We are a registered charity providing horticultural therapy and meaningful outdoor activities for people living with a wide range of physical and mental health challenges.
Every member of our team helps us deliver this work. We are now looking for an experienced Bookkeeper / Finance Officer who would like to use their finance skills to support a worthwhile organisation.
About the role
You will take responsibility for the charity’s day-to-day bookkeeping and financial administration.
This is a varied, hands-on position for someone who enjoys working independently, takes pride in producing accurate work and can provide clear financial information to colleagues and external accountants.
You will work approximately 22.5 hours per week. Our preferred arrangement is three days from 8:30am to 4:30pm, although there is some flexibility over how the hours are distributed.
What you’ll be doing
- Managing day-to-day bookkeeping using Xero.
- Maintaining the purchase and sales ledgers.
- Completing bank reconciliations.
- Processing supplier invoices and payments.
- Carrying out credit control where required.
- Preparing management accounts and other financial information for the leadership team and external accountants.
- Preparing VAT returns.
- Maintaining complete and accurate financial records.
- Assisting with payroll and pension administration.
- Supporting budgeting and cash-flow reporting.
- Maintaining robust financial controls.
- Helping ensure compliance with relevant charity and accounting requirements.
Essential requirements
- Previous bookkeeping or finance experience within a small or medium-sized organisation.
- Strong working knowledge of Xero.
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.
- Ability to manage your own workload and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
- A friendly, positive and collaborative working style.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small team.
- Access to your own car or motorbike, as there is no practical public transport serving our rural site.
Desirable requirements
- Experience preparing accounts for a registered charity.
Pay and benefits
- Full-time equivalent salary of £32,000 per year.

Working pattern and location
The role is based at The Therapy Gardens in the village of Normandy, Surrey.
The preferred working pattern is approximately 21 hours over three days, ideally from 8:30am to 4:00pm. There is some flexibility over how the hours are worked.
The site is in a rural location and there is no practical public transport serving it. Applicants will therefore need access to their own car or motorbike.
