Cook/Chef - Week days and weekends.
1 x 20 hours per week
1 x 30 hours per week
About the role
We are looking for a Chef/Cook who takes pride in creating nutritious, appealing and homely food for our residents.
This is more than a kitchen role. The food you prepare will contribute directly to our residents’ health, wellbeing, enjoyment and quality of life. You will play an important part in making mealtimes something our residents look forward to.
Working within our nursing home, you will prepare fresh, well-balanced meals that reflect individual preferences, dietary requirements and nutritional needs. You will work closely with care staff and the wider team to ensure every resident receives food that is safe, appropriate and enjoyable.
What success looks like
In this role, your success will be measured by the outcomes you achieve:
- Residents enjoy their meals – food is appetising, well presented, appropriately portioned and served at the right temperature.
- Residents receive the nutrition they need – meals and snacks support individual nutritional requirements and promote hydration and wellbeing.
- Individual needs are respected – dietary requirements, allergies, cultural preferences, dislikes, texture modifications and personal choices are accurately understood and catered for.
- Mealtimes feel personal and positive – you contribute to a welcoming dining experience where residents feel listened to and valued.
- Food is consistently safe – high standards of food hygiene, allergen management, infection prevention and kitchen cleanliness are maintained.
- The kitchen runs efficiently – menus, ordering, stock control, preparation and cleaning are organised so that meals are delivered reliably and within budget.
- The wider care team is supported – you communicate effectively with colleagues and respond positively to changing resident needs.
- Waste is minimised – ingredients and resources are used thoughtfully while maintaining quality.
Your responsibilities
You will:
- Plan and prepare nutritious breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks.
- Follow agreed menus while adapting meals to residents’ individual needs and preferences.
- Prepare modified-texture and special-diet meals where required.
- Maintain accurate records relating to food safety, temperatures, allergens and other relevant requirements.
- Monitor stock, place orders and use ingredients efficiently.
- Maintain excellent standards of kitchen hygiene and cleanliness.
- Work within relevant food safety and health and safety requirements.
- Listen to residents’ feedback and use it to improve menus and mealtimes.
- Work collaboratively with care staff, management and other colleagues.
- Contribute ideas for seasonal menus, special occasions and resident favourites.
About you
You will ideally have experience working as a Chef, Cook or Catering Assistant with significant responsibility for food preparation, preferably within a care, nursing home, hospital, school or similar setting.
Most importantly, you will:
- Care about the people you are cooking for.
- Take pride in producing good-quality, nutritious food.
- Understand that residents have individual tastes, routines and needs.
- Be organised, reliable and able to work independently.
- Have a good understanding of food hygiene and allergen awareness.
- Be comfortable adapting recipes and meals when required.
- Communicate well with residents and colleagues.
A relevant catering qualification and current food hygiene training would be advantageous, although attitude, care and a genuine commitment to residents are equally important to us.
Why join us?
You will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference every day. In a close-knit care setting, you will get to know the people you are cooking for and see first-hand the difference that good food can make.
We want our kitchen to be a place where quality, dignity and enjoyment come together – and where the Chef/Cook is recognised as an important member of the care team.
If you are passionate about food and want your cooking to have a meaningful impact on people's lives, we would love to hear from you.
