MITIE

I began working for mitie in January 2014. The promise of great people to work with, good management and a competetive starting salary and also the promise of progression through quality training sounded like an ideal place to work. I left the interview feeling positive. I received a phone call approx two minutes later from the interviewer to say I had been successful in my interview and they offered me a job to begin a week or so later. At the time I was extremely happy to have gotten a job after 4 months of unemployment, now I should have seen it for the warning it was. I will however give the company it's due. The training initially was to a very good standard and was delivered well by an experienced and knowledgeable person, you then got your hands dirty for 3 shifts and learnt by shadowing an experienced, friendly approachable(hand picked by senior management) member of the "Team". You are given a uniform free of charge ( almost free) and told that if you leave then the uniform must be returned exactly the same as what they have on record. I thought that was fair. I signed a zero hour contract after reading it and agreeing. Then signed a waiver to say I am will to work over 48 hours a week again I happily signed again looking back another warning sign. The first couple of months were fine as I was happy working and earning. The job then took me to be trained as a loading agent, a big responsibility ensuring the safe loading of the front of a train with hgvs and vans etc. Also ensuring that the loader is closed and prepared properly ready for departure. This training was delivered by a trained, not particularly experienced or informative personzI learnt more short cuts and safety violations than any real regulations. I did reciebe a booklet to explain as best it could and I was then given a question sheet to complete assissted by a supervisor to ensure you pass. It was laughable as the next day I was on the platform loading lorries and without supervision. The company took a rapid decline the longer I worked for them. The migrant crisis was handled by an incompetent management team. During my time on the folkestone terminal I witnessed a death off a child migrant, I went to the office for after care of traumatic event and got told to man up by a particularly unfriendly duty manger, and to go away and finish my shift off. This day also happened to be my birthday which I had previously booked before even starting the job, this they have to honour, it was not and threats of disciplinary hearing I'd my shift was not for filled. Sorry fully booked, this was the response to  25 seperate holiday dates requests over the space of a year. This was my legal holiday entitlement which I was not being allowed to take. Operational needs was the excuse, whatever that is? So you then turn up for the dates that you wanted and sign in to find out that your not on the sign in sheet and instead you're spare. Which means you can go home and use a holiday day or go home unpaid, you could stay and let someone else take it in your place, this was meant to be fair and done by a chance game of sorts, but it was often given to certain favourites of senior staff members. The shift pattern was mostly 12 hrs and was mostly 6 day weeks nights/days and then you were often rung on your day off to come and cover. If you raised issues you would be discrminated against and put on a random shift pattern knowing full well no one would be able to organise a personal life around. I for example complained to the shift planning person that I need some time off to spend with my children and all I got was I'll see what I can do, only to be put on 6 12hr nightshifts, 1 day off then 6 12 day shifts all beggining at 620 in the morning till apparently 6 at night, it was mostly 7-730pm. This continued for six weeks before I threatened to leave a shift if I didn't get a week off. I came back refreshed and positive it would 've better. It wasn't, no I e in the management team was competent or did they possess one shred of man management skills or compassion for others needs. I stayed with the company due to being in a job role that was paid well and self managed for a while. Before everything again went tots up due to poor managerial choices and the training being forced to be rushed due to a distinct incline and still climbing number of People leaving due to the working hours, conditions, mental abuse by the managers threats, blackmail, favourites etc. The list goes on and on. I ceased working there after an ever increasing decline in the way we were treated. I managed to secure a different type of employment took a huge pay cut and took up an apprenticeship as I wanted a career, a job and that was the one and only benefit from that job, it drove me to choose a proper career. 

I do not wish this to be taken as a bitter employee trying to get revenge. I have left months ago and this job may have changed etc. The reason I am writing this is because I would like a genuine review to be available and a truthful account to be seen on a good job site. The reviews I have seen on here have been written by managment in the mitie office on site and read more like adverts for the company. I would not wish anyone to experience what I have, especially after being duped into belive it is something it isn't.

I want to  be very clear; the job in itself is a very easy job. Each day is entirely different depending which department you're in; some shifts are really easy with barely any work, other days there's 3 people doing a 12 person amount of work and it's completely unpredictable. The hardest part of the job currently is the workload due to staffing levels. Every business is short staffed right now, but operators here can have the option to work from home if they have circumstances that require it.

 The operators that do nothing in here are dragging the business down, as management haven't done anything about it, the hard working operators are sick of carrying the team, the assistant managers (well most of them) have to do the work of a manager and an operator so some of them do more work than anyone. The actual managers are 50/50, some of them hold this entire building together and are the go to guys to fix any issue for team members, other managers just throw their weight around, do no work, follow higher up people in the company to brown-nose their way up the chain and are just not suited for the role, regardless of their knowledge of security laws.

 Management have unrealistic expectations thrust upon them and are told to look after the stats, but very few of them are even trained to manage people, let alone able to do so. There are far too many contracts, Mitie have made it abundantly clear that they only care about making money, even lying to some of their clients about staffing levels. They take on more and more contracts and seem to be losing more and more staff, so the work load is really ridiculous for operators in the ARC, which means that managers have to help with the work load whilst being on top of things in the background. If we could get 30 more bodies in this building to flesh out the roles to their maximum capacity, this place would be a dream.
 We are losing good operators because the lazy operators have managed to get away with being lazy from day 1 and no amount of complaints to management have ever made a difference, but when a good operator has an issue they are pulled and booked and monitored. It is unfair that the operators are quite horrible to management about issues the have no control over; they have no impact on pay (and our overtime pay has just had a massive increase to encourage people to come in and give each team some relief), they cannot just pluck staff out of thin air either. What they CAN do however is start dealing with the dead weight on the teams, every team has at least 1. Until we see those people dealt with, we are going to continue to lose hard workers, because the hard workers are absolutely bang on the money when they ask why they should bust their chops the whole shift but some people sit on clerical, spend more time off their seat than in it and scroll through shopping sites instead of quickly deal with alarms that they need to be told to pick up?
 This company used to be great, and quite difficult to get into, and the pay gap used to be way higher than minimum wage, but with minimum wage leaping up and our wage just going up a small amount to just be technically higher than minimum wage, it's just not a competitive salary anymore. And we see some horrifying ordeals on CCTV, the client can be difficult and really uncooperative and the days are 12 hours at a time. If they can waste thousands and thousands of pounds to put a fake sky on our ceilings (oh yeah, we don't have windows! They love saying that we are bomb proof but we are on the second floor, if a bomb is planted downstairs we are no safer sans windows) then they can put the wage up for us.

 Mitie offer 4 on 4 off shifts, some departments offer Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and many operators have chosen permanent dayshifts or permanent nightshifts. We are also paid for our breaks. Those on a 4 on 4 off rotation technically only work half the year plus we get 20 days holidays on top of that. It's ideal for people who don't have young children. It's 12 hour days but it really doesn't feel like 12 hours when your in here. The downside in winter especially is that it's dark when you go to work and dark when you leave, regardless if you're on dayshift or nightshift. You don't get much of a social life or anything done on your 4 days in work unless you can run on next to no sleep.

To summarise, the place has a lot of problems that need fixing, and these issues can be fixed, we just need the people who run the show to sit down and really hear us and what we are saying, we get brushed off quite often but the uproar about pay has been heard and all over time shifts are now roughly an extra £5 an hour. We just need more people to take the pressure off the skeleton crew that we currently have.

Former employee worked as a response driver, the vehicles were poorly maintained, people fill out check sheets without actually checking anything. My vehicle when I started was low on all fluids, spitting out oil, when I reported it, was told it would get sorted. vehicle eventually broke down, was able to limp to base. replacement vehicle was also low on fluids, and half the front lights were out.
Constant alarm call outs so no breaks, and no support with core jobs. You can be say in Stevenage and suddenly have to travel the way to Borehamwood or where-ever, sometimes you would get to an alarm and the information would be out of date so you cant do anything anyway, when you raise this with management, they say its too expensive to follow up. Just makes the company look very unprofessional. You are expected to take a call at 6-6:30am knowing its going to take you over your time - just to get there let alone back again, and half the time staff are already on site when you arrive.
You're expected to use your own initiave, but when you do you are questioned about it,and have to explain yourself- no or little support from management. If you hurt yourself or they care about is if you have to take time off. Big company but no relief staff for holidays so manger has to do it, and makes it seem like a favour. Had two punctures one in each vehicle, changed them both myself, the second one it was raining and I had to take all the stuff ot of the back off the van because the board over the spare was screwed down in place - lucky I carry tools in my go-bag.
One client called everyday to check if you were going to do the scheduled patrols that night - I found this both annoying and insulting, no where else have I worked where some-one calls you to see if are going to do the job you are being paid to do. And if for any reason, which I had two ocassions of, you can't, because of alarms which take priority - they are not very understanding,and the area managers are no help as they are to far away, or just dont care.
I left because I was having spells off tiredness behind the wheell, and had some near misses, I have no regrets, I am still alive, my children still have a dad, and quite possibly, another family still has their loved one too.
workplace culture - poor unsupportive management, friendly work colleagues when on site.
hardest part of job - travelling potential long dinstances to alarm activations, speed cameras, poorly maintained vehicles, and incorrect outdated information.
Most enjoyable part of the job - pretty much being your own boss, even though you have to answer for any decision you make outside of the box.

It is only now, months after I left Mitie that I fully realise just how bad it was there. There is a culture of going along with bad practices until the rules put in place to protect Mitie (just like with any company that is owned by shareholders) are so disregarded that it is scary. For example, in some places at Mitie the processes put in place meant to be a check on payments is nothing but a sham. When a person calls this out they get told that it does not matter and that nobody looks at the documents that are supposed to be a check on the payments. So those documents are just done for the sake of appearances, the manager that approves payments is approving them knowing full well that the check their team has done is meaningless. In fact that same manager directed their team to do only that, nobody cares so why should the manger, right?
It is only now after I left that I can acknowledge to myself that this is fraud, fraud is when someone knowingly passes off something as what it is not. It is horrendous to work in such a place when you have good standards and are conscientious, because it is very hard not to intervene to undo the harm being done by other people!
 Standards have been allowed to erode and that is seen by certain bad managers and then those bad managers don't see why they should bother, so standards erode some more, over time managers find they don't have to worry at all and can pass off a mere pretence as the work that they are paid to do. At the back of their mind they know that it takes a lot for anybody to question anything and even then there is always the option to blame someone else! They have already been blaming each other in their pretend work they do and got away with that! 
With making payments there should be checks done, to protect Mitie but some types of payments the checks are more crucial than others. With some I suppose that if one month too little is paid, the next month too much, over a long time it may work out????

Thank God I am out of there, it is so good to be free from the horrible managers that infest the place with their utter ineptitude and disregard for anything except themselves. Good luck to the good people there, they exist. I pity them.


I am currently working at Vodafone VPS, Didsbury as a Receptionist/Facilities Co-coordinator, my main daily responsibilities include receiving calls from Business Partners or their customers and directing their calls to the correct team, dealing with visitors, couriers and the postman at site in a polite and friendly manner, competing daily check’s for H&S and maintenance, logging any issues and monitoring the repair. Replenishment of stationery and cleaning supplies and when necessary re-ordering within budget. I am also apart of the team supporting the security management of the building 

I am responsible for creating and maintaining a training program, accompanying guide and training for new staff joining the reception/facilities team at Vodafone Didsbury.

I created and implemented a car parking process for Vodafone VPS, which including liaising with the Marketing team to work within branded guide lines. When creating documents, to send out to visitors helping visitors.

Since joining Vodafone, Didsbury, one of the aspects was to established and maintain a  business relationship with the Landlord/Site Facilities and Security Team at Towers Business Park and to attend the quarterly facilities meetings  

While working with MITIE FM I have completed a St Johns ambulance First Aider course and also hold an SIA License in security guarding

As on site there is small team of 5, it is imperative that we all work together and ensure that all aspects of facilities are completed well and within time scale

The challenges the Reception/Facilities Team have on a regular basis are to remain calm, polite and helpful when receiving disgruntled callers or visitors to reception.  

The best part of my job at Vodafone, Didsbury is when I, with the help form the Facilities Team organise an event at site, which includes meeting rooms with buffets and sweets or when Vodafone approved companies, attend site to promot their new telecoms products.

I regularly log incidents and crime reports using internal systems, carry out compliance and safety checks, and communicate closely with managers, store teams, and the public. The role combines customer service with security awareness, so professionalism and strong communication skills are key throughout the day.

A fine place to work for the uninspired and under qualified.

Mitie is a strange place, they do not pay what they should for engineers and supervisors which leads to allot of deadwood floating around at the company. To quote a Mitie account director "its better to have deadwood to send to a job than nobody"

Their attitude is no body matters, despite what they say in the constant cooperate cringe items they send out and how many times they call it a family they do not care. A prime example of this is calling all our people working in hospitals front line heros, not all heroes wear capes etc but when allot of them got COVID working in these areas as heroes, a few of which died. Did Mitie pay their "heroes" full sick pay? Did they heck!

Mitie then gave allot of people a 10% pay cut with no consultation period, no agreement to a temp change in terms as the law states they should, they just do what they like and if you don't like it you can leave. Allot of people could not afford a pay cut during this period but still they did it. 

They got a pot of money from the share holders to buy Interserve, did they ask for a little more to pay back their employees who had took a pay cut and have worked their fingers to the bone during that time? haha of course they didn't! The CEO took a 30% cut, down to £1.54mi hope he's OK and managing OK on that cut.

Id say its all about the profit for them but i am not sure they are making any.

There is people who think Mitie are amazing and will disagree with what i am saying to those people i say. You are the people who are professionally undeveloped and/or inexperienced and only work at Mitie because most other companies wouldn't employee them in their role. 

£274 million on Interserve but no with inflation pay rise for all us front line heroes. 

I've been here 3 years now like with anyone decent its time to move on from Mitie, its been a nice stop gap.

A typical day consistent of an early shift starting  about 08:00, but we had to get everything ready for the day. This involved opening up the test bays and bringing out the PCR test kits, this took about 10 minutes to undertake.

We operated on a two shift pattern, the late shift starting at 08:30.

The actual working day, we would be testing members of the public for COVID, roles varied from meet and greet, asking if they had pre registered for the test, if not we took them through the registration process or explained how to do it at home either online or via phone. 

The actual testing, we would explain the procedure, maintaining a distance, complying with the guidelines. Recording the number of tests handed out and returned.

The hardest part of the job involved either young children, the procedure was quite invasive as it involved taking a swab from the throat and nose, some children got upset with this, relying on the parents to do for them. 

And also I dealt with people, whose first language was not English. In this case, I had to take my time in explaining and demonstrating the process, sometimes we had a whole family turn up and it was important not to get the test kits mixed up - to maintain a chain of custody.

The workplace culture, depended on how busy we would get, should there be a spike in COVID otherwise it was quite relaxed, working 30 minutes on and 30 minutes off, so effectively we were working a 6 hour shift and getting paid for 12 hours. Also there was plenty of overtime available. The most enjoyable part was the shift pattern 4 days on 4 off.

I learnt how to deal with people from different backgrounds, as never worked in a customer facing role before the pandemic. The management were largely supportive 

Gave up a perfectly stable job with reasonable management (You don't have the benefit of hindsight) to return to work for a past employer and contract but within Mitie.  Turned up on time got on with my job but was unfortunate to work with jobsworths whom actually hated each other but decided that because I was new in their eyes even though I knew already what I was doing they would attempt to put me in my place through insidious bullying and abrupt treatment/isolated bullying tactics. Stood up to these certain issues (Brought it to attention in a kindly manner with people involved) and when issues persisted brought it up with relevant management. Never had issues previous my last jobs and regretted the way the whole episode was handled. Never even saw the area manager who couldn't be bothered to even meet and greet to welcome me on board-fine. I know I'm just a number...but a little humane friendly interaction welcome wouldn't have gone amiss. Ended up hounded out of a job I was more than capable of doing (Hence why I was brought back after working there last time) Decided to resign after further bad treatment and being deliberately left off the working timetable by a supervisor whom was mates with the people doing the bullying and whom actually became part of the problem! Left ultimately after losing confidence in the company to sort out the issues properly and putting these people in their place at the very beginning. If your face doesn't fit...

My experience with this company leads me to say...Don't bother...there are companies out there that will pay around the same and you will get treated better

The nature of the job is that you may be in a position to protect or save a life. There seems to be no awareness of that from the management side however. Training is horrendous, ad-hoc and there is no system whatsoever in place to verify what you have been shown or if you have learned it. 
The company works for leading companies that are household names you would have heard of. However if any of them knew how the place was run they would cancel their contracts immediately. 
Very stressful to be responding to distress life-alerts without being given more than a few words training in what to do if you need to contact and direct emergency services. There should be no margin for error in the quality of training. Everything is run in a very amateurish fashion.
Systems throughout are ill designed, out of date and illogical. No ownership of procedures, no evolution or improvement. Info you need is spread out all over the place, it's as if the whole thing was designed to be as fiddly, time comsuming and unhelpful as possible.
Poor safety procedures in place all over covid. Towels, wipes and disinfectant often out of stock. No one regularly cleaning door handles or door buzzers. No one seemed to have responsibility for this.
Some teams sit and do no work for hours as their contract is a quiet one where alerts rarely happen. The person sitting beside them is in a different contract and is flat out all the time. Same wage.
This company does not pay extra for unsociable hours. Working all night? You get no extra than the day workers. Unreal.
Managers just drift around all day, unable or unwilling to improve things and implement change.
