We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Project Manager / CAD Design Engineer to join our growing team.
This is a varied role combining project management, workshop coordination and CAD design. You will be responsible for overseeing projects from initial concept and design through to manufacture and completion. Ensuring work is properly planned, the workshop team has everything they need and projects are completed on time and to the required standard.
The ideal candidate will have a strong engineering background, previous experience managing projects or teams and be confident producing technical designs using CAD software.
Experience within the conveyor, material handling, quarrying, recycling or bulk handling industries would be a strong advantage, but isn't essential. We are equally interested in candidates from other engineering, manufacturing or fabrication backgrounds who have the right technical and management experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage engineering and fabrication projects from initial enquiry/design through to manufacture and completion.
- Produce and develop CAD drawings and designs for customer projects.
- Turn customer requirements and concepts into practical, manufacturable engineering designs.
- Oversee multiple projects and ensure agreed deadlines are achieved.
- Coordinate the day-to-day workload within the workshop.
- Work closely with welders, fabricators and other workshop personnel to ensure projects progress smoothly.
- Ensure the workshop team has the correct drawings, specifications, materials and information required for each project.
- Monitor project progress and identify potential delays or issues before they impact completion dates.
- Liaise with customers, suppliers and internal teams throughout projects.
- Assist with material requirements, purchasing and project planning.
- Check drawings, measurements and specifications prior to manufacture.
- Ensure completed work meets customer requirements and expected quality standards.
- Help continually improve workshop organisation, project planning and production efficiency.
- Provide practical technical support to the workshop where required.
What We're Looking ForEssential
- Previous CAD design experience within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Strong engineering knowledge and the ability to understand how designs translate into fabrication and manufacture.
- Previous project management, production management, workshop management or team-leading experience.
- Ability to read, produce and interpret technical/engineering drawings.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
- Good communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work closely with workshop teams and confidently manage workloads and priorities.
- A practical, hands-on approach to engineering projects.
- Ability to work to deadlines and keep projects moving.
Desirable
- Experience designing conveyors, material handling systems or associated equipment.
- Experience within the conveyor, quarrying, recycling, manufacturing or bulk material handling sectors.
- Fabrication and/or mechanical engineering knowledge.
- Experience working directly with welders and fabricators.
- Experience taking engineering projects from initial concept through to finished manufacture.
- Knowledge of motors, gearboxes, bearings, rollers, drums, belting and other conveyor components would be advantageous.
- Experience with site installations and commissioning would also be beneficial.
The Person
We're looking for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of projects rather than simply producing drawings.
You'll need to be equally confident working at a computer designing a project, speaking with customers and suppliers, and going into the workshop to make sure the job is progressing as planned.
You should be organised, practical and proactive, with the ability to spot problems early and find solutions that keep projects moving.
Conveyor experience would be beneficial, but a solid engineering background and the right attitude and experience are more important.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary based on experience.
- Permanent, full-time position.
- Varied projects with the opportunity to see your designs go from concept to completed machinery.
- A hands-on role with genuine responsibility for projects.
- Opportunity to work across bespoke engineering and fabrication projects.
- The chance to play an important role in the continued growth and development of the business.
