Position Details
Position Title: Production & Manufacturing Operator
Reports To: Production Manager / Production Supervisor
Department: Production
Driver’s Licence: Essential
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 16:45, including 1 hour of break time per day, which may be taken in split periods.
Salary: £13.45 per hour
Job Purpose
Work as part of the production team to manufacture wet wipes, soap/sanitiser and related products safely, efficiently and accurately. The role combines production and machine operation responsibilities, including operation of the Fabric Rewind Machine, quality control, routine equipment maintenance, production records and support across the wider operation. The role also provides warehouse and delivery support when required.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Manufacturing: Manufacture products from the beginning of the production process through to finished goods, following production specifications, work instructions and company procedures.
Machine Operation: Safely and efficiently operate production machinery, including the Fabric Rewind Machine. Load and unload fabric rolls, feed material through slitting and perforating stations, monitor machine performance and make adjustments as required.
Machine Setup & Adjustment: Change gears and machine settings to achieve specified sheet lengths and product dimensions. Set up and adjust slitting blades and perforating equipment to meet product requirements.
Production Targets: Work efficiently to achieve daily production targets while maintaining required quality and safety standards. Identify and address minor operational issues to minimise downtime.
Quality Control: Carry out regular quality checks throughout production. Check slit widths, sheet lengths, perforation quality, winding quality, product appearance and other relevant quality requirements. Remove and report defective products or materials.
Documentation & Traceability: Accurately record batch numbers, production information, quality checks, machine checks, downtime and waste figures as required. Maintain traceability of materials and finished products.
Maintenance & Equipment Care: Complete daily start-up and end-of-shift machine checks. Carry out routine lubrication, cleaning and basic preventative maintenance. Complete calibration and setting checks and report mechanical faults, unusual noises, wear or other maintenance requirements.
Health, Safety & Compliance: Follow all company operational policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, ISO and BRC requirements. Ensure machine guards, safety devices and emergency stops are functioning correctly. Wear required PPE at all times and participate in safety inspections and continuous improvement activities.
Housekeeping: Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area. Clean and dust machinery regularly, dispose of waste in accordance with company procedures and maintain high housekeeping standards.
Warehouse & Delivery Support: Support the warehouse and delivery team when required, including warehouse duties and van driving to cover holidays, absences and operational requirements.
Teamwork: Work effectively as part of the production team while also being capable of working independently and taking responsibility for assigned tasks.
Skills & Experience
Essential: Previous experience operating production or manufacturing machinery; ability to read and follow production specifications and work instructions; good attention to detail; basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills; ability to complete production records accurately; understanding of workplace health and safety requirements; ability to work independently and as part of a team; full/appropriate driving licence.
Desirable: Experience operating rewind, converting, slitting or perforating machinery; experience within textile, fabric, hygiene or paper converting industries; basic maintenance experience; forklift licence, if applicable.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand for extended periods; frequent lifting, handling and movement of production materials; ability to work safely around moving machinery; and ability to perform repetitive tasks while maintaining quality standards.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Production output achieved versus target; product quality and defect rates; machine uptime and operational efficiency; accuracy of production and batch records; compliance with safety procedures; completion of daily machine checks and maintenance requirements; housekeeping and cleanliness standards.
Working Conditions
Manufacturing and production environment with exposure to machinery noise, dust and moving equipment. Appropriate PPE, including safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection and other equipment as required, must be worn.
Probationary Period
The role is subject to an initial 3-month probationary period, which will be reviewed and may be extended for a further 3 months if necessary.
