The Position / Role
Overview:
The Production Planner develops, maintains and executes Manufacturing and Assembly production plans to meet customer demand efficiently while supporting manufacturing stability, inventory optimisation and operational performance. Working within planning methodologies set by the Fulfilment Engineer, the role converts customer demand, MPS requirements and inventory strategies into realistic, executable schedules.
Key accountabilities:
- Production planning: develop, maintain and execute achievable Manufacturing and Assembly schedules based on demand, forecasts, inventory policy, capacity and material availability.
- MPS and replenishment: operate the Master Production Schedule, maintain Finished Goods replenishment plans and recommend volume adjustments using demand and performance feedback.
- Inventory optimisation: support agreed stocking strategies, maintain availability of finished goods, sub-assemblies and manufactured components, and reduce shortages, excess stock and expedite activity.
- Manufacturing and Assembly coordination: sequence work to maximise efficiency, balance make-to-order and make-to-stock priorities, coordinate recovery plans and support same-day, three-day and standard service commitments.
- Materials and supply: liaise with Purchasing and Stores on shortages, supplier constraints and recovery actions; escalate significant risks affecting delivery performance.
- ERP and production control: maintain planning data, execute MRP recommendations, keep schedules and records accurate, and apply planning parameters set by the Fulfilment Engineer.
- Communication and improvement: coordinate with Production, Progress Engineering, Sales, Customer Services, Engineering, Quality and Finance; support improved planning methods, reporting, KPIs and ERP utilisation.
Authority and decision making:
The Production Planner is authorised to maintain daily Manufacturing and Assembly schedules, operate the MPS within agreed policies, adjust schedules in response to operational change, allocate production priorities within planning rules, recommend process improvements and escalate conflicts or strategic issues to the Fulfilment Engineer or Production Manager.
Skills and Attributes
Knowledge and experience:
- Essential: production planning experience in manufacturing; good understanding of MRP, MPS, inventory management and scheduling; ERP planning experience; strong organisational, analytical, communication and coordination skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Desirable: make-to-order and make-to-stock experience; Lean Manufacturing awareness; APICS/CPIM or equivalent; advanced Excel; demand planning and inventory optimisation experience.
