Assistant Manager - The King William, Central Bristol
We are looking for a hands-on, reliable and personable Assistant Manager to join the team at The King William, a traditional pub in the heart of central Bristol.
This is a practical, customer-facing role for someone who enjoys being at the centre of a busy pub. You will work closely with the Manager to help run the pub day to day, while also being very much part of the team on the bar and on the floor.
The ideal person will be confident taking responsibility, happy to get stuck in wherever needed, and take pride in maintaining a well-run, welcoming and well-presented pub.
The Role
As Assistant Manager, you will support the Manager with the daily running of the pub and help ensure that service is consistently friendly, efficient and to a high standard.
This is a hands-on position. You will be expected to lead by example and be comfortable working behind the bar, serving customers, keeping the pub clean and tidy, checking stock and supporting the team throughout busy services.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Helping to open and close the pub and ensuring everything is ready for service
- Working hands-on behind the bar and on the floor during service
- Serving customers in a friendly, efficient and professional manner
- Supporting and supervising the team throughout busy periods
- Leading by example and maintaining high standards of customer service
- Ensuring the bar, cellar, pub and customer areas are kept clean, tidy and well presented
- Checking deliveries, rotating stock and assisting with stock control
- Supporting the Manager with ordering and maintaining appropriate stock levels
- Taking responsibility for the day-to-day presentation and upkeep of the pub
- Ensuring licensing, health and safety and food hygiene standards are followed
- Dealing confidently and courteously with customer queries or concerns
- Helping to train and support new members of the team
- Assisting with rotas and the organisation of day-to-day staffing where required
- Keeping an eye on the condition of the pub and reporting or dealing with maintenance issues promptly
- Taking responsibility for the pub when the Manager is not present
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is practical, dependable and genuinely enjoys working in a pub environment.
You will ideally have previous experience in a pub, bar, restaurant or similar hospitality setting, with some experience of supervising or leading a team.
Most importantly, you will:
- Be confident and comfortable working behind a busy bar
- Have a friendly and approachable manner with customers and colleagues
- Be willing to get stuck in and lead from the front
- Have good attention to detail and take pride in your work
- Be organised, reliable and able to take responsibility
- Stay calm and professional during busy services
- Be comfortable working evenings, weekends and other busy trading periods
- Have a good understanding of responsible alcohol service, food hygiene and workplace safety
- Be willing to learn and develop your knowledge of the pub and its day-to-day operation
Previous management experience is useful, but we are equally interested in someone with strong pub experience who is ready to take the next step into an Assistant Manager position.
The Environment
The King William is a traditional pub in central Bristol, and this role will suit someone who enjoys a genuine pub environment rather than a highly corporate hospitality setting.
You will be expected to be visible, involved and hands-on — whether that means serving a customer, helping the team through a busy period, moving stock, keeping the bar in order or making sure the pub is ready for the next day's trade.
Accommodation is available as part of the role, with shared live-in accommodation provided for the successful candidate.
If you are looking for a role where you can take responsibility, work closely with an experienced management team and play an important part in the everyday running of a busy Bristol pub, we would be pleased to hear from you.
