General Manager – Roastery Café
Join The Missing Bean Family
We’re Missing Bean, an independent specialty coffee company born in Oxford in 2009. Since opening our first café on Turl Street, we’ve grown into a family of cafés across Oxfordshire, alongside our own Roastery and Bakery.
We’re looking for an experienced General Manager to lead our Roastery Café on Magdalen Road in East Oxford. This is a hands-on role at the heart of Missing Bean and right at the centre of what we do with coffee. You’ll take ownership of the day-to-day running of the café, lead and develop the team, and make sure we’re consistently delivering great coffee, food and customer service.
Your day-to-day:
- Oversee the daily running of the café and maintain high standards of service
- Lead, support and develop a motivated, high-performing team
- Plan and manage the weekly rota, keeping within budget
- Manage ordering, stock levels and wastage
- Be hands-on during service, supporting the team and serving customers
- Maintain consistently high coffee standards and build strong coffee knowledge across the team
- Work closely with our Roastery team to develop your understanding of the coffees we roast and serve
- Make sure the team can confidently talk to customers about our coffee, where it comes from and any processes involved.
- Handle till operations, cashing up and banking
- Lead team meetings and maintain clear communication
- Uphold excellent standards of cleanliness, food hygiene and health and safety
- Work closely with our Roastery, Bakery and wider Missing Bean team
- Take ownership of café performance and look for ways to continually improve
About the role:
Our Roastery Café is a busy neighbourhood café and a pretty unique part of Missing Bean. The coffee served across all of our cafés is roasted right alongside you, with our Bakery just behind the café. It means you and your team have a direct connection to the coffee and food you’re serving every day. Coffee is naturally a big part of this role. You’ll work closely with our Roastery team, get to know the coffees we’re sourcing and roasting, and help make sure that knowledge and enthusiasm carries through to the café team and ultimately to our customers. We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys hospitality and leading people. You’ll be present on the floor, know what’s happening across the café and lead from the front when things get busy. You don’t need to arrive as a specialty coffee expert. What matters is that you’re genuinely interested in coffee and keen to learn. You’ll have the Roastery team right alongside you, as well as plenty of training and support to develop your knowledge, improve your skills and pass that confidence on to your team. Attention to detail matters. From a well-planned rota and engaged team to a clean café, properly dialled-in espresso, great flat white and welcoming customer experience, you’ll take pride in getting the small things right.
What we offer:
- £31,000–£35,000 per year
- 40–45 hours per week
- 28 days holiday per annum
- Bonus scheme based on performance
- Paid breaks
- Free food and coffee on shift
- Employee and company-wide discount
- Specialty coffee and barista training
- The opportunity to work alongside and learn directly from our Roastery team
- Career development opportunities
- Company pension
- Cycle to work scheme
- Referral programme
- Company events
Must haves:
- Experience within hospitality (Management ideally +1 Year)
- Experience leading and motivating an existing, happy team
- A genuine interest in specialty coffee, food and great hospitality
- An eagerness to learn more about coffee and share that knowledge with your team
- Strong organisation and attention to detail
- A positive, can-do attitude. Be on it!
- The ability to stay calm and lead from the front during busy services
