About the Role:

We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer who can provide technical leadership across critical software initiatives. You will work closely with engineering, product, architecture, and business teams to shape technical direction, solve complex engineering problems, and establish scalable development practices. This is a high level technical role for an experienced engineer who wants significant technical influence without moving into executive management.

Key Responsibilities:
Technical Direction:
Define and influence technical approaches for complex software initiatives, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with business requirements.
Software Architecture:
Work with engineering and architecture teams to design robust application architectures, integration patterns, APIs, and distributed systems.
Complex Problem Solving:
Investigate challenging technical issues and provide practical solutions involving performance, scalability, reliability, security, and system integration.
Engineering Standards:
Help establish and improve coding standards, development practices, testing strategies, code quality processes, and engineering documentation.
Technical Mentoring:
Support Senior and Mid-level Software Engineers through technical guidance, design discussions, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
Cross Functional Collaboration:
Partner with Product, Project Management, DevOps, Security, and other technical teams to ensure engineering decisions support wider business objectives.
Technical Reviews:
Review system designs, implementation approaches, and major technical decisions while identifying risks and opportunities for improvement.
What We Are Looking For:
Experience:
8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong track record of designing and delivering complex production systems.
Technical Background:
Strong experience with modern programming languages, software architecture, APIs, databases, cloud platforms, distributed systems, automated testing, and continuous delivery practices.
Engineering Leadership:
You have demonstrated the ability to influence technical direction and mentor experienced engineers without relying on formal executive or management authority.
Architecture Skills:
You can translate complex business requirements into practical technical designs and clearly explain architectural trade offs to both technical and non technical stakeholders.
Communication:
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, product, operations, and business teams.
Mindset:
You are pragmatic and delivery focused. You know when to introduce sophisticated engineering solutions and when a simpler approach will provide greater reliability and business value.
Pay: £76,531.00-£100,000.00 per year
