Driver/Operative (Grade 4) – Building Services & Maintenance
About the Role
We are recruiting a Driver/Operative (Grade 4) to support Building Services & Maintenance operations through street cleansing and operational duties across the Newport area. This is a practical, hands-on role suited to someone who takes pride in delivering a reliable public service, works well independently and as part of a team, and is committed to maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and professionalism.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out street cleansing duties in line with service requirements and daily work schedules
- Driving council vehicles when required and following all vehicle and driver handbook instructions
- Completing cleansing and maintenance-related operational tasks safely and efficiently to meet required standards
- Supporting daily service delivery by working independently and alongside other operational staff
- Assisting with the supervision and support of cleansing operatives when working as part of a team
- Following health and safety procedures at all times, including wearing required uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Reporting accidents, incidents, vehicle faults, hazards, and safety concerns promptly to supervisors
- Ensuring all work activities are completed in a safe and professional manner
- Attending required training sessions and developing skills relevant to the role
- Maintaining a professional and respectful approach when interacting with colleagues, clients, and members of the public
- Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Supporting other duties appropriate to the role when required
Requirements
Essential:
- Full, current UK Driving Licence
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to carry out physical duties including walking, bending, lifting, and carrying
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to follow instructions, meet deadlines, and manage workload priorities
- Positive attitude with willingness to learn and develop new skills
- Understanding of health and safety responsibilities
- Commitment to providing a high-quality public service
- Completion of required pre-employment checks, including:
- CV submission
- Criminal convictions declaration
Desirable:
- Previous experience working in refuse, street cleansing, environmental services, or a similar operational environment
- Previous supervisory experience
- Knowledge of the Newport City area
- Experience working within a public sector environment
