The Role
As Deputy General Manager, you will play a key supportive leadership role in the day-to-day operational and commercial management of the Yorkshire depot and area. Working closely with the General Manager, you will share responsibility for the depot’s performance, including profit and loss (P&L), operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
You will oversee operations focused on road sweepers, ensuring effective coordination, compliance, and maximum utilisation of fleet and resources.
You will manage the hire desk function, lead work scheduling, oversee driver performance, and ensure smooth delivery of services. You will also act as the lead decision-maker in the absence of the General Manager, ensuring continuity of leadership and performance. In addition, you will be responsible for completing the weekly payroll spreadsheet for depot drivers and ensuring payroll accuracy for the depot.
Key Objectives and Responsibilities
· Support and share accountability with the General Manager for overall P&L performance, including cost control and revenue generation
· Co-manage daily depot operations, stepping into the General Manager role during periods of absence while maintaining full operational and commercial oversight
· Ensure efficient planning, scheduling, and coordination of road sweeper operations to maximise fleet utilisation and service delivery using our operations system TeamLeaf
· Oversee driver allocation, performance, and daily activities, including leading driver debriefs and ensuring feedback is captured and acted upon
· Deliver a high-quality, customer-focused booking and service experience, ensuring clear communication, accurate job allocation, and timely completion to support invoicing and reporting
· Provide leadership, direction, and support to depot office staff, drivers, and operational teams, fostering a strong “One Team” culture across the depot
· Monitor and manage operational KPIs including safety, productivity, utilisation, and customer satisfaction, driving continuous improvement across performance and efficiency
· Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety policies and environmental legislation, promoting a proactive safety culture through briefings, toolbox talks, and risk management
· Support recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing training of staff to maintain a skilled and capable workforce
· Complete and manage the weekly payroll spreadsheet for depot drivers, ensuring accuracy and timely processing
· Contribute to financial and operational reporting, and actively participate in management and continuous improvement meetings
· Drive consistency in operational procedures and promote best practices across the business
· Carry out any additional duties as required by the General Manager or Operations Director
Requirements
· Strong organisational and communication skills with the ability to manage operational teams
· Proven ability to support and influence operational and financial performance (P&L awareness)
· Experience or understanding of fleet operations, particularly road sweepers (preferred)
· Highly organised with a methodical approach to scheduling and workload management
· Ability to use initiative and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
· Flexible and adaptable, with the ability to step into senior leadership responsibilities when required
· Positive, proactive approach with strong problem-solving skills
· Commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and performance
