SmartPath is a CRM platform to support Local Authorities to track the impact of their Business Support programmes.
We are entering an important stage in SmartPath’s development and are looking for a Full Stack PHP Developer to take ownership of the platform’s technology.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys building practical, user-centred digital products and wants the opportunity to shape the future of a growing platform.

Job Overview
SmartPath is looking for a Full Stack PHP Developer to take ownership of the platform’s day-to-day development and technical delivery.
The role requires strong experience of specification-driven development, including turning customer and business needs into clear requirements, acceptance criteria and development tasks.
You will use AI throughout the development lifecycle to help specify, build, test and document new functionality, while ensuring that all outputs are reviewed and validated. You will also be responsible for maintaining a clean, secure and maintainable PHP codebase.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and develop SmartPath’s existing PHP platform.
- Translate product and customer needs into clear, testable specifications.
- Use AI tools to support requirements, technical design, coding, testing and documentation.
- Review and validate all AI-generated specifications, code and tests.
- Write clean, secure and maintainable code.
- Design, build, test and release new features.
- Introduce proportionate automated and test-driven development practices.
- Manage bugs, technical debt, integrations and platform improvements.
- Identify opportunities to use AI to improve customer experience and speed to market.
- Communicate technical priorities, risks and progress clearly.
Person Specification
Essential
- Demonstrable experience of specification-driven development.
- Experience using AI tools to specify, deliver and test software-development tasks.
- Strong commercial PHP development experience.
- Approximately 3–8 years of professional software-development experience.
- Experience maintaining and improving a live production platform.
- Good knowledge of object-oriented PHP, Composer, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, APIs and Git.
- Experience writing clean, maintainable and well-documented code.
- Understanding of automated testing and test-driven development.
- Ability to take ownership and work independently.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
Desirable
- Experience with Symfony.
- Experience introducing automated testing into an existing codebase.
- Experience integrating AI or large-language-model services through APIs.
- Experience contributing to product priorities or roadmaps.
- Experience modernising a legacy PHP platform.
Pay: £40,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
