Are you an experienced Civil Engineer with a passion for rivers, restoration and nature-based solutions? Do you enjoy managing technically challenging projects, working closely with multidisciplinary specialists and seeing schemes progress from concept through to delivery? Are you looking for an opportunity to develop your career within one of the UK’s most respected environmental consultancies while contributing to projects that make a genuine difference to river environments?
We’re looking for a Senior Rivers Civil Engineer to join our growing Rivers and Coastal Engineering team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced river engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of innovative river restoration, flood risk and nature-based solutions projects across the UK and Ireland.
Our team works at the interface between engineering and environmental science, delivering projects that improve river resilience, restore natural processes and support sustainable infrastructure solutions. Working alongside specialists in geomorphology, fisheries, hydroecology, hydrology and environmental assessment, you’ll contribute to projects that make a lasting environmental impact while continuing to develop your own technical and project management expertise.
This is a genuinely varied role where you’ll be trusted to manage and deliver your own portfolio of projects, taking responsibility for technical outputs, programme management and client coordination. You’ll work on projects ranging from river restoration and fish passage schemes through to natural flood management, sediment management and wider catchment-based solutions, gaining exposure across the full project lifecycle from feasibility and outline design through to detailed design and implementation support.
As a Senior Engineer, you’ll play an important role in supporting collaborative project delivery, sharing technical knowledge with colleagues and helping maintain the high standards of quality and innovation that our clients expect. Unlike the Principal role, this position is focused on successful project delivery and technical contribution, with support from Principal Engineers and Associate Directors on broader strategic, commercial and team leadership matters.
You’ll need to bring
- A BEng, MEng or equivalent in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Significant experience delivering river engineering, river restoration, flood risk or nature-based solutions projects within consultancy, the water sector or a related environment.
- Strong technical knowledge of fluvial processes, river restoration techniques and hydraulic design principles.
- Experience managing projects, coordinating technical inputs and delivering work on time, within budget and to a high technical standard.
- Experience preparing and reviewing technical reports, specifications, drawings and tender documentation.
- Good communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients, regulators and multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
It’s a bonus if you have
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or are working towards chartership.
- Experience working with water companies, regulators or public sector clients.
- Knowledge of CDM regulations and experience supporting Designer or Principal Designer duties.
- Experience using HEC-RAS, Flood Modeller, AutoCAD or Civil 3D.
- Experience delivering fish passage, natural flood management or catchment restoration schemes.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior colleagues.
- Knowledge of environmental consenting and regulatory processes associated with river engineering projects.
You’ll be offered the chance to work on a wide variety of projects, many of which have a genuine impact on the management and restoration of river environments. We match this with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development to support your career progression. We also offer benefits to look after you, from private medical insurance for all employees, access to mental health first aiders and comprehensive income protection if you cannot work. We also offer superb flexible working options, balancing work with your life.
