Gas Certification Company Ltd (GCC) is an established gas and renewables training and assessment centre based in Blantyre. We deliver professional training, assessment and certification to new entrants and experienced engineers across the gas and wider energy sectors.
Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced and knowledgeable Technical Manager / ACS Trainer and Assessor to join our team.
The role
This is a hands-on position combining responsibility for the technical management and compliance of the centre with the regular delivery of ACS gas training and assessments.
The successful candidate will provide technical leadership to GCC’s trainers and assessors while also delivering classroom and practical training, carrying out candidate assessments and supporting engineers through the certification process.
You will help ensure that all training and assessment activities are technically accurate, consistently delivered and compliant with current legislation, industry standards, certification-body requirements and GCC procedures.
Key responsibilities
Training and assessment
- Deliver engaging and technically accurate ACS gas training.
- Carry out practical and theory-based ACS assessments.
- Assess candidates fairly and consistently against the required standards.
- Provide constructive feedback and additional support to candidates where required.
- Deliver practical demonstrations and supervise candidates using workshop equipment and appliances.
- Maintain accurate candidate, assessment and certification records.
- Ensure assessments are completed in accordance with approved procedures and timescales.
- Create a professional, supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- Adapt delivery methods to suit candidates with different levels of knowledge and industry experience.
Technical leadership
- Act as the centre’s principal source of technical guidance.
- Provide technical support and advice to trainers, assessors, candidates and centre management.
- Monitor changes to gas safety legislation, British Standards, industry guidance, normative documents and manufacturer instructions.
- Communicate technical updates to staff and ensure changes are incorporated into training and assessment activities.
- Review and update course materials, assessment resources, technical procedures and practical exercises.
- Ensure training appliances, equipment and assessment facilities remain appropriate, safe and compliant.
- Support the development and introduction of new gas, renewables and wider energy-sector programmes.
Quality and compliance
- Maintain compliance with ACS certification-body and awarding-body requirements.
- Ensure all training and assessments are delivered consistently and in accordance with approved procedures.
- Oversee internal quality assurance, sampling and standardisation activities.
- Maintain accurate technical, assessment and quality records.
- Prepare for and support external audits, verification visits and centre inspections.
- Manage technical actions or non-conformities arising from internal or external audits.
- Monitor candidate feedback, assessment outcomes and quality trends.
- Investigate technical complaints, assessment queries and appeals where required.
- Ensure appropriate controls are maintained to protect the security and integrity of assessments.
- Work closely with the Centre Manager to maintain centre policies, procedures and approval requirements.
Team support and development
- Provide technical leadership and day-to-day support to trainers, assessors and internal quality assurers.
- Observe and monitor training and assessment delivery.
- Lead regular technical and standardisation meetings.
- Identify staff training and continuing professional development requirements.
- Support the recruitment, induction and authorisation of new technical personnel.
- Promote a consistent, professional and candidate-focused approach across the centre.
- Assist with staff competence, performance and development reviews.
Health and safety
- Promote and maintain a strong health and safety culture throughout the centre.
- Ensure workshops, appliances and practical assessment areas are operated safely.
- Support the preparation and review of risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Ensure equipment inspection and maintenance arrangements are followed.
- Investigate and address technical incidents, concerns and near misses.
Essential requirements
- Extensive current or recent experience within the gas industry.
- Current relevant ACS qualifications, including CCN1 and appropriate appliance categories.
- Comprehensive knowledge of domestic gas safety legislation, standards and industry procedures.
- Previous experience delivering gas training and carrying out ACS assessments.
- Recognised assessor qualification, such as TAQA, A1, D32/D33 or equivalent.
- Experience working within an ACS assessment centre, certification environment or approved training centre.
- Good understanding of internal quality assurance and standardisation requirements.
- Ability to interpret and apply technical, regulatory and certification-body requirements.
- Strong leadership, communication and decision-making skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical information clearly.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Competent IT and record-management skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable requirements
- Internal Quality Assurance qualification, such as TAQA, V1, D34 or equivalent.
- Recognised teaching or training qualification.
- Commercial gas, LPG, metering, renewables or electrical qualifications.
- Experience managing external audits, inspections or certification-body visits.
- Experience developing technical training programmes and learning materials.
- Knowledge of SQA or other awarding-body quality requirements.
- Previous experience in a Technical Manager, Lead Assessor or senior training-centre role.
