About the role
UK Green Energy is looking for an experienced Solar PV Roofer / Solar Panel Installer to join our growing installation team.
Our preference is to appoint someone on a full-time, permanent PAYE basis. However, we are also willing to consider experienced, reliable self-employed subcontractors who are looking for consistent, long-term work.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and professional installation of solar PV panels and roof-mounted equipment on domestic properties.
This is not a general labouring position. Applicants must have genuine experience working on roofs and installing solar PV systems.
Health and safety is extremely important within our business. All work must be completed in accordance with company procedures, site-specific RAMS, working-at-height requirements and quality-control processes.
The role is based from Doncaster and will involve regular travel to customer properties. Overnight stays and working away may also be required depending on project location.
Main duties and responsibilities
The role will include:
- Installing solar PV panels on pitched domestic roofs
- Installing roof hooks, rails, brackets, flashings and mounting systems
- Working on tiled, slate and other common UK pitched-roof types
- Measuring, marking out and positioning solar arrays accurately
- Removing and replacing roof coverings where required
- Ensuring roof penetrations and fixing points are weatherproof and professionally finished
- Assisting with the safe routing of DC cabling from the roof to the electrical installation area
- Working closely with solar electricians and other members of the installation team
- Checking roofs and installation areas before work begins
- Identifying damaged tiles, unsafe roof areas or unsuitable fixing points
- Reporting site issues or deviations from the installation design
- Following site-specific risk assessments and method statements
- Using ladders, scaffolding and fall-protection equipment safely
- Carrying out pre-use checks on harnesses, ladders and access equipment
- Keeping the work area clean, organised and safe
- Protecting customers’ property during installation
- Taking clear installation photographs for quality-control and compliance records
- Completing job sheets, site records and other required documentation
- Ensuring all work meets company quality standards
- Representing the company professionally when working in customers’ homes
- Assisting with loading, unloading and checking installation materials
- Reporting shortages, damaged components or incorrect equipment promptly
- Supporting other installation duties where reasonably required
Essential requirements
Applicants must have:
- Proven experience installing solar PV panels
- Experience working safely on domestic pitched roofs
- Experience working on tiled and slate roofs
- A valid CSCS card appropriate to the work being undertaken
- Current Working at Height training
- A good understanding of roof safety and fall-protection procedures
- Knowledge of safe ladder use and roof access
- Good practical roofing and installation skills
- The ability to read and follow solar layout drawings and installation plans
- The ability to work accurately and maintain high standards
- A full UK driving licence
- A professional and reliable approach to work
- Good communication skills
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team
- The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- The physical ability to carry out roof-based installation work
- A willingness to work within strict health and safety procedures
- The ability to provide copies of qualifications, training certificates and cards
- A willingness to travel and occasionally work away from home
Desirable experience and qualifications
The following would be beneficial:
- Experience with integrated or in-roof solar PV systems
- Experience with different solar mounting manufacturers and systems
- Roofing qualifications or recognised trade experience
- Manual Handling training
- Asbestos Awareness training
- Harness User or Harness Inspection training
- PASMA qualification
- First Aid training
- Experience with battery-storage projects
- Experience supervising or leading an installation team
- Experience completing photographic QA records
- Experience working under MCS installation and quality procedures
- Experience working on social-housing or funded energy-efficiency programmes
Health and safety expectations
Health and safety standards are strict and non-negotiable.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Follow company health and safety procedures at all times
- Read and comply with site-specific RAMS
- Attend site inductions and toolbox talks
- Use the correct PPE
- Use access and fall-protection equipment correctly
- Stop work and report unsafe conditions
- Avoid taking shortcuts or carrying out unapproved work
- Report incidents, near misses and damaged equipment
- Maintain a safe and tidy working area
- Cooperate with site inspections and quality audits
- Follow instructions from supervisors and site managers

Travel and working away
The role is based from Doncaster and will involve travel to installation sites.
Working away and overnight stays may be required depending on project location. Reasonable notice will be provided wherever possible.
Accommodation and agreed travel expenses will be arranged or reimbursed in accordance with company policy.
Applicants must be comfortable with early starts, travel and Overnight stays.

Self-employed subcontractors
Experienced self-employed solar roofers may also be considered.
Subcontract applicants must be able to provide:
- Valid CSCS card
- Evidence of relevant experience and competence
- Relevant training certificates
- Public liability insurance
- UTR and CIS details
- Own tools and appropriate PPE, unless agreed otherwise
- References or examples of previous solar installation work
- Evidence of the right to work in the UK
- Reliable availability
- A willingness to work under company RAMS, quality procedures and site rules
- A willingness to travel and occasionally work away when required
Subcontractors must not send substitute labour or additional workers without prior approval.
The working arrangement, payment basis, equipment responsibilities, travel expectations and availability requirements will be agreed before work is allocated.
Working hours
Normal working hours will generally be Monday to Friday, although start and finish times may vary depending on site location and workload.
Some early starts, travel, overtime and occasional working away may be required.
