Role Overview:
A Mechanical Fitter's Mate/Trainee assists qualified mechanical fitters with the installation, maintenance, repair, and assembly of mechanical equipment and machinery. The role involves preparing tools and materials, handling and moving equipment, cleaning work areas, following health and safety procedures, and supporting fitting, dismantling, and testing tasks. A Mechanical Fitter's Mate works as part of a team to ensure mechanical work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
Here are some typical Key Responsibilities for a Mechanical Fitter's Mate/Trainee:
- Assist mechanical fitters with the installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery.
- Prepare and organize tools, materials, and equipment for daily tasks.
- Support the assembly and dismantling of mechanical components and systems.
- Handle, lift, and transport materials and equipment safely using appropriate manual handling techniques.
- Clean and maintain work areas, tools, and equipment to ensure a safe working environment.
- Follow health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times, including the correct use of PPE.
- Assist with inspections, testing, and fault-finding under the supervision of qualified fitters.
- Read and follow basic engineering drawings, work instructions, and technical documentation.
- Work effectively as part of a team to complete tasks on time and to the required quality standards.
- Support site housekeeping and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Carry out other general labouring and mechanical support duties as required.
- Painting the pipe ready for installation.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and basic workshop equipment safely.
- Good understanding of health and safety procedures, including the use of PPE.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under the supervision of qualified mechanical fitters.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Physically fit and capable of lifting, carrying, and handling materials safely.
- Ability to read and interpret basic engineering drawings and work instructions.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work to deadlines.
- Willingness to learn new skills and undertake relevant training.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills for measuring, recording, and completing documentation.
