Part-Time Packing Assistant
3–4 days per week | £12.71 per hour | 18-24 hours per week
Location: Walking distance from Manchester city centre & Victoria Station
Hours: 10:00am–4:15 pm, 3–4 days per week (18–24 hours)
Break: 15-minute unpaid break at 1pm
Essential working days: Monday & Tuesday
About the role
We’re a small, family-run business looking for two people to join our picking and packing team, helping us prepare and dispatch our online orders.
You'll be given a stack of orders each morning and will be responsible for picking and packing them accurately and efficiently.
The second part of the day involves basic computer work - creating postage labels, scanning completed orders and preparing envelopes and parcels ready for our daily post collection.
Full training will be given on our stock room, products and computer systems, so previous warehouse or packing experience isn't essential.
Our busiest days are at the beginning of the week, so you must be available to work Mondays and Tuesdays. Your additional one or two working days can be negotiated.
What you'll be doing
- Picking, packing and preparing online orders
- Working to daily deadlines set by the manager
- Counting and bagging small craft and jewellery-making components
- Creating postage labels and scanning completed orders
- Preparing parcels and envelopes for collection
- Occassionally helping unload and put away deliveries
- Carrying boxes, sometimes heavy, including up one flight of stairs
- Working at a good pace while maintaining accuracy
- Being part of a small team where conversation and music keep the day moving
Who this job suits
You might be a great fit if you:
- Want a steady part-time job without the pressure of having to "climb the ladder"
- Like the idea of having a job you can simply leave at the door at the end of the day
- Enjoy being part of a small, close-knit and chatty team
- Are comfortable working with small and sometimes fiddly products
- Can stay focused when completing repetitive, hands-on tasks
- Have good attention to detail and take pride in getting things right
- Are reliable and understand that a small team depends on everyone turning up
- Don't mind lifting and carrying boxes as part of the job
Our picking room is currently a team of four. We're a fairly quirky bunch and the atmosphere is informal, friendly and relaxed - although we work hard and have deadlines to meet.
Team fit is really important to us. We're a small business, so we're looking for someone who enjoys getting to know the people they work with and would be happy settling into the team for the longer term.
What we offer
- £12.71 per hour
- 18–24 hours per week
- 3–4 working days, with Mondays and Tuesdays fixed
- Permanent position following a 3-month probation
- No weekend work
- No bank holiday shifts
- No Christmas shifts - we generally close from 23rd December to 2nd January
- Paid holiday (pro rata)
- Casual dress
- Free parking
- Excellent public transport links
- A friendly, independent, family-run workplace
- An alternative-leaning team - our playlists can go anywhere from rock to disco, and there's usually someone talking about a gig they've been to
The honest bit...
This isn't really a job with a career ladder attached to it - and we don't want to pretend that it is.
Our full-time staff have been with us for years and the rest of the business is largely family-run. What we can offer is a steady, reliable part-time job in a welcoming environment where you'll be known, appreciated and genuinely part of the team.
We're particularly interested in hearing from people who are looking for exactly that: a good part-time job, nice people to work with, regular hours and no expectation to take the job home with you.
Applying
Please send us your CV and a short cover letter telling us a little about yourself.
For us, the cover letter is actually more important than having the perfect CV.
Don't feel you need to make it overly formal. Tell us a bit about who you are, what you enjoy, what you're looking for in a job and why you think you'd fit into a small team like ours.
We're not looking for corporate buzzwords - we'd much rather get a sense of the actual person applying.
