The Body Shop

My experience at The Body Shop was a lot of fun and hard work. I had to be on top form at all times and meet the requirements. I had to deliver 15 steps to every customer, making sure I contributed to the customer's needs and offer any advice. I had daily targets to meet and had to do as much as I could to achieve the highest possible results. I have successfully supported my team with thriving energy and enthusiasm.I strive for continued excellence in all areas of retail and I am very eager to complete my journey in improving sales and daily targets.

I learned a lot about each Body Shop product and what they do to benefit the skin and body. I had to remember where each product came from and which product would work the best. More importantly I learned very high standards of customer service. How to approach the public and how to offer our best advice was always something I thrived in. My friendly and polite manner always seemed to make customers more eager to buy and feel welcome.

Management at The Body Shop was excellent. The team all had a lot of respect for the managers as they were the ones that drove us to success on tough days. The training and skills were taught in such a fun and professional way. They always gave me feedback after every shift which would boost my confidence for the next shift. Re-assurance is the way forward in a busy retail atmosphere and without their commitment the shop wouldn't have been the same.

My co-workers were wonderful to work with and I made some lovely friends at my time with The Body Shop. We all had to work as a team and we always helped one another out when times were busy and difficult. We all had different strengths and weaknesses however we always tried our best to achieve top results. I still keep in contact with several members of staff.

The hardest part of the job in my opinion was "lease-lining". This was an activity that took part outside of the shop. It was a way to lure customers in and buy our products. I didn't want to sound like I was pressuring the public to come in and spend their money, I wanted them to experiment a casual, stress-free shopping experience. I never failed to try and succeed and gave it my absolute all to try and boost targets.

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the job. Working with the public is always a refreshing job and gives you the chance to deliver your knowledge and advice. I loved being able to pamper a customer and make he or she feel good about themselves. Seeing someone leave the shop with a smile because of my assistance always made me feel very rewarding.

I was Employed at The Body Shop as a skincare expert which was a new role and full-time.I was told i was going to get all this amazing training from management which i never received in fact i was pretty much thrown in the deep end and learnt everything from the other girls who were all amazing i will add! (only good thing about the place!)

 I was sent to another store for training on products and my job role etc which i found helpful but when i was placed back in my store it just went downhill from there! had all these targets to meet and if you didn't hit them you got a telling off and they were constantly on your back about everything i was never left to just enjoy my job i was constantly being asked have you spoke to those people?! after a while i found this extremely annoying that i was being asked if i was doing my job which i had always done and greeted every customer who walked into store!! it just made me hate my job in the end and i dreaded every shift! 

The rotas were never fair everyone else bar management were made to work all weekends and bank holidays whilst they always had them off.Everyone was also getting told not to have phones out of lockers yet management would sit in the office on them all day.Just one rule for them another for us! The whole place was just a shambles! i have never worked anywhere as bad as there where you were made to feel like you was just a number! whats worse is that after my 3 month probation period i was then told i hadn't hit targets as well as i should of and that i wouldn't be kept on yet i still hadn't had any of the training i was promised when i started! so how is that fair?! being told your not doing your job properly yet you've received no training in store what so ever! you just had to nag management to do everything and even then things were never done.The whole experience has put me off retail for life and literally everyone i worked there with all left within weeks of eachother..says it all really!

I worked at the Bridlesmith Gate store in Nottingham and absolutely hated it. I was treated like a disposable nothing by the permanent staff who were already there. Staff of the same level as me would get me to do all their work while they stood around chatting. If I spent even a second talking to another member of staff they'd discipline me even though all they did was chat and mess around. One particular time I remember shocking me was one of them being asked by a customer to get something from the stock room. She was doing nothing but standing around, but clearly couldn't be bothered to go, so she interrupted a conversation between a temp and a customer to ask if the temp would go, but didn't take over for the temp with the customer, so the customer looked confused and not impressed before leaving. Quite often customers would come up to me and ask me a question, at which point the permanent staff would interrupt by stepping in and answering for me before I've breathed a word, and lead the customer away from me. Completely insulting. They would even gossip and say awful things about the other temps while around customers. I would watch the customers' reactions and they were never impressed and sometimes walked out. They had no respect, it was all incredibly and pathetically unprofessional. The whole experience was upsetting and I've been put off from even shopping there anymore. This was not a situation where I have a problem with authority or that I have a difficult personality - I'm a lovely person! The staff are just simply rude and sometimes very cruel. If you're considering applying for a job at this particular store, just don't. They may seem friendly and fun at interview stage, but once you're in you'll be leaving work feeling miserable and vulnerable.

With The Body shop you have to literally pressurise customers into buying things, it's not about the service it's purely based on the money. 

With their ethics and values, they are not promoted enough and who even knows what's going on anymore with them? They use about one actual fair trade/natural ingredient in there products and they're full of preservatives.

At the Castleford outlet you are supposed to promote the discounts, I was fully bullied by the manager there and so was the rest of my team. Honestly everyone has left. As a manager they did not treat the team members like people, but instead as children. The manager loved having the authority and the amount of time me and my team members were brought into the back for the most pathetic excuse like ''Why didnt you stay with that customer? They have to buy 4 times, you can't let them leave'' the amount of times we cried whilst having a one-to-one or a briefing, it was ridiculous. The fact the area manager didn't pick up on the attitude of the store manager or do anything about it is beyond me. 

Additionally, there were incentives but these were so hard to achieve nobody ever got them and if we did win something they were broken/damaged or old testers. As a leaving present I received a leaking 750ml shower gel which was damaged and other used products. This is mainly directed at the bad management but as a company The body shop do not look after the members of their team and since they are owned by L'oreal it's so money orientated rather than giving good customer experience. 

I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone especially at the Castleford Outlet. 

Also the hours I did some days I did 9-8.30pm but wouldnt get paid the extra half an hour and was expected to stay until the store look ''ready''

My typical day at the Body Shop was to help deal with customers in a friendly approachable manner and take interest in their problems and try to find the best way to deal with them. I also spent some of my time cleaning the shop floor and making sure it was kept presentable and tidy for customers browsing the shop floor. I also spent some of my time in the stock room arranging stock and informing the Manager if there was ever a need for a new order of stock to be placed. I learned at my time at the Body Shop, how to deal with customers and what is the correct way to approach a customer and deal with their problems whatever the situation may be.
My co-workers were always there to help me with any sort of problem i may come across whether it be dealing with a difficult customer or needing an extra hand in organizing stock within the stock room.
The hardest part of the job had to be the organization of the stock room, as there was plenty of stock in need of being arranged and the size of the stock room did not allow much room to move around forcing me to have to use other methods of organizing within the stock room such as stacking until there was enough room for the stock to be organized safely and neatly.
The most enjoyable part of my job was getting to deal with customers and helping them solve their problems and suggesting other products to the customer in which they could possibly be interested in, as well as serving the customer and ensuring a helping hand whenever one may be needed, as well as ensuring them a pleasant day.

Overall I would recommend working at The Body Shop, the job comes with lots of benefits like a generous staff discount and free product samples. The pay was good, especially compared to other similar companies. 
Being a customer consultant involved your standard beauty retail fare, greeting customers, recommending products etc. You are encouraged to up-sell but they don’t want you to aggressively sell as much as possible like other companies. You are expected to approach customers and offer product demos, which I occasionally found a bit awkward but if you’re a confident or outgoing person it would be easier for you.
As a team lead, which is just a supervisor, you are responsible for opening/closing, counting tills, banking etc. You’re also responsible for processing returns and doing basic admin tasks like writing the day’s sales targets. As the name implies you’ll also look after your team and make sure everyone knows what they’re doing.
As with any retail environment you will get nasty customers and very hectic busy periods, especially around Mother’s Day, Christmas etc. Trying to meet sales targets was sometimes stressful, especially in relation to loyalty card sign ups.
The Belfast team were great to work with, especially the store manager. Management can make or break a work environment but my manager was fantastic and the whole team worked well together. 

I was really unhappy at this job. It has taken a new job to realise that the workplace is toxic and there is bullying courtesy of the store manager and assistant store manager. I cried weekly because of the behaviour and I was always so stressed. The KPI targets were constantly checked and I spent most of my day constantly checking the till. Even if the KPIs were met (which was almost always) you’d still be in trouble as it was still not enough. You’d always leave feeling stressed about what you’d get in trouble with the next day. Then you’d be met with ‘explain yourself but don’t give me excuses’. It made you feel very belittled and like you were being treated like a child. 

The company itself is good as there is a lot of free products, discounts and activism. The higher ups always kept us informed of new products and company incentives. The company promoted well being. However, I was unaware of how to report the issues with the store manager. I do believe that this would be a great company to work for if there was different management.

The staff turnover is incredibly high because of the toxic nature of the workplace. Many times staff would message other staff for reassurance and give bigger sales to other staff if their KPIs were lower so there was less chance of getting in trouble. 

You are required to arrive 10 minutes early or given a late warning even though this isn’t in the company policy. 

A typical day working for The Body Shop normally starts with an in depth briefing from my line manager, relating to progress made with weekly/quarterly targets, there is always a focus on areas that could benefit from attention to detail, as a top 50 store there are high expectations for myself and my team. Action plans are often set out between myself, my Deputy Manager and Manager so we can focus on motivating our team to achieve. A positive and proactive approach to customer service is promoted at all times by myself and the rest of the management team, customer experience is paramount.

I feel during my time with The Body Shop the most important thing i have learned is how customer experience can have a dramatic effect on customer loyalty. As a store, as well as encouraging the loyalty of new customers through sales of our Love Your Body customer reward card scheme, we are also keen to retain customers who have been brand loyal to us through the years with fantastic quality products and competitive offers.

The hardest part of my job as i'm sure many will say who have enjoyed a career in retail over the years, Christmas! An exhausting time of year but often the most enjoyable!

The most enjoyable part of my job has to be when you have spent the time with a customer listening to their needs and advising them and they come back a few weeks later to say thank you and tell you how your recommendations have helped them.

My experience at The Body Shop was a blend of highs and lows. On the positive side, I had the pleasure of working with an incredible team of supportive and motivating colleagues. They inspired me to strive toward sales targets, and their energy made the work environment more enjoyable. The company’s B-Corp ethics and commitment to sustainability resonated deeply with me, fostering a genuine love for the products and the brand. Extensive product training made me feel confident in assisting customers, and the perk of regularly receiving free products was a great bonus.

However, the experience was significantly tainted by management issues. While sales targets are a standard part of retail, they often felt unrealistic, particularly on slow days with very few customers coming through the door. As an autistic staff member, I struggled with how management handled challenges, often feeling belittled and blamed for broader team performance. Their tendency to focus on minor issues and escalate them unnecessarily created a stressful and emotionally draining atmosphere. This lack of understanding and support left me feeling undervalued and, on several occasions, resulting in going home crying after shifts.

While the team and brand were strong positives, the management approach overshadowed these benefits, making my time there more difficult than it needed to be.

From the moment you come out of your 2 wk training you are set up to fail.
You are expected to achieve unreachable targets and you are constantly reminded of how poor you are doing during the day (apart from a rare occasion that you reach your kpi).
Management will only talk with their friends and their nationality - so if you are English then you will never come out on top.
The job is very fast paced in parts and then not with standing on the same spot for 7.5 hrs.
There is no teamwork as you are not allowed to talk with your colleagues but you can constantly listen to management laughing out loud and having fun.
Certain jobs are easy but unavailable to you if you are not a favourite or a friend.
The hardest part of the job is trying your best, working flat out only to have your hard work and enthusiasm crushed multiple times during your working day.
The morale is so flat and your mood drops as soon as you walk in the day.
We all deterr our friends and family to not work here.
You are constantly only working 2-4 days per wk as they are severely over staffed, and again, if your face fits then you work maximum hours.
