Window Technician
Building Finishing Services UK Ltd (BFS) — Edinburgh & Central Belt
Full-time, permanent | Salary: £35,000 – £38,000, dependent on experience | Mon–Fri 8am–4:30pm
About the role
BFS is looking for an experienced Window Technician to join our growing repairs and maintenance team. This is a repairs-focused role: you'll diagnose and fix faults across uPVC, timber and aluminium window and door systems in residential and commercial properties throughout Edinburgh and the Central Belt, working as part of a multi-trade team. You'll need a strong practical understanding of how different window and door mechanisms work, so you can identify the root cause of a fault quickly and repair it right first time.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair faults across uPVC, timber and aluminium window and door systems — failed glazing units, damaged hinges, locks, handles, restrictors, seals and adjustment issues
- Service and adjust a wide range of window and door mechanisms, including espagnolette and multi-point locking systems, friction and butt hinges, tilt-and-turn and casement mechanisms
- Carry out planned and responsive repairs in occupied and void properties
- Inspect existing installations and recommend the most appropriate repair solution, minimising unnecessary replacement
- Replace glazing units, window furniture and mechanism components as part of repair work
- Read and interpret technical drawings, specifications and manufacturers' instructions to correctly identify parts and mechanisms
- Ensure all repair work complies with Building Regulations, health & safety legislation and company procedures
- Complete job records, photographs and documentation via company systems
- Maintain company vehicle, tools and equipment to a safe, serviceable standard
- Work collaboratively with joiners, glaziers, plasterers and decorators where repairs form part of a wider project
- Deliver a professional, courteous service to customers, tenants and clients
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience repairing and maintaining windows and doors, not just installing them
- Solid working knowledge of how uPVC, timber and aluminium window and door mechanisms operate — locking systems, hinges, restrictors and opening mechanisms
- Strong fault-diagnosis skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting
- Competent with a range of hand and power tools
- High attention to detail and pride in workmanship
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Experience in social housing or responsive repairs
- Glazing or fenestration qualifications
- CSCS card
- Working-at-height certification, IPAF/PASMA
- Basic DBS check (or willingness to undergo one), where work involves occupied properties
