Barry Town Council is expanding its team and is looking for a reliable and respectful person to join our Cemetery Team as a Cemetery Maintenance Operative. This is an important role helping to care for Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery and supporting work at Porthkerry Cemetery. You will be working outdoors as part of a small team, helping to maintain the grounds and buildings to a high standard.
The job includes grass cutting, planting, general grounds maintenance, clearing paths, emptying bins, basic repairs, and helping to look after cemetery buildings and vehicles. You will also have contact with members of the public, so a calm, polite, and caring manner is essential. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes sensitive, so empathy and professionalism are very important.
You will work 37 hours per week on a rota that includes weekends all year, later evening closures in summer, and occasional Bank Holiday duties (opening and closing gates only). You must hold a full driving licence and be willing to undertake training, including health and safety, use of machinery, and cemetery-related qualifications. Experience of manual work and working with the public is essential.
In return, Barry Town Council offers a stable role, full training, council uniform and PPE, and the chance to do meaningful work that supports the local community. If you are hardworking, dependable, able to work as part of a team, and take pride in doing a job well, we would welcome your application.
We’re looking for a capable, grounded professional—not just someone who can do the job, but someone who understands the importance of how it’s done.
