About Cedar Vets
Join a team where care, excellence and growth truly matter.
Owned and run by husband and wife, Charlie and Lara Mitchell, Cedar Vets has been proudly established in the local community for over 130 years. As an independent practice with deep local roots, we are passionate about preserving our “why”, quite simply, we care.
We care about clinical standards, continually investing in improvement and development so we can be the best primary care practice we can be. We care deeply about our people — their wellbeing, work–life balance and long-term career development and we actively support progression at every stage. We also care about our clients, taking the time to deliver thoughtful, considered care that puts patients first.
We're growing, too. Our new Bordon practice opened in March 2025, and our teams now work from modern, purpose-built facilities across Alton, Alresford and Four Marks, creating exciting opportunities to develop new roles and shape the future of the practice together.
If you value people as much as patients, and believe in doing things properly, you'll feel right at home here. As we continue to grow, we're now looking for an HR & People Lead to take ownership of HR at Cedar Vets and help us maintain the culture we're so proud of.
About the Role
This new role will bring HR fully in-house at Cedar Vets, taking over from our outsourced support. You'll be the main point of contact for HR across the business, working across all four of our practices.
There's a people-development side to the role too working alongside department leads and being a steady, practical presence for managers as they develop their own people.
You'll report to Charlie, our Managing Director, and work closely with the senior leadership team, with genuine autonomy to own HR and get on with the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of HR - contracts, policies, flexible working requests, absence management and employee records across all four practices
- Coordinate starters, leavers, salary changes and benefits into payroll, keeping employee records accurate and up to date
- Manage right to work checks and DBS processes, and oversee sponsor licence and visa compliance where relevant
- Manage performance and sickness casework, working with managers and our local employment lawyer on complex cases
- Own grievance and disciplinary processes, keeping them fair, consistent and properly documented
- Support the learning and development of everyone at Cedar Vets, alongside our heads of department
- Own and continually improve onboarding for new starters
- Be present across all four practices to build trust with the team and spot issues early
- Work closely with the Managing Director on people matters, handling what you can and flagging what needs a decision
About You
- Experienced HR generalist, ideally gained in a larger, more structured B2C or service organisation
- CIPD qualified (or equivalent), you'll be our main point of contact for HR
- A confident, proactive operator who enjoys taking ownership of day-to-day HR
- Enjoys supporting people to develop and reach their potential
- No veterinary or clinical background required, what matters more is a genuine connection to our values and the ability to build trust quickly
- Committed to being on-site across our practices; this is a relationship-first role that works best in person
