Job Purpose:
To ensure Burnfoot Community Hub is clean, safe, well-maintained and welcoming for all users. The Cleaner/Caretaker is responsible for the daily upkeep of the building, basic maintenance tasks, security, and supporting the smooth running of community activities.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cleaning Duties
- Clean all public areas including reception, hallways, meeting rooms, toilets, kitchen areas and community spaces
- Sweep, mop, vacuum and polish floors
- Empty bins and manage recycling and waste disposal
- Clean internal windows, doors and touchpoints
- Maintain hygiene standards throughout the building, particularly in high-use areas
- Replenish supplies such as soap, toilet paper and cleaning materials
2. Building Maintenance
- Conduct routine inspections of the building to identify required repairs or hazards
- Carry out minor repairs (e.g., replacing bulbs, unblocking sinks, tightening fixtures)
- Report major maintenance issues to management or external contractors
- Maintain outdoor areas (sweeping entrances, clearing litter, de-icing paths in winter)
3. Security and Opening/Closing
- Unlock and lock the building at agreed times
- Ensure alarms are set and the building is secure when not in use
- Monitor access to the building, ensuring doors and windows are secure
- Respond to call-outs when required (if applicable)
4. Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure cleaning chemicals and equipment are used safely and stored correctly
- Keep COSHH records up to date (if applicable)
- Follow risk assessments and safe working practices
- Report hazards, near-misses, and incidents promptly
- Maintain compliance with fire safety routines (checking extinguishers, exits, fire doors, alarms)
5. Support for Community Activities
- Set up rooms for bookings (tables, chairs, equipment)
- Assist with small events or community functions
- Provide general support to volunteers, staff, and visitors when needed
Person Specification
Essential
- Experience in cleaning or caretaking roles
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Basic maintenance/DIY skills
- Reliability and a strong work ethic
- Awareness of health & safety in public buildings
- Good communication skills
- Ability to lift, move furniture and perform manual tasks
Desirable
- Previous experience in community buildings, schools, or similar settings
- Knowledge of COSHH regulations
- First Aid training
- Fire marshal or building safety experience
Working Conditions
- Part-time as required by the organisation
- Lone working will be required
- Out of hours evening weekends will be required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to undertake manual handling tasks
- Ability to work on feet for extended periods
- Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and tools
