Overview
We are seeking a proactive and versatile Maintenance Man/Woman or Handyman/Woman to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of our facilities by performing a wide range of maintenance tasks. Your expertise will help maintain a safe, functional, and welcoming environment for staff and visitors alike. Duties
- Conduct routine inspections of buildings, equipment, and systems to identify maintenance needs and prevent issues before they arise
- Perform repairs and maintenance on plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC units, doors, windows, and fixtures using appropriate tools and technique.
- The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the care home, including residents' rooms, communal areas, gardens and external areas, are maintained in a safe, clean and comfortable condition.
- You will carry out general maintenance, repairs and routine checks, respond promptly to maintenance issues and help ensure the home meets health and safety, fire safety and regulatory requirements.
- The role requires someone who takes pride in their work, has good attention to detail and understands the importance of working respectfully around elderly and vulnerable residents.
- Key Responsibilities
- Carry out general maintenance and handyman duties throughout the care home.
- Complete routine repairs to walls, doors, furniture, fixtures, fittings and other equipment.
- Carry out basic plumbing tasks, such as replacing taps, washers, toilet fittings and fixing minor leaks.
- Carry out basic electrical tasks where appropriately qualified and authorised.
- Repair and maintain doors, locks, handles, cupboards, shelving and other fixtures.
- Carry out painting, decorating and general refurbishment work.
- Maintain and repair flooring, skirting boards and other surfaces as required.
- Carry out routine checks of the building and report any defects or potential hazards.
- Maintain gardens, outdoor areas, pathways and fencing as required.
- Ensure maintenance areas, tools and equipment are kept clean, safe and organised.
- Respond to maintenance requests from staff and management in a timely manner.
- Maintain appropriate records of maintenance work and report outstanding issues.
- Assist contractors and external maintenance professionals when required.
- Help prepare rooms for new residents and complete repairs or redecoration following a resident's departure.
- Support the Home Manager with health and safety checks and maintenance requirements.
- Report any serious defects, hazards or concerns immediately to management.
- Ensure all work is carried out safely and in accordance with relevant policies and procedures.
- Work respectfully and considerately around residents, protecting their privacy, dignity and wellbeing at all times.
- Health & Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all care home health and safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure equipment and tools are used safely and appropriately.
- Report hazards, accidents, defects and unsafe conditions promptly.
- Support regular checks relating to fire safety, emergency lighting, water systems and other building services, within the limits of your training and competence.
- Never undertake work requiring specialist certification unless appropriately qualified.
- Keep maintenance areas and work sites secure and safe for residents, visitors and staff.
- Take appropriate precautions when working in residents' rooms or communal areas.
- Skills and Experience
- Essential
- Previous experience in general maintenance, handyman work, property maintenance or a similar role.
- Good practical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to carry out basic repairs, decorating and maintenance tasks.
- Good understanding of workplace health and safety.
- Ability to work independently and manage a range of maintenance requests.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Reliable, punctual and responsible.
- Ability to work respectfully in an environment supporting elderly and vulnerable people.
- Desirable
- Previous experience working in a care home, nursing home, hospital, hotel or similar environment.
- Basic plumbing and carpentry skills.
- Relevant trade qualifications.
- Electrical or other specialist qualifications.
- Experience with planned preventative maintenance.
- Knowledge of fire safety and building compliance requirements.

- Although this is primarily a maintenance role, the successful candidate will work regularly around residents.

- The successful applicant will be expected to understand and comply with the care home's safeguarding policies and procedures. Any concerns regarding the safety or wellbeing of residents must be reported immediately to the appropriate manager.

- Proven experience in general maintenance or handyman roles with a strong background in electrical work, mechanical repairs, or building upkeep
- Familiarity with schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals for troubleshooting electrical and mechanical systems
- Skilled in welding techniques and metal fabrication for repair or custom modifications
- Knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used in automated systems is highly desirable
- Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and schematics accurately to diagnose issues effectively
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience in maintenance teams is preferred
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly in English with team members and clients alike

Pay: £12.80-£13.50 per hour
