Job Purpose
To carry out general maintenance, repairs, and health and safety checks throughout the care home, ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for residents, staff, and visitors. The Handyperson will contribute to the smooth running of the home and support a positive living environment for people living with dementia.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out basic repairs and maintenance tasks throughout the home.
- Perform routine health and safety checks on the building, equipment, and grounds.
- Ensure communal areas, bedrooms, and outdoor spaces are maintained to a safe standard.
- Report and respond to maintenance issues promptly.
- Carry out minor painting, decorating, plumbing, gardening and carpentry work where appropriate.
- Monitor and maintain lighting, heating, and other building systems.
- Ensure pathways, entrances, car parks, and gardens are safe and well-maintained.
- Liaise with external contractors and support access to the home when required.
- Keep maintenance records up to date.
- Follow all health and safety, fire safety, and infection control procedures.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Experience of carrying out general maintenance or DIY tasks.
- Good understanding of health and safety practices.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and flexible.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a care home, healthcare, or residential setting.
- Basic skills in painting, plumbing, carpentry, or decorating.
- Understanding of dementia and the needs of older people.
