Your next role
An exciting opportunity has become available to join the Accommodation Team within our Integrated Communities Department as a Gypsy and Traveller Housing Officer.
In this rewarding role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of Swindon Borough Council's permanent Gypsy and Traveller site at Hay Lane, which provides 37 residential pitches. Working closely with residents, colleagues and partner agencies, you will help ensure the site is safe, well managed and maintained, while delivering a high-quality housing management service that supports residents to sustain their pitch agreements and access the services they need.
This is a varied and people-focused role that requires excellent communication and relationship-building skills, sound judgement, and a commitment to delivering inclusive, customer-focused services.
You will develop positive working relationships with residents, promoting sustainment, supporting community wellbeing, responding to housing management issues, and working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to resolve issues and improve outcomes.
As our Gypsy and Traveller Housing Officer, you will play a key role in delivering an effective, customer-focused housing management service for residents at the Council's permanent Gypsy and Traveller site. Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing the site's waiting list, allocations and pitch terminations in line with Council policies and procedures.
- Providing day-to-day tenancy management, including rent collection and arrears management.
- Responding to reports of anti-social behaviour and working with residents and partner agencies to resolve issues.
- Monitoring and addressing environmental issues, including fly-tipping, to help maintain a clean, safe and welcoming site.
- Carrying out regular site inspections to ensure the site is well maintained.
- Reading water meters, generating water bills and responding to residents' queries relating to water charges.
- Promoting high standards of health and safety, identifying risks and taking appropriate action where required.
- Building positive relationships with residents through regular engagement, providing advice, support and signposting to other services where appropriate.
- Liaising with internal teams and contractors to report, monitor and resolve repairs and maintenance issues.
- Maintaining accurate records and ensuring all casework and administrative tasks are completed in a timely and professional manner.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues and partner organisations to deliver positive outcomes for residents and the wider community.
- Take legal action on cases where breaches of the mobile home agreement
- Assist the Gypsy and Traveller Liaison officer regarding unauthorised encampments and the Swindon Council traveller transit site
You must be fluent in the English language (as a requirement of Part 7 of the Immigration Act “for the effective performance of a customer-facing role”).
