Right across infrastructure, there’s a requirement to not only maintain, but also renew and reimagine. Whatever stage you’re at in your career, with us you’ll have an opportunity to grow and develop. Delivering essential infrastructure services for life, while being safety first, and client and customer centric in a friendly, fun and respectful environment where you are encouraged to thrive.
We’re looking for a "Trainee Traffic Maintenance Engineer" to join our Traffic Signals maintenance team, supporting the maintenance, fault-finding and repair of traffic signalling equipment (Traffic Lights / Traffic Lighting systems) across key locations including the A3 contract area, M4 corridor from Swindon to London, Botley Interchange, High Wycombe, Reading, Southampton and Wiltshire areas.
This is a field-based. outdoor, TRAINEE role where you’ll work as part of a supportive team of existing engineers, learning on the job while helping to maintain critical traffic infrastructure. The role is "maintenance-focused" rather than installation-focused, and you will not be expected to cover the full area alone - you will be supported by Senior Traffic Engineers.
This is a full-time, permanent role, that will see you work 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. FULL UK drivers license required and ability to complete and pass a Drugs & Alcohol test.
What you’ll do:
- Support the maintenance, testing, fault-finding and repair of traffic signals / traffic signalling units / traffic lights and associated electrical equipment such as controllers.
- Work closely with experienced Traffic Engineers, gaining practical, hands-on training in a live field environment.
- Learn how to troubleshoot faults and follow fault-finding instructions / manuals to resolve issues safely and effectively.
- Support maintenance activity across key customer locations (planned and reactive maintenance).
- Develop your knowledge of highways electrical maintenance, with opportunities to work towards relevant sector-based training and qualifications.
- Work outdoors in a range of weather conditions, supporting the delivery of safe and reliable traffic signalling infrastructure.
Who you are:
You’ll be someone who enjoys practical, hands-on work and is keen to build a career in traffic signalling. This is the perfect opportunity for someone with existing, junior-level experience in wiring, cabling, fibre, lighting, highways, temporary traffic signals, BT-style field work or a similar outdoor technical environment, although your attitude, willingness to learn and ability to pick things up quickly will be just as important.
You’ll be comfortable working outdoors, happy with physical work, and motivated to learn from experienced engineers as part of a supportive team.
Key Requirements:
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willing and able to complete Drugs & Alcohol test as part of the role requirements.
- Have an interest in hands-on, outdoor technical work, ideally with some experience in wiring, cabling, lighting, fibre, highways, temporary traffic signals or a similar environment.
- Willingness to learn, take direction and develop new practical skills in a field-based maintenance role.
- Comfortable working in a range of weather conditions and supporting physically active work.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with colleagues, customers and wider stakeholders.
