SELF-EMPLOYED TUTOR & MENTOR OPPORTUNITIES – BECKERMET, CUMBERLAND
Short-term roles | Starting after October half term
We are looking for two compassionate, reliable and engaging professionals to support a young man in the Beckermet area of Cumberland as he prepares for and transitions back into school.
We are recruiting separately for:
Tutor – £35 per hour
Up to 10 hours per week
Mentor – £28 per hour
Approximately 5 hours per week, with the potential for an additional 1–2 hours where required.
We would consider an exceptional candidate who has the skills and experience to undertake both elements of the role.
About the support
This is a short-term transition package designed to help the young person successfully move into his new school placement following the October half-term.
Support will initially take place in the young person’s home and/or suitable local community spaces in and around Beckermet, with a strong focus on building confidence, consistency and readiness for school.
The Tutor will provide individualised academic support, helping the young person to maintain engagement with learning, identify and address gaps, and build confidence ahead of his school transition.
The Mentor will focus on relationship-building, emotional wellbeing, confidence, routines, independence and the practical and emotional aspects of returning to a school environment.
Both professionals will work as part of the wider transition plan and will be expected to:
- Build a positive, consistent and trusting professional relationship with the young person
- Work in a flexible, person-centred and neurodiversity-affirming way
- Support gradual preparation for a successful transition into school
- Liaise appropriately with our management team and other professionals involved
- Provide brief written weekly updates outlining engagement, progress, achievements and any areas requiring further support
- Contribute to transition planning and communication with the receiving school where required
- Maintain clear professional boundaries and accurate records
Location & travel
Beckermet, Cumberland (CA21)
Applicants must be local to Beckermet or the surrounding West Cumberland area and able to travel reliably to the young person's home and appropriate community venues.
Reasonable mileage/public transport costs will be reimbursed for travel exceeding the first 30 minutes of each journey, subject to prior agreement.
What we're looking for
For the Tutor role, we are particularly interested in applicants with teaching, tutoring, SEND, alternative provision or related educational experience. Qualified teachers are welcomed, although we are also interested in experienced tutors with a strong track record of engaging young people who may have experienced barriers to education.
For the Mentor role, relevant experience may include youth work, SEND, pastoral support, alternative provision, education, social care, family support or therapeutic/relational work with young people.
Above all, we are looking for people who are calm, dependable, patient and genuinely able to build relationships with young people who may need time to develop trust.
