We are seeking applications from serving substantive Superintendents for the role of Operations Superintendent within West Midlands Police.
This is an exciting opportunity to transfer to West Midlands Police to lead a diverse operational portfolio, providing strategic leadership across a number of specialist functions while supporting the force's operational response and national policing responsibilities.
About the Role
Based at Central Operations Hub (Park Lane, Birmingham), with responsibility for teams also located at Tally Ho, the successful candidate will provide leadership and oversight for the following areas:
- Mounted Unit
- Football Unit
- Drones
- Operational Support Unit (OSU)
- Operational Planning

The post holder will ensure these functions are effectively managed, operationally resilient and aligned with force priorities, delivering high-quality operational policing across West Midlands Police.
In addition to portfolio responsibilities, the successful candidate will:
- Undertake command responsibilities as a Tactical Firearms Commander (TFC) and/or Silver Commander, as required.
- Support national thematic responsibilities within the operations portfolio, contributing to the development and delivery of national policing initiatives.
Work collaboratively with internal and external partners to deliver operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Candidate Requirements
Applicants must be substantive Superintendents with the credibility, leadership skills and operational experience to lead complex policing functions and command critical incidents.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Strong strategic and operational leadership.
- Experience of leading high-performing teams across multiple specialist functions.
- Excellent partnership and stakeholder engagement skills.
Sound decision-making and the ability to operate effectively in dynamic and challenging environments.

Selection Process
- Selection for this role will be through an application form and formal interview process. Interviews will be hosted in mid-September.
- Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance prior to commencing their role, this will include a full background & financial disclosure as part of the vetting process.
- Medical: Appointment to this role will be dependent upon successfully medical checks, which may include a drugs test and a fitness test.
