GEIM is looking for an experienced Freight Sales and Business Development professional to join our growing international shipping and logistics business.
This is not an entry-level sales position and is not intended for candidates whose experience is only in general sales outside the freight and customs industry.
We are specifically looking for someone who has previously worked in freight forwarding, international logistics, shipping and/or customs clearance sales and already understands how to sell these services to businesses.
Previous experience managing a sales team is not required. Your job title in previous roles is less important to us than your actual experience, industry knowledge and ability to win and onboard customers.
We are happy to hear from experienced Freight Sales Executives, Business Development Executives, Account Managers, Sales Managers and Business Development Managers who have a genuine track record of selling within the freight and customs industry.
The role
Your primary responsibility will be to generate, develop and convert new business opportunities for GEIM, helping businesses with their international shipping, freight forwarding and customs requirements.
You will be expected to understand a prospective customer's shipping requirements, build strong commercial relationships, identify appropriate solutions and convert opportunities into long-term customers.
The successful candidate should be commercially driven, confident speaking with business owners and decision-makers, and capable of managing the sales process from initial conversation through to quotation, negotiation, closing and customer onboarding.
What we are looking for
- Proven previous sales or business development experience within freight forwarding, international logistics, shipping and/or customs clearance
- Direct experience selling freight, customs or related logistics services to businesses
- A strong understanding of the freight forwarding and international shipping industry
- Knowledge of customs clearance, customs documentation and the commercial requirements involved in importing and exporting goods
- A proven ability to win new customers and onboard new accounts
- Strong B2B sales experience, including prospecting, relationship building, negotiation and closing
- Experience preparing or discussing freight quotations and commercial proposals with customers
- Experience managing and developing a sales pipeline
- Strong account management and customer relationship skills
- Confidence dealing with business owners, directors, importers, exporters, manufacturers, e-commerce businesses and other commercial customers
- Strong commercial awareness and an understanding of how to identify profitable business opportunities
- The ability to develop long-term relationships rather than focusing only on one-off transactions
Industry experience is essential
We want to be very clear that we are not looking for a general salesperson who is new to freight forwarding or customs.
Applicants should already have genuine sales experience within freight forwarding, customs clearance, shipping or a closely related logistics environment.
For example, someone with several years of excellent sales experience in an unrelated industry but no freight or customs sales experience would not be the right fit for this particular position.
Existing client relationships and network
An established network within the freight, logistics, import/export and customs industry would be a major advantage.
We are particularly interested in speaking with candidates who have:
- An existing network of businesses that regularly import or export goods
- Strong relationships with previous or existing freight customers
- An established book of business or portfolio of customer relationships
- A strong database or network of commercial prospects built through their career
- The ability to introduce and onboard new customers through relationships they have developed within the industry
A candidate who can bring existing relationships and potential new business into GEIM would be particularly attractive.
Any customer introductions or relationships must, of course, be developed and transferred appropriately and in accordance with any existing contractual or confidentiality obligations.
Freight and customs knowledge
Experience across any of the following areas would be highly valuable:
- Air freight
- Sea freight
- Road freight
- International courier and express shipping
- Imports and exports
- Customs clearance
- Customs documentation
- Import and export documentation
- International trade
- Freight forwarding
- E-commerce logistics
- Cross-border shipping
You do not necessarily need to be an expert in every mode of transport. We are much more interested in someone with strong commercial freight experience who understands customers, understands the industry and knows how to sell.
What matters most to us
Your previous title does not need to have been "Manager".
You may currently be a:
- Freight Sales Executive
- Freight Account Manager
- Business Development Executive
- Business Development Manager
- Logistics Sales Executive
- Customs Sales Executive
- Freight Sales Manager
- Key Account Manager
- International Logistics Sales Executive
If you have strong freight or customs sales experience and can demonstrate that you know how to find, win, convert and onboard customers, we want to hear from you.
