About the Role
This role is suitable for an experienced automotive professional who can diagnose complex vehicle faults, carry out repairs, and support the safe and efficient operation of customer vehicles.
You will work closely with service advisers, technicians, parts teams, workshop colleagues, and customers to identify mechanical and electrical problems accurately and ensure repairs are completed to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out diagnostic testing on cars and light commercial vehicles.
- Identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults using diagnostic equipment.
- Perform scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance.
- Repair and replace defective mechanical and electrical components.
- Diagnose engine-management and warning-light faults.
- Investigate braking, steering, suspension, and drivetrain problems.
- Test batteries, charging systems, and starting systems.
- Conduct vehicle safety inspections before and after repairs.
- Carry out road tests where required to confirm faults and completed repairs.
- Use manufacturer and technical information to support fault diagnosis.
- Record diagnostic results and completed repair work accurately.
- Provide clear technical information to service advisers and workshop colleagues.
- Identify additional maintenance requirements during inspections.
- Support tyre, wheel, alignment, and suspension-related diagnostic work.
- Maintain and calibrate diagnostic tools and workshop equipment.
- Follow manufacturer procedures and approved repair methods.
- Maintain accurate job cards and workshop documentation.
- Ensure all work complies with health and safety requirements.
- Assist less experienced technicians with complex diagnostic problems when appropriate.
- Keep technical knowledge current as vehicle systems and technologies develop.
What We Are Looking For
- At least 2–4 years of experience as a vehicle technician, automotive technician, mechanic, or diagnostic technician.
- A Level 3 NVQ, City and Guilds, or equivalent qualification in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair is preferred.
- Practical experience diagnosing mechanical and electrical vehicle faults.
- Confidence using modern diagnostic scanners and workshop testing equipment.
- Good understanding of petrol and diesel engine systems.
- Knowledge of braking, suspension, steering, and drivetrain systems.
- Ability to interpret diagnostic trouble codes and technical information.
- Strong mechanical and technical problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to safe workmanship.
- Ability to manage several repair jobs and workshop deadlines.
- Strong communication skills when explaining technical findings.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop team.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- A valid UK driving licence is preferred.
Preferred Skills
- MOT Tester qualification.
- Experience diagnosing hybrid or electric vehicles.
- EV or hybrid vehicle certification.
- Experience with manufacturer-specific diagnostic platforms.
- Knowledge of advanced driver-assistance systems.
- Experience with wheel alignment and suspension diagnostics.
- Familiarity with tyre-pressure monitoring systems.
- Understanding of CAN bus and modern vehicle electronics.
- Experience working within an independent garage, dealership, or automotive service centre.
- Air-conditioning servicing certification.
- Additional manufacturer or automotive diagnostic training.

Pay: £2,900.00-£3,200.00 per month
