The Role
We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineer to take ownership of the design, development, programming, operation, and optimisation of manufacturing systems, CNC machinery, automation equipment, and mechatronic solutions supporting AM-COE's production and R&D activities.
You will create CAD models and engineering drawings, develop CAM programs, operate and optimise CNC equipment, troubleshoot electro-mechanical systems, and support machine development projects. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams — materials scientists, manufacturing engineers, software developers, and production staff — to deliver innovative manufacturing solutions, and will contribute directly to internal R&D programmes, customer projects, OEM machine development, process automation, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop detailed CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings in Fusion 360 for manufacturing and machine development projects
- Generate and optimise CAM programs for CNC machining operations, including G-code programming
- Set up, operate, and optimise CNC equipment (milling, turning, grinding, and precision manufacturing)
- Design, build, program, and test electro-mechanical systems, including electrical enclosures, power distribution, and switchgear
- Support automation projects involving sensors, actuators, motors, PLCs, robotics, and industrial control systems
- Conduct machine testing, validation, and performance optimisation
- Source components and manage suppliers in the UK and internationally, working to varied project budgets
- Collaborate with R&D and production teams to improve manufacturing processes and equipment reliability
- Participate in customer-facing technical discussions and project delivery
- Maintain technical documentation, SOPs, risk assessments, and engineering records
- Manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced manufacturing and research environment
Essential Requirements
- BEng or Master's degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electronics, or Manufacturing Engineering (or a related field)
- Valid permission to work in the United Kingdom
- Strong proficiency in Fusion 360, including CAD and CAM workflows, with hands-on CNC programming, setup, and operation experience
- Practical experience with mechatronic systems: PLCs, sensors, motors, actuators, and industrial controls
- Ability to design and manage electrical enclosures (power distribution, switching, circuit design)
- Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (RS-485, serial, etc.)
- Familiarity with C/C++ and Python programming, and version control with Git/GitHub
- Experience using AI tools (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT) to accelerate engineering and manufacturing work
- Ability to read and produce electrical schematics and mechanical assembly drawings, and to integrate complete systems
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work in cross-functional teams
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously across both R&D and production environments
- Comfortable working in a high-momentum, startup-style culture
Desirable
- Experience with additive manufacturing technologies
- Experience with robotics, motion control, machine vision, or industrial automation systems
- Knowledge of Industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing technologies
- Prior experience in aerospace, automotive, energy, or advanced manufacturing sectors
