Role purpose
To provide reliable, accurate support across the finance and operational functions of the business, taking ownership of core transactional finance alongside sales support administration. The role keeps the day to day running smoothly and provides a strong foundation for someone with the ambition and capability to widen their scope over time.
About Purely
Purely is a B Corp certified business energy broker helping organisations across the UK buy energy better and reach their sustainability goals. We are a growing business that values people who take ownership, communicate clearly, and want to build something they are proud of. This role sits at the heart of how the business runs day to day.
Key responsibilities
- Running and supporting the payroll process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Preparing and supporting the monthly Profit and Loss reporting.
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns and supporting the business's VAT reporting obligations.
- Supporting the year end financial reporting process, including preparing information for the annual accounts and liaising with external accountants.
- Managing billing and resolving billing queries, liaising with suppliers and customers as needed.
- Producing commission reports for the sales function.
- Providing sales support administration to keep the sales team running efficiently.
- Handling ad hoc finance and operational tasks as they arise across the business.
Essential criteria
- A minimum of two years' experience in a finance role, covering transactional finance such as payroll, billing, invoicing or management accounts support.
- Experience in a customer-facing role, for example handling communications over the phone, and confidence resolving queries directly with customers or suppliers.
- Strong Excel skills and confidence working with numerical data.
- High accuracy and strong attention to detail.
- Ability to juggle finance responsibilities alongside administrative and sales support work.
- Clear communicator, comfortable liaising across teams to resolve issues.
- Discretion and reliability when handling confidential payroll and commission data.
Desirable criteria
- Part-qualified (AAT) or working towards a recognised finance qualification.
- Experience of preparing VAT returns and supporting year end financial reporting.
- Experience in a commission-based or brokerage environment.
- Exposure to commission calculation and reporting.
- Familiarity with accounting software, for example Xero, Sage or QuickBooks.
- Ambition to progress toward an operational leadership remit over time.
Attributes for growth
For a candidate with genuine headroom, we are also looking for commercial judgement, an instinct for improving processes rather than simply executing them, initiative, and a willingness to take ownership. These are the qualities that distinguish someone who does the job well from someone who can eventually lead it.
Development path
This role begins as a hands-on finance and operations position. For the right person who performs strongly and demonstrates the attributes above, there will be a structured development discussion at a defined point to explore a potential move toward operational leadership. This is a genuine progression opportunity rather than a guarantee, and it is dependent on both individual performance and business need.
