same 12 songs repeated every day- another reason I left. Overall the shifts are annoying because if you were on a contract such as 8 or 12 hours these hours would be made up of 4 hr shifts instead of 8 hrs etc. A lot of the people were cold towards new starts and most people were only working there to pay bills and hated the job. It’s slightly above minimum wage for 18 year olds and that’s about it. Not worth it at all. Also I never got given my discount card which you are able to use from the first shift and I was there for a while. A lot of the people at my particular store were about 25 and I think I was the youngest there. You would think they would be nicer but this wasn’t the case. 

No longer work here, but this was my first real job and after having gone on to other service/retail positions I can't believe I put up with some of it!  Location was always short-staffed, and onboarding and training was the bare minimum- I don't know if they still do this now, but it was a month before I received any training for how to use the very temperamental and outdated till system which was done in one afternoon out of a booklet and left there.  There was a bit of a harsh culture surrounding mistakes-- even just innocent slip-ups like forgetting to sign off on a receipt got you called into the office and told off for a good ten minutes.  I know a lot of people come into these types of roles in high school and college and uni when they have no experience and need a bit of money, but this really undercuts your confidence and I haven't had nearly the same experience in other places, even ones with similar  pressure levels.  Not to mention the massive focus on upselling and loyalty scheme targets-- all the pushiness and pressure of an actual sales role, but none of the actual financial or material incentive to do well, just a cheeky wee bit of emotional blackmail from on high if the customers weren't feeling 10% off a £5.99 belt that day.  I've heard there are other high street jobs that like to do this, so far from a uniquely H&M problem-- but it's obnoxious anywhere you go, both as a member of staff and as a customer, and I really hope this thing of trying to create these pushy high-octane environments goes out of vogue soon.

On the bright side, my department colleagues were really lovely and supportive when I was still learning, and I did meet some really genuinely lovely, talented people.  The employee discount is nice if you're really into H&M clothes since it's quite generous and sometimes there's extra rewards, although the wages aren't that great and some other high street places do pay higher.  You do get to learn a bit about fashion and the industry, which can be fun if you're into that.

Overall, though, I wouldn't work here again given the choice.  It certainly wasn't the worst place to work on Earth but the company culture has a lot of improvement to do.  Like others have said, for a first time or part-time side gig it couldn't hurt, but there are a lot of better options out there, even outside of big cities. 

You may be made to feel welcome and like you’re a part of a family but it’s totally different. There’s no work life balance, management pay is awful so you may aswell stay sales as you get your over time paid for which you’re more than likely to do, where as management don’t but are always expected to work ridiculous long hours and sometimes 6 days a week. Ridiculous expectations from management. Only progress if you’re in with the right people and suck up no matter how hard you work and how much you know. Managers put you forward for things or shifts you have not agreed too especially if you want progression they will make you feel guilty for not accepting overtime and cancelling your own plans. Staff Rotas are meant to be planned 5 weeks in advance so you know your days off and can plan accordingly but these always change up until the day before without you being notified and then you’re made out to be in the wrong if you don’t turn up for a shift you were never in for. Some not all staff and management have awful communication and bullying and backstabbing does go on a lot and it’s never dealt with fairly or properly. It’s always one rule for one and another for someone else. Customers overall can be pretty rude due to sizing which obviously isn’t the staffs fault and anytime a customer calls customer services they will always give them false information about faulty returns and what not which then when you’re following procedure in store with said customer can cause a lot of threats and complaints about yourself. Expected to go meetings every few months which you are told you have to attend unless you have it booked as holiday but you only find out usually the week before when the meeting is so regardless of plans you have to attend or you will get screwed at by management. Country manager also very rude and despite saying to express your own style, if he does not like it you won’t progress in the company ever along with other ridiculous reasons he’s given staff as to why they won’t ever progress. Overall, don’t work here, make friends with someone who unfortunately already does and just use their discount as it’s the only positive.

H&M is a very busy store therefore you are always expected to be doing something productive. It is good in the snese that it makes time go faster however it can be very stressful when it comes to tidying the shop floor and clearing rails at the end of the day. 

I am only on a 8 hour contract so a typical day would be come in the morning before the store is open and clear rails from the day before. After that is finished, due to covid, I might stand at the entrance and count the number of customers in the store or leaving the store. I would then typically work on till untill the end of my shift. If i am working in the afternoon I will typically start my shift on the tills and stay on the till untill it is time to tidy at 16:30 or i might start on the doors followed by the tills and tidy at the end. 

H&M has taught me how to work under pressure as there are often long lines so I know how to remain calm and work efficiently in a stressful environment.

I'd say managment ranges, I used to have a really good store manager who was really hands on and kept us all motivated and the department managers were quite good too. However, they all moved to different stores and my new store manager isn't as hands on and i find it quite hard to get their help on the shop floor. . 

I'd say the hardest part of the job is always having to work really hard and quickly it makes you feel exhausted after every shift and it can be really hard to work to their expectations when your not feeling 100%. 

I think the best part of the job is the discount as we recieve 25% employee discount that can be used in conjuciton with student discount when we have it and they will sometimes give you 50% off one shop up to £200/£250.
They also often run mini competitions between the staff memembers such as who can make the most sales or who can sign up the most h&m members and they give rewards which keeps us more  motivated as we have something to work towards. 
In addition meetings are quite good as they provide food and include games to keep you interested. They will also reward people with small gifts like chocolate or h&m gift vouchers for their work in these meetings.

I like working at H&M as everyday is different. The main things my job role includes are:
- Dealing with daily delivery - have to be on the ball and fast paced as everyday we get a new delivery and all this stock needs to be tagged and put out for the customer before the shop opens.
- Working on the till - have to be fast paced and vigilant as we want to serve the customer as fast as we can so they are not waiting, however every garment will be tagged so they all need to be de-tagged and neatly put into a carrier bag.
- Working on the shop floor - have to be polite, helpful and vigilant. We want the customer to be satisfied with their shopping trip so being polite and helpful will help towards that and helping the customer find the correct garment/size that they want. Have to also be vigilant as we have to watch out for any suspicious behaviour.

The managers at H&M are very understanding and will help out on the shop floor as well as dealing with all their paperwork. My manager is very good on the shop floor and knows exactly what needs to be done and when it needs to be done by. They also will try to accommodate everyone with what time they may need off or certain shifts they cannot do and also with holidays.

The other members of staff at H&M are very friendly, very helpful and the most important thing is that they are all hard workers. When I first started with H&M I found the other members of staff very nice and if ever I felt I couldn't do something or I was struggling with something they were always happy to help as everyone once was new and we all knew what it felt like. 

The hardest part of the job is sometimes the hours can be unsociable and I could be working until 23:00 at Christmas but then back in work at 07:00 the following day. Also the rotas aren't set so I can never really plan to do anything in my free time as the rotas always change.

The most enjoyable part of the job is knowing that if I ever need help with anything I can always ask and I never feel under pressure. Also the 25% discount is also nice as most of my wardrobe is now H&M.
