Seastex is a Scotland-based clean, deep and industrial biotechnology start-up pioneering the world’s first industrial platform for transforming mussel byssus, a discarded aquaculture by-product, into high-performance, circular materials. Our mission is to turn a global blue-economy waste stream into scalable, non-toxic and biodegradable solutions for acoustic materials in the built environment, cosmetic ingredients, and next-generation textile recycling machinery.

We have developed proprietary low-energy purification and fibre-processing systems that enable the industrial use of byssus at scale, a material that was previously inaccessible to modern manufacturing. We operate from Glasgow as our global engineering and IP hub, with planned international expansion in coastal aquaculture regions. By locating production close to mussel farms and processors, we reduce transport impacts, create new revenue streams for farmers, and support long-term economic resilience in coastal communities. Our work directly reduces landfill waste, replaces fossil and mineral-based materials, and contributes to healthier indoor environments through non-toxic, low-emission products.

About the Role:
As a Feedstock Sorter at Seastex, you play a vital role at the very start of our circular production process. You will be responsible for separating mussel byssus fibres from other materials within incoming aquaculture feedstock and carrying out initial cleaning steps. This work directly enables the production of sustainable acoustic materials and cosmetic ingredients.
This is a hands-on, physical role suited to people who enjoy practical work, routine with purpose, and contributing to an environmentally positive mission. No prior experience is required, as full training is provided.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manually separate mussel byssus fibres from non-byssus organic material.
- Clean and process separated byssus fibres following Seastex’s established procedures.
- Handle incoming feedstock carefully to maintain material quality and hygiene standards.
- Carry out lifting, moving, and handling of containers and materials safely and responsibly.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working area in line with health and safety guidelines.
- Follow instructions, workflows, and quality requirements.
- Flag any unusual material, contamination, or issues.
Requirements:
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions and safety procedures carefully.
- Willingness to carry out manual, repetitive, and physically active work while standing formost of the day.
- Comfortable working with aquaculture-derived materials and occasional natural odoursassociated with fresh marine feedstock.
- Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Physically capable of handling routine lifting, pulling, and movement of materials.
- Proactive mindset with the ability to anticipate needs rather than wait for instruction.
- Good written and verbal English communication skills.
- Sense of ownership, accountability, and follow-through.
- A valid UK driving licence, enabling occasional travel.
Candidates must be UK residents with the legal right to work in the UK, holding avalid UK or EU passport, or pre-settled or settled status. Due to the nature of the role and access to IP, a background check will be conducted. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory outcome.
Nice to have:
- Experience in waste sorting, recycling, food processing, aquaculture, agriculture, or similar hands-on environments.
- Interest in sustainability, circular economy, or environmental work.
- Previous experience in roles requiring attention to material quality and cleanliness.
Compensation:
As this 4 month contract is linked to a grant from the Scottish Government, the salary is based on the Real Living Wage of £13.45 per hour, rather than the National Living Wage, which is £12.71 per hour. The role is compensated in line with salaries for comparable positions in the market.
Timing & Employment:
- This roles is intended to start on Thursday the 1st of Oktober 2026.
- This role is intended to end on 31 January 2027, but may be extended to a permanent position.
- You will be required to sign an Employment Contract and a Confidentiality Agreement, and provide a valid passport along with any additional information needed to complete your enrolment.
