The Role
Halfway Surfacing & Civil Engineering Ltd is looking for experienced Drain Layers and Pipe Layers to join our site teams, working under the direction of a Working Foreman.
Applicants must have proven practical experience installing drainage systems and underground pipework within groundworks, civil engineering and infrastructure projects. This is not a general labouring position.
The role offers the opportunity to work across a varied range of civil engineering schemes, including larger infrastructure projects. Candidates will also be expected to assist with associated groundworks, including excavations, kerbing, ducting and reinstatement works.
Key Responsibilities
- Install foul water, surface water and stormwater drainage systems.
- Lay clay, concrete, plastic and other underground pipework.
- Install manholes, inspection chambers, gullies and associated drainage structures.
- Prepare trenches, bedding and pipe surrounds.
- Work accurately to drawings, specifications, lines, levels and gradients.
- Complete pipe connections, junctions and chamber construction.
- Assist with drainage testing and the identification of defects.
- Carry out general excavations and trenching works.
- Install ducting and underground services.
- Undertake kerbing, concrete works and reinstatements.
- Work safely around excavators, dumpers and other site plant.
- Follow instructions provided by the Working Foreman.
- Follow RAMS, permits, site rules and safe systems of work.
- Maintain high standards of workmanship, safety and housekeeping.
- Support the site team in achieving daily production and programme targets.
Essential Experience
Applicants must have proven experience in:
- Drain laying and underground pipe installation.
- Installing foul and surface water drainage.
- Working with pipe gradients, lines and levels.
- Constructing manholes and inspection chambers.
- Trench preparation, bedding, jointing and backfilling.
- Reading drainage drawings and specifications.
- Working safely within excavations and around site plant.
- General groundworks and civil engineering activities.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must hold:
- A valid CSCS card.
- Proven experience as a Drain Layer or Pipe Layer.
- A good understanding of drainage drawings, gradients and levels.
- A strong understanding of site health and safety.
- The ability to work effectively under the direction of a Working Foreman.
- A reliable, professional and productive approach to work.
- The ability to travel to different sites when required.
Desirable Qualifications
The following would be advantageous:
- Confined Spaces qualification.
- Street Works qualification.
- CPCS or NPORS plant qualifications.
- Dumper or roller ticket.
- Abrasive Wheels qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
Candidate Requirements
The successful candidate will be:
- An experienced and competent Drain Layer or Pipe Layer.
- Capable of completing drainage installations to the required line, level and specification.
- Comfortable undertaking associated groundworks when required.
- Reliable, punctual and hardworking.
- Able to follow drawings and site instructions.
- Committed to high standards of workmanship.
- Safety-conscious and respectful of site procedures.
- Willing to work across varied projects of different sizes.
